Tried to keep it to straight sketch shows, seperate from variety shows, but there's bound to be some overlap.
For me,SCTV.No other show has gone the route it went, from syndication to network to cable, and never getting enough acclaim.

Kids In The Hall for me just beats SCTV which in turn just beats Monty Python.

Python, SNL, Kids in the Hall, in that order.

The correct answer is Mr. Show.

Bannings: One too few . . .
SCTV was indeed great. They took full advantage of the format -- they took advantage of the time that they had to perfect good skits (SNL doesn't have this luxury), the took advantage of an overarching narrative to unite the skits (a television station) so it could have some running gags and subplots. And they assembled some all time greats from Second City, so the talent was "proven."

SNL, I love the format. It's exciting. They basically throw a show together within a few short days. And somehow it works.

I loved Kids in the Hall back in the day.

Making me pick between Monty Python and SCTV is just cruel.

For my English class last semester I wrote a paper comparing and contrasting SNL and Monty Python's Flying Circus. It was a good paper.

SCTV, Monty Python and Mr. Show are all excellent. I like how all three find imaginative ways to connect the sketches.

I don't feel right chiming in having not seen many of the shows mentioned above.

Fry & Laurie is pretty fantastic.

The more recent "Portlandia" has a lot of potential, way too early to start calling it "best" of anything, but give it a few more seasons and it might turn into something pretty great. The Battlestar Galactica episode was awesome.

Ones above I have actually seen:

Laugh In
Monty Python
Mad TV
Chappelle's Show
SNL

I would have trouble ranking even those 5, Mad TV would obviously be way the hell at the bottom, but SNL, Chappelle, Laugh-In, and Monty Python appeal to me in different ways. On the whole between those 4 I would say I like Chappelle the most. Laugh-In did not thrill me, Python is kind of hit and miss, and SNL has had so many bad years as to hold it back. However, since many of those listed at the top of the thread are shows I would like to see, but have not yet seen for various reasons I don't feel totally right giving Chappelle the title.
