Sony Music re-launches the first six albums of the Rory Gallagher catalogue, Rory Gallagher, Deuce, Live! In Europe, Blueprint, Tattoo and Irish Tour in 2012 As Daniel Gallagher, Rory’s Nephew and producer of the re-issues states: "What better way to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Rory Gallagher's solo career than with the release of his first six solo albums, re-mastered from the original 1/4 inch master tapes?”
The titles have all been re-mastered, use enhanced versions of the original release artwork with sleeve notes from, amongst others, Donal Gallagher, Rory’s brother and former tour manager.

This is to let everyone know what is available. The first 6 albums have been newly remastered from the original tapes by Andy Pearce and Matt Wortham who are among the best in the biz if you ask me.
These are all digiapks and look and sound beautiful. These make up for the remixes from the late 90s which were reissued last year thus causing the confusion (and rather lamely I might add).
I listened to Live In Europe coming home from work tonight and it sounds so nice. No compression (well, maybe a tad, but really very little), and a very smooth, fully realized midrange. At least to my ears. Blows away the remixes and restores a lot of things. First class.

Thanks very, very much ot our pal slipkid for letting us know that:
a.)These are indeed the real deal and the new ones
b.) How to get them cheap from Grooves Inc I was able to get 4 of them using the starnge coupon system, they have and the first 2 came in today. They are great and the S&H was handled wonderfully-thanks so much!)

So, in closing, if you want the actual new, fully authorized remasters from the master tapes, it is the Sony UK 2012 releases in digipaks you want. And at the prices they are at, you must have these!
The next batch should be out soon.

Got 2 of my 4 today (still don't know how Grooves did 'em so cheap). One interesting thing, Tattoo has 1 of the 2 bonus tracks; Live In Europe has both. Wish Tattoo had both, I really don't want to keep 2 versions (at this instant I have 4 editions of Tattoo). Off to compare sound quality soon, hoping for good news.

Just did a quicky comparison of 3 tracks from the 4 versions of Tattoo on my main system

My white Avatar helped out. Her clear favorite was the 1989 Castle (cats hate bright mastering even more than I do).

I'd rate the 4 editions as follows:

1. Tie between 1989 Castle & 2012 UK Sony, although they are very different sounding. The sad thing is, as bad as a/d convertors were in 1989, the 2012 should blow it away, but that's not the case. While somewhat less bright then the 2011 Eagle, & considerably less bright than the dreadful 2000 Buddah, they're still unfortunately going for a "modern" sound. The 3 tracks I used for the comparison were Cradle Rock, 2020 Vision & Who's That Coming.

On 2020, the 1989 was the clear winner. The 1989's weakness is lack of detail due to the primitive a/d convertors, but very nice tone. As 2020 is just acoustic guitar & vocals, there was enough resolution available in the primitive a/d's to get it right. The other 2 tracks are more of a toss up. The Sony is too bright, but has lots of detail. The Castle is more pleasant to listen to, but leans a bit muddy & 2 dimensional sounding with little depth.

3. The 2011 Eagle
4. The DREADFUL painfully compressed & bright 2000 Buddah

I was hoping to keep just 1. The question is now whether I'm going to keep 2 (2012 & 2011 for the extra track), or 3 (add the 1989). Part of my decision on the 1989 is going to include how the 2012 Blueprint sounds when it gets here, as the 1989 is a 2 cd set with both titles.

Both of my Buddha editions are now officially for sale.

Also did a very quick comparison of the 2 versions I have of Live in Europe: 1999 Buddah & 2012 Sony. Just checked one song, the great version of Messin' With The Kid.

Both cd's sounded better than the equivalent version of Tattoo.

The 2012 is much better than the 1999. The 2012 is 43 seconds shorter. No idea why.

I've now played Tattoo on 3 players. Turns out my main cd rig was the most forgiving of the 3. Tattoo, while better than the 2000 is still horribly bright. On my Oppo the guitar solo on Tattoo'd Lady is PAINFUL to listen to. One other comment; despite the press Donal is still listed as "executive producer" with a "thank you" to Daniel for an unspecified role.

While in my brief audion of Live In Europe it did seem to be better sounding than Tatoo, my opinion is we still do not have good sounding Gallaghers. Ironically I clearly remember the vinyl edition of Tattoo when i was a teen as being too muddy sounding.

