Well, I caved.Reading many good things about the Who reissues coming out of Japan and these two comps are probably my fave amongst with "Odds & Sods". The Who / Who's Missing & Two's Missing +11 [Cardboard Sleeve (mini LP)] [SHM-CD] [Limited Release] has new remastering The originals came out quite awhile back and go for big bucks on EBay. Postcard (Cancelled EP version) (Bonus Track) 17. Baby Don't You Do It (Live in San Francisco 1971) (Bonus Truck) Disc 2 1. Bald-Headed Woman (Mono) 2. Under My Thumb (Mono) 3. So...wait a second:
There were two different versions of "Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde"?
There were two different versions of "I Don't Even KNow Myself?"
(I know about the two versions of "Eyesight To The Blind")
Are these available nowhere else? In other words, I'm still happy with my ancient MCA copies of these two albums, and I'm not sure how rare the other 11 tracks are.

I've got the two MCA CDs as well as the Rarities Vols. I & II comp, but I'm in for these reissues, as well.

The common version of "I Don't Even Know Myself" dates from the 1971 Who's Next sessions. That's the version that was a originally a b-side, and also appears on the Rarities CD and the 1995 Who's Next reissue. The other version is from 1970, recorded at the same sessions that produced Water, Naked Eye, Now I'm a Farmer, and Postcard. As far as I know, that version has only been released as a Japan-only bonus track on the 1994 Now and Then compilation. FWIW I prefer the rarer 1970 version. There is only one version of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde but two different mixes. The US mix is on the old Magic Bus CD, and the UK version is on the Rarities CD.

I oirdered one too. I'm usually pretty good at resisting "new" Who repackages, but somehow I missed hearing about the Japanese "Then And Now" back when it was released, so...there you go. This is actually the first time I've given in and picked up one of these Japanese Who sets.
That said, it was my understanding that old MCA Who CD's such as these should be treasured because they were mastered by Steve Hoffman.

Link? Not sure I want to cave on it, but if the old MCAs are going for enough on ebay, maybe I will sell the old ones to get these.

I just grabbed it from an Ebay seller that offered $3 shipping from Tokyo. It should show up in about a month.

Alan Who's Missing is still in print in Canada and available cheaply. Two's Missing is the one that's out of print and sells for big bucks (or at least amazon sellers are asking big bucks for it... I don't know if they actually get them).

It's interesting how, while working with the same album concept, the US and the UK came up with such radically different albums. Album art: UK--About as generic as album artwork gets. Two seperate albums with identical covers and even less on the back other than basic song info. US--Completely new artwork for both albums. Townshend wrote an essay for "Who's Missing", Entwistle wrote liner notes for "Two's". I have to wonder why Japan isn't creating seperate mini-sleeves for both releases. Tracklisting: UK--Arranged more or less chronologically, the first volume covering 1966-68, the second ostensibly covering 1970-72, although "Water" was released in 1973. Tracks on the individual albums are somehwhat chronologically arranged as well. US--Tracklisting for both albums decidedly non-chronological Track selection: UK--All tracks, although rare, had been previously released. Prior to the release of Who remasters in 1994, this set very neatly filled in several major holes in the Who discography, including "Ready, Steady, Who", the "Under My Thumb/Last Time" single, and (I believe) all other post-Talmy B-sides by the band. I was commenting in another thread recently how the Who's catalog has changed so much in the past decade-and-a-half or so; their cover of "Batman" was an import-only track for nearly thirty years before showing up on the 1995 "A Quick One" reissue. US--Not as commprehensive, but did include previously unavailable material, such as the live "Bargain", as well as Talmy-era tracks ("Bald Headed Woman" and "Leaving Here") Despite some song overlap, I think that both collections are essential. I would also point out, that unlike many such comps, both are quite listenable. These tracks may have been leftovers, but they're great leftovers.

Alan Sell them on the Hoffman board -- you'll get a nice chunk of change if you do.

For some reason MCA had someone else master "Two's Missing" to compact disc. I bought both "Odds & Sods" and "WM/TM" from cdjapan and I've got to tell you - these titles are very nice indeed, and loaded with newer/different mixes of the original tracks and the bonus cuts are excellent as well. I'm tempted to order the "Singles +" and maybe 1 or 2 other titles, they are that good. These are numbered limited editions, by the way. My WM/TM is #1420, and O&S is #0181. I don't know how many copies they are going to press.

Kinda like comparing the British and US versions of the Beatles' Rarities album. The Who's Rarities set was designed to compliment Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy... combined with that set, you have all the Who's single a and b sides, with the exception of a few Talmy-era b-sides and the single version of I'm a Boy. By contrast, the Missing albums were designed to compile any leftover tracks that had never appeared on a US album. As such, they purposely omitted any tracks that had already been on the US-only Magic Bus compilation LP. I agree that the album covers for Rarities are shockingly bland and it's strange they used the same cover on both LPs. The no-brainer choice would have been to use the photo that appears on the cover of The Who in their Own Words for the first volume, and then use the 1971-era photo where they repeat that same pose for the second volume. One thing about the Missing albums is that they underscore the biggest, most frustrating omission in the Who catalog... the fact that the complete 1971 San Francisco show has not been released.

Just got a notice that it was shipped today. Starting to get real excited. I can't keep the new Quad box reissue out of my player. I'm so into the Who at the moment.

Just got these in the mail only moments ago. I have not played them yet, but it is worth noting that the set actually consists of a mini-sleeve for both "Who's Missing" and "Two's Missing". There is a single obi strip for both sleeves, however.

You can amend the tracklisting for the "Who's Missing" disc to include 18 songs--a studio version of "Fortune Teller" (apparently the "Thirty Years Of Maximum R & B" version) is found between "Dr. Jekyll And Mr. Hyde" and "Postcard". Also, "Two's Missing" is 19 tracks; the five bonus tracks are in a slightly different order and now include the studio version of "Melancholia" (also from the "Thirty Years" boxed set and also on the first 1995 expanded "The Who Sell Out").
What else...the live version of "Baby Don't You Do It" includes an onstage spoken intro from Roger and Pete that I'd swear wasn't on the "View From A Backstage Pass" set (it definitely is not on "Rarities".)
Finally, included with the set is a miniature reproduction of what apparently was the sticker originally found on the "Who's Missing" shrinkwrap.

Brainiac McGee , you got me all excited! I thought mine would be here as well. Maybe by the W/E.!
Can't wait to check it out, what are your thoughts of the sound?

It's my understanding that this is the first-ever release of the complete unedited version of that recording, and it should be almost three minutes longer than the edited version which appears on Rarities and VFABP. I'm hoping this stuff gets a domestic release. I'd particularly love to hear this unedited track as well as the Who version of No Road Romance that's on the new Who Are You disc. But I can't justify paying import prices just to get the handful of tracks I need.
