Quote: Sex Pistols sign new record deal ahead of 'Never Mind The Bollocks' re-releaseSex Pistols have signed a new record deal ahead of releasing an expanded and repackaged version of 'Never Mind The Bollocks'. The punk legends have inked a deal with Universal Music Catalogue UK to put out a 35th anniversary edition of their classic 1977 album. Other events and releases, currently under wraps, are being planned throughout the year. Commenting, frontman Johnny Rotten said: Quote: Music can be great, when done by the great. The Sex Pistols are the greatest. Universal now has a trophy room, music is the imitation of nature, the Sex Pistols are nature, so please give generously. Thank you. Karen Simmonds from the label added: "To be given the opportunity to re-evaluate the Sex Pistols catalogue is every music lover’s dream. We’re looking forward to working with the band and celebrating their impact on worldwide culture." http://www.nme.com/news/sex-pistols/62276

Can't imagine there's any material left in the vaults that has been released on numerous previous reissues and compilations, including the box set.

Most of it was released in desperate cash grabs like "Flogging a Dead Horse", way back in 78 or 79. The box set is pretty all-inclusive, and I'm happy with it. The only way I'll pick this up (it would, I believe, be my SEVENTH purchase of Bollocks) is if the remastering sound quality is simply impossible to pass up. Given the equipment they were using at the time they recorded it, I can't see that happening.

Sad part about this is I doubt this will be done well. I don't think the masters of the LP have ever been used for a CD era release. Only the first pressing of the UK vinyl sounds really good. The band has possession of all of the multis and out take mixes(oddly enough stored in Los Angeles) and these have never been touched.

I missed out on the box set...and it's OOP going for $75 used, so I'll probably be in for this.

The album was a game-changer, so I've never had any interest in hearing any demos, alternate tracks, or the like. I thought the sound was perfect. This is one of those albums that defined a particular time and place for me, and I don't want to mess with that. Also, I don't want to give any more of my money to them greedy bastards.

I think the Dave Goodman demos (aka "Spunk") are better than the actual album. Recorded live in the studio rather than through piles of overdubs... and they actually feature a real bassist!

Sid played on one or two songs, because he was such a fuckup, and Steve filled in the rest.

The songs are much better with Glenn's playing. IIRC Sid doesn't play anything on the album. There's rumors of outtakes with his playing, but nothing has ever surfaced yet.

Steve Jones said that Sid played on (maybe) God Save the Queen, and that was about it.

I think it's actually "Bodies" that Sid is supposed to have played on, according to Jones. Jones says Sid played on the original track and then he (Jones) went back and overdubbed a new bass part. It's unclear whether Sid's playing was erased or just buried in the mix, but I don't think it's audible either way.

I did a thesis on the Sex Pistols (for real!), and I used to know pretty much everything there was to know about them...but it was over 20 years ago. The important thing is that Sid couldn't play, and contributed nothing but his self-destructive personality to the Punk scene. No small thing, that, of course...but it wasn't much of a talent.

Doesn't Matlock say (in his book) that he was called back to play bass on a few tracks, too?

I haven't read his book (it came out in the late 90s IIRC), but I doubt that would have happened at the time, given their extremely strained relationship. As in, the others really, really, hated him. Even if he says in his book that he did, I'd have to hear it confirmed by Steve Jones or Paul to believe it myself.

I went to a concert years ago ( Ben Harper ) and they played Never Mind The Bollocks in full before the show, the crowd and myself were so into that music that Ben Harper was not the highlight of the night, I still have vivid memories of that, one great track after another. Rock as it should be.

pobbard wrote: Doesn't Matlock say (in his book) that he was called back to play bass on a few tracks, too? Lydon says (in his book) that Matlock was hired as a session man to play bass on the album. He mocks Matlock for being willing to swallow his pride and do that after leaving/being drummed out of the band. However, Matlock clarifies (in his own book) that although McLaren asked him to play bass on the album (and even paid him up front for doing it) he decided not to show up for the sessions and didn't play anything. The reason Lydon was unaware of this is that Jones and Cook recorded the instrumental tracks first and then Lydon came in and overdubbed his vocals onto them, so Lydon was not aware of who was playing bass. The only Matlock bass on the album is on Anarchy, which of course was recorded a couple months before the rest of the album sessions, when Matlock was still in the band.

Damn it, looks like they're going to get me to buy this for that seventh time. Some nice live stuff there that I don't have. I'm going to assume they're pretty good soundboards and not some crap audio.
