Texas blues guitarist Bugs Henderson died of cancer Thursday.

I only discovered him a few years ago at Experience PRS, but good god, what a player! He played about half an hour and played two medleys and it could have gone on forever. I told Johnny Hiland the next day that I really wanted to see him and Bugs play together and just go for it - what an even that would have been.

Here's a story Bugs told at one of the Experience events - he'd watched another player pull on his tone knob (it's a coil tap on a lot of PRS guitars), and he told the guy afterwards that he was really impressed with the tone and said he wished he had that. The guy said it was pretty standard and that Bugs might have it already. So Bugs pulled on the tone knob and sure enough, he had the coil tap. He'd had the guitar for 15-20 years and never knew about it. He said when he got back to his hotel room, he wondered if the other guitar he had with him had it. He said he pulled on the tone knob and just about shot it across the room.

RIP, Bugs.

Alan

Bugs was the absolute best.

The last time I saw him, it was the last gig of a road trip, and he played four encores for a about a dozen of us (or fewer) who wouldn't stop yelling for more. He certainly didn't have to do that. Finally, he played a slow song just to calm and quiet us down. And, as always, he was still willing to pause for a chat afterwards. I'm depressed I'll never get a chance to see him again. And for all the people who never discovered him. Thank god we still have his music and those precious audio liner notes to keep his memory alive. Bye Bugs.
