'X-Men: First Class' producer says sequel will focus on Magneto

Simon Kingberg, the producer of X Men: First Class, has said that the film's sequel will focus on the character of Magneto. Magneto was played by Shame actor Michael Fassbender in the 2011 film and he has confirmed he will return to the play the role again in a sequel.

Speaking about the plans for a sequel to X Men: First Class, Kingberg told MTV News that he would be producing and writing the film and that it would be an in depth portrayal of Magneto's journey to becoming the franchise's villain.

He said of this: "That’s what was so cool about the first one and what we want to continue. Magneto becomes the villain ultimately of the franchise but he’s a much more complicated character as a young man. He’s someone you sympathize with, you care about you root for even though might not necessarily agree with his methods, you understand his philosophy."

Kinberg also said the story was still in development and he was unsure how much of Magneto's narrative journey would be shown.

He said of this: "We’re still figuring that out. I think the truth is ultimately that because Michael is such an interesting actor, he’ll never be full-on anything. He’ll have a villainous side and he’ll have a sympathetic human side you’ll be able to relate but you’ll also be afraid of him. He becomes Magneto."

I was really hoping for more Banshee. He deserves more screen time and I'm surprised to say that because I've never really been a fan of him in the comics.

As much as I liked First Class, I thought the side characters (pretty much everyone aside from Xavier, Magneto, and Shaw) were kind of disposable.

Agreed.

The premise and "world" of X-Men is not special or even particularly good. People are wrong to like it. They are wrong about what they like. And should DIAF.

The reason it is good is because of Xavier and Magneto. Those two characters, and the interaction between them (in that setting, the "world" of X-Men is important in that sense) are really ones that stack up with some of the great characters of the ages. Surely one of the great fictional duos of the 20th Century. And for the first time (in my book), popular science fiction really nailed the concept of a "mutant" character, how he might be different yet reveal something about human nature.

Agree but the main two were so outstanding, I loved it. This sounds promising.

I don' t know. Havok and some of the others were sort of generic (partially simply because they weren't the main characters), but Mystique was complex and interesting. So was Beast (although to a lesser degree). I thought their relationship was an interesting "subset" of the magneto/charles relationship--the same issues played out in a different way.

Agree. Thought Mystique did a great job. Beast was good until the transformation.

This movie was one of my faves but it would have been even cooler with the original team.

True. I wonder if First Class 2 will do the whole "stealth reboot" deal, and stray from original film trilogy more by having Charles recruit Cyclops, Angel, etc. I think I'd be cool with that, depending on how they worked it.

Since Spiderman is a reboot, Batman has done it already with Nolan, why the heck not. Audiences will accept it.

They need to just keep rolling, do what they want to do (such as introduce Angel and Cyclops) and not worry about how it supposedly "matches up" with the first trilogy. Just keep steering in whatever direction you want to go.

Nobody cares except for obsessive fanboys who will be there on opening night anyway.

Agree. The team is broken anyway, we learned that mutants might age slower anyway, so start with Beast and introduce the rest

I think that at the end of this trilogy ALL of the First Class X-Men except for Hank should be either dead, missing, or on Magneto's side. The third movie should end with a bald Xavier and hairless Hank trying again and welcoming new students - Scott, Jean, Warren and Bobby.

It is nice the way First Class and X-Men 1 fit together very nicely, with only a couple slight glitches.

But yeah, as long as it's awesome, it's cool with me if they make this a fresh start, like the ones Allen mentioned, the new Spider-Man and the Nolan Batman, etc.

I would love that but think they are too afraid to do it.

WILL "X-MEN: FIRST CLASS 2" EXPLORE "DAYS OF FUTURE PAST?"

After announcing its 2013-2014 release slate including a July 18, 2014 release for the untitled "X-Men: First Class" sequel, 20th Century Fox has apparently registered an X-Men related film title with the MPAA Title Registration Bureau. As discovered by Ain't it Cool News, the studio has registered "Days of Future Past," a possible indication that Vaughn's next film will deal with time travel and alternate futures.

The original "Days of Future Past," written by Chris Claremont with art by John Byrne, alternated between the present-day X-Men fighting to stop the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants' assassination attempt on Senator Robert Kelly and a dystopian future where Sentinels rule the United States, mutants live in internment camps and most of the super-powered beings of the Earth have been killed. Rachel Summers sends the psyche of the future Kitty Pryde into the body of her younger self to warn the X-Men about the future and stop the assassination.

While it is currently unknown whether the "Days of Future Past" registration relates directly to Matthew Vaughn's untitled "First Class" sequel, it would be an excellent way to explore possible directions for the franchise's future and allow for an in-continuity reboot of the X-Men films. Either way, a big screen adaptation for one of the most popular X-Men stories of all time could be in the cards -- it's just a question of when and where more details will surface.
