My response--it depends.Sometimes it does;the new effects set us actually see what was just implied before in the original series. The episode where the Enterprise travels in time by whipping around the sun benefits by actually seeing(thanks to the new FX) the Enterprise going around the sun. Other times,it seems trivial;just making phaser blasts brighter isn't worth buying a multi-disc DVD set for.Remastering the TNG series is even more pointless. Those effects haven't aged nearly as badly as the original '60s Trek FX .
Special effects aren't everything. The 2005 King Kong may use more sophisicated FX techniques than the 1933 original, but when it comes down to which is the better movie, Kong '33 kicks the '05 Kong's computer generated ass right off the screen.

If I was going to own the series I would like to own both.

That is how I had it when I owned Star Wars on DVD. Then I got burglarized. Grumble, grumble. Excuse me, I think I need to take a quick visit to the ANGRY DOME!!!

Strange that you would find a black and white picture since there is only one black and white Get Smart episode.

I wonder if that is the episode from which that black-and-white picture was taken.

I love the remastered episodes and look forward to seeing some TNG ones.

I'm in favor of tasteful enhancements that match the aesthetic and intent of the creators but against anything that goes into Lucas territory.

Stuff like making the Gorn blink or enhancing phaser blasts is fine; I'm not terribly bothered by it, but replacing all the USS Enterprise model scenes with new CG seems unnecessary to me.

Still, nothing I've seen in the TOS sets has come close to unnecessary bullshit like replacing Sebastian Shaw with Hayden Christensen or making Han shoot first (and even those don't truly bother me but it seems odd and unwarranted).

I don't own Star Trek. One day I may, but I have never felt the urge since I quit my DVD buying habit.

Though, if I were to buy, now that I have a choice I would get the enhanced. If I already had one though, I doubt I would upgrade.

I always figured that if someday I ever had the time for it, I'd buy the most recent, pimped-out version of the original Star Trek series on DVD or Blu-ray or whatever...but it is me, or have they managed to find a way to repackage these episodes every 2-3 years or so?

I agree with most of this. I've been watching them on Amazon Prime and have really been enjoying them. I really haven't noticed anything intrusive, akin to Lucas.

He made Han shoot second.

Fake fan.

They've been doing this for some time with random Doctor Who release, so this:

becomes this:

They're pretty good with the Doctor Who effects. It's mostly about taking something no one was happy with at the time and replacing it with something that looks like something of the time.

There are a lot of awful Who effects. If anything needs a retooling it is Who.

But it's a fine line. Improve the effects too much and then they start looking better than the production. A lot of what they do is improve the infamously bad effect shots, such as an exploding castle which was just some stock footage of a quarry explosion (very obviously not a castle being blown up). If memory serves, they replaced it with a CGI shot that looks like a dodgy model getting blown up. Another serial had some tin-foil monsters getting the CGI treatment... seriously, they bits of tin-foil strips being blown by a fan. It was a horrible effect even by late 70s standards.

I have heard of the tin foil monster and its legendary awfulness. That is the crap I am talking about. Really over the top awful stuff.

As long as they don't go altering the bubble-wrap monster -- that one's a classic!
