I think Kingdom Come is a nice modern update on the classic. I'm going with that for now.

I chose the last option. I think you can lose the red trunks but you need both red and yellow in the belt area. leave everything else the same as the Reeve version.

The Kingdom Come S still looks like a "no Superman" symbol to me. (The horizontal red line as you'd see on a "no entrance" or similar signs.)

I voted classic. I don't see the problem with the red undies.

Still too tough to pull off in live action I think.

I don't know, I think Reeve looks good and while Superman Returns' costume had some issues with color, the trunks didn't look bad.

True. It's not like they're a helmet or anything...

You did imply it was Whitney's yellow "S" on the back of her cape.

The trunks on the outside is shorthand for superhero. One of the iconic costume choices made by Siegel and Shuster that shaped how superheroes would appear. It stood out because it made the character look different from almost every normal occupational outfit.

Now we want to move Superman away from the imagery that identified him as Superman. Make the obvious "S" into something that might be construed as an "S", lose the trunks so that his outfit looks more like a traditional jumpsuit, take the "S" off of his back, lose the spit curl... It's as if folks want to see how much you can visually remove from the character and still have people identify him as Superman. "I see a blue suit and a red cape, so I'm assuming it's Superman?"

I have tons of problems with the Donner and Singer Supermen, but none of them have to do with the costumes. The suit works.

But the helmet looks cool and has a use. The trunks look dated and serve no real purpose.

Agreed.

I could live with an adjustment to the chest logo. I suspect that DC is going to be cautious about changing the world's most famous trademark anyway. It is the darker colors and addition of the Fleischer black in the shield that works for me more than anything else.

And the yellow "S" on the cape?

Make the belt area yellow and this would be about perfect.

Sorry about the kind of crappy image resolution, but I think it gets the point across.

My favorite combination would be the Christopher Reeve suit, but with the colors darkened and muted, about as much as the Brandon Routh suit. And they can experiment with textures on the fabric, etc. But the cut and design of the Reeve suit is classic and awesome.
