I went to see The Tale of Despereaux this weekend for my son's birthday. The family read the book aloud together a couple of years back, so this was one we were looking for.

It opened to a tepid 10.5 million, which is a shame. This one is at the very highest level in cinematic quality, right up there under the Pixar tier.

The story is one that will endear itself to adult consumers of adventure stories, particularly comic book superheroes. Despereaux is a heroic little mouse who learns of courage, honor, and loyalty by sneaking into the library and reading chivalric tales. His heroism is called upon to save a princess, and the rat Roscuro searches for redemption in the process. There are several other subplots heavily grounded in the theme of forgiveness.

Matthew Broderick as Despereaux. Dustin Hoffman as Roscuro. Are you people made of stone!?!

If you're someone that enjoys the Pixar movies, don't let this one slip under your radar.

That's kinda selfish, Jay. At the very least, you should have taken the poor kid to the movie with you. What a lame present.

"Son, for your Christmas present, I'm gonna go to a strip club ..."

I wish more movies like this got made -- it wasn't a toy, wasn't a "next big thing," and the story was very non-traditional. It was based on an award-winning kid's book. The kids really liked and watched it for many repeated viewings. It is a surprisingly complex plot with many turns.

It's about the nature of story itself, the civilizing effect of stories and dreaming.

The Secret World of Arietty, an animated feature opening today, just might fit these criteria. (Based on the book "The Borrowers.")

Not sleep-dreaming. Dreaming as in aspiring.
