Sad to hear that John Severin has reportedly died at age 90: http://www.newsarama.com/comics/artist- ... 20214.html. Ironically I've been on a major Cracked (magazine) binge for the past week so I've been reading a pile of his stuff. Nothing against the Mad guys (Drucker, Torres, and Davis) but as a kid I always preferred Severin's movie and TV parodies, and I still do now. I liked his more realistic style, and his use of gray tones and linework was amazing. Too bad that stuff has never been reprinted and likely never will be. It's pretty amazing that over the past decade two of the original four Mad artists were still around and still doing great work. Now Davis is the only one left.

What's really sad is this. Cracked isn't a magazine anymore---it's a humour web page, and on that web page
there is no mention of John Severin.

I wonder if the current owners know who John Severin was.

When he inked Trimpe on Hulk, it was the best the Hulk ever looked. Very sad news.

I suppose it would be hard to write an obituary in the form of a top five bulleted list...

I wonder why the current owners of Cracked Mazagine's name/characters/intellectual property even bothered to spend money buying it, since aside from the name and logo they are not using any of it, and don't have any intention to do so in the future. They could have come up with their own name and had just as much success.

If I were to use Alfred E. Newman without permission, Time Warner would sue my @$$. Sylvester Smythe? I don't think the owners of Cracked would even notice...

I don't have time to do it now, but when I get home I'll register and let Cracked know a little bit about their own history here:

I miss Cracked--while MAD and National Lampoon have been reprinted to death, Cracked seems to have been unfairly relegated to Ebay auctions. I'm sorry I didn't manage to hang on to more copies. When I was younger (late 70's), I sort of gave up on Cracked because MAD was so ubiquitous with the Super Specials and paperbacks and whatnot; I got back in to Cracked when Don Martin joined the staff, but I probably haven't held an actual issue in my hands in twenty years.

RIP Mr. Severin.

I was thinking that Severin would've been a complimentary inker for Curt Swan, but after thinking on it more I think that Severin would've overpowered Swan like he did a lot of pencillers. (Which I never did mind, since Severin was such an amazing illustrator.)

The sad thing is that the entire Cracked archives (film of the entire 40+ year history of the magazine) had to be destroyed because it was housed at one of the places where anthrax was mailed in 2001. So any reprints would have to be done via scans of old magazines. Mark Arnold, author of When You're Cracked, You're Happy (a history of the magazine) says he has inquired about licensing some old material for reprinting but the current owners have declined, and they have no interest in reprinting it themselves, either.

Speaking of the Talking Blob, did Severin draw or ink the Hulk issue where a U.S. Congressman was turned into a Blob?

IIRC the Talking Boob was drawn by Corben, not Severin.

With all due respect to the other Masters involved
John Severin was THE BEST Sgt. Fury and His Howling Commandos artist.
He made them seem like real guys sitting in the room with you as you read about them.
RI well-earned P.
