I was playing Heart's Dog & Butterfly album today and noticed that "Cook With Fire" sounded awfully slick for something that was supposed to be live. I checked the booklet and, sure enough, it was recorded in the same Seattle studio that the rest of the album was done in, not live in Memphis. It made me wonder how many other supposedly live tracks are out there that are really studio creations? I don't mean live tracks with studio overdubbing but tracks that were done entirely in the studio and then doctored to sound live. A few that come to mind...

Cook With Fire -- Heart
Get Ready -- Rare Earth
Bennie and the Jets -- Elton John

But I'll bet there are more.

"Bridge Over Troubled Water" on Elvis' original "That's The Way It Is" album was a studio recording with overdubbed applause; subsequent TTWII reissues have included authentic live Presley performances of BOTW and the restored studio master.

Alice Cooper used fake live tracks one a couple of occasions during the early 1980's; the "Generation Landslide" remake on "Special Forces", for example. (I'd have to look up the others--I read this someplace on the http://www.sickthings.co.uk fansite)

During Rush's "The Spirit Of Radio," after Geddy sings "concert halls," there's crowd noise to simulate a live concert. I don't think they were trying to pretend it was recorded live, but I'm sure there are some people who hear that and think it's a live recording.

All partial....studio songs listed

The Rolling Stones - Got Live If You Want It - I've Been Loving You Too Long, Fortune Teller
The Blues Project - Live At Town Hall - No Time Like The Right Time, Where There's Smoke, There's Fire
Steppenwolf Live - Hey Lawdy Mama

Edit

I misunderstood the question....I was thinking supposedly live albums containing studio recordings with fake crowd overdub.

No, I think you got it right--the Stones stuff you mentioned definitely qualifies.

There's a similar bit in the middle of 10cc's "From Rochdale to Ocho Rios" but that's another case where I don't think they were trying to fool anyone.

In that case, the other 2 albums I mentioned have the same issue.

The Byrds - So You Want To Be A Rock & Roll Star has screaming girls....but obviously a studio recording.

"Get In The Ring" on Guns 'n' Roses "Use Your Illusion II" used crowd noise, apparently from an actual GnR concert, but I would think it was done more as a sound effect rather than an attempt to simulate a live recording--an attempt to fool any listeners, in other words. The title track from "Sgt. Pepper" also certainly qualifies.

Also "The Punk And The Godfather" from "Quadrophenia"

Since Crusing with Ruben and the Jets, Zappa has always mixed studio/live recordings. Most of the studio albums are constructed around tunes or solos recorded live. Most of the live albums have scores of studio overdubs. Some of the later live albums (88 tour) might be 99% live but they are edited from nearly every concert on the tour - by picking out the best notes to each section of every tune - it might just have well been studio..

I think (maybe) the Can't Do that on Stage Anymore series is 100 % live and most of the releases over the last 10 years. The snyclavier material is all studio I believe. One can never be sure.

Bette Midler's Live At Last includes one studio cut - You're Moving Out Today.

James Brown had many of these. After the success of Live at the Apollo, Sid Nathan tried to duplicate the success by over-dubbing (often poorly) live crowd reaction onto studio tracks. Didn't work as everyone could see through it. Brown also chose on his own to do this for a few singles, as well. His whole Sex Machine album (not the famous single), I believe, is "fake live."

Another album that popped into my head: IIRC, some of the "live" cuts from the original "Woodstock" album were not recorded at Woodstock at all (although they may have been recorded live someplace else.)

The entire Orgasm album by John's Children was fake live. (They supposedly used audience screaming from A Hard Day's Night.)

Steppenwolf Live - Hey Lawdy Mama

That one surprises me. While I love this version (& the whole album for that matter), the guitars are out of tune!

Mountain Scenes From An Imaginary Western & CSNY Sea Of Madness were the 2 I am aware of. I actually kept an earlier version of WS after buying the latest box because I greatly prefer those versions! Apparently Neil Young does also; he used the version from the original Woodstock ALBUM on Archives rather than the real Woodstock version.

When I first bought the Sacred Heart album, I thought it was a little weird that it started off with a live track....

I never would have guessed at first either until reading Amazon reviews of the album and seeing Wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steppenwolf_Live

Ashlee Simpson and Milli Vanilli; oh wait, the audience was live but the singers were fake...

How about Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band?

The Fifth Dimension - Never My Love (from the Live!! double album) was a studio creation with overdubbed clapping...