I hope the others are better, but I am extremely disappointed with the sound of Tattoo (my fav of his catalog).

Someone posted on the SH forum about Tattoo sounding too bright but others sounding better. My ears don't notice anything to complain about (but YMMV, my ears are not the best, esp. when it comes to highs). I haven't had any time to compare any of the various versions that I have, although that is something I would like to do eventually. I got the 2 live ones in a few days ago so I now have all of this set of releases, looking fwd to them releasing the batch of albums from his Chrysalis record days (Against the Grain through Jinx), especially at these low prices.

I've only heard Live In Europe and Blueprint so far and I have no complaints at all. But, when did Tattoo ever sound all that great sonically? I guess I'll find out soon how it sounds now.
One musical note-I forgot how subdued much of Live In Europe is. There's some great stuff, but Rory doesn't do a whole lot of jaw-dropping soloing. "Bullfrog Blues" however and "Messin' With The Kid" are incredible. As for the remaster-I've never heard it sound better, but again, this is not a great-sounding album to begin with. It's one of those "hockey barn" recordings with lots of hiss and high end annoyances and distortion.
Irish Tour '74 is one of the greatest live albums ever IMO and that blows Live In Europe away both in performance and sonics.

Blueprint & Irish Tour arrived yesterday. Hope to find time soon for serious listening. Really pisses me off that they messed up Tattoo AGAIN. It is very possible that it was badly recorded, but as I previously mentioned both the original USA LP & the 1st cd issue were 180 degrees different sound quality wise from all 3 of the cd remasters; they were somewhat muddy.

I'd also like to know why the article that I think Slip posted or linked to with the interview with Daniel indicates Daniel is responsible for these, but the liner notes primarily credit Donal; who I suspect is the problem.

Tattoo did sound best on vinyl as I recall, but I haven't heard this one just yet. Again thanks to slipkid-what a deal this was! I still need to order Rory Gallagher and Deuce.
P.S.
slipkid:
I saw Rory open for Rush in 1982 at the Spectrum in Philly-that's where I saw him!

Cool, I was at those shows too. I think Rush used to play multiple Philly shows, usually 2 or 3 night stands, and I went to every local Rush show back then, even though every night was basically the same. It was nice to see Rory getting more exposure, at a larger venue, but I thought pairing him with Rush was kind of weird since their music is so different. Rory's live shows were so much more captivating/energizing in small venues/clubs so I'm glad I was able to have seen him in a couple of those too.

Just did a comparison on the other 2. Important point no one else has mentioned: the 2012 Irish Tour has a different track 10 than either the 2011 Eagle (per Amazon) & the Buddha: it replaces Maritime from the other 2 with Just a Little Bit & runs about 8 minutes longer. I no longer own the vinyl, so I have no clue what was track 10 on the original.

I also can't find the Eagle 2011 of irish Tour; I had it here at one time but I can't find it today so i was only able to compare the 2012 Sony & the 1999 Buddha.

I would have to agree with what Slip read, Tattoo is by far the worst of the 4; though all are a bit bright for me.

Blueprint 2012 was interesting in that the volume varied drastically from track to track. Irish Tour 1999 is LOUD.

Here's how I rank all versions that are currently available to me of the 4 2012 titles I bought:

Live In Europe:
1. Sony UK 2012
2. Buddha 1999

Blueprint
1. Sony UK 2012
2. Castle 1989
3. Buddha 1999

Tattoo
1. Tie: 1989 Castle & 2012 UK Sony
3. 2011 Eagle
4. 2000 Buddha

Irish Tour
1. 2012 Sony UK
2. 1999 Buddha

Based on memory I would rank the 2011 Eagle #2 & the Buddha #3.

Actually as Maritime was 35 seconds long, they added a track for the 2012 Irish Tour!

Isn't last year's Eagle just a reissue of the Buddha?

No, it was another remaster. I've heard 2 of them.

My confusion continues. Who did the Eagle remasters? Why would they do those months before these new ones?

I wasn't aware that any of the remasters were limited (except this box). Which version are you asking about? If it's the European Sony's, I got mine from https://www.grooves-inc.com/index.php?o ... 29bfaa24d8

I'm surprised; they do seem to have gone oop. Glad I got all my favorites when they had them.
