Quote:
Kiss bassist Gene Simmons has revealed that producer Bob Ezrin is currently remixing the band’s legendary 1976 album ‘Destroyer’ for re-issue in “Deluxe Edition” form sometime in 2012, complete with unreleased tracks and re-instating the original label-rejected cover art as displayed above.

There’s no word on what new songs will be included, but Simmons told Planet Rock that the band’s upcoming new album ‘Monster’ harkens back to the classic ‘Destroyer’ sound, and that the new record will be joined in record stores by a 10-hour DVD (possibly taking the place of ‘Kissology IV?’) and a four-foot high, three-foot wide book.

Artist Ken Kelly, who did both the rejected and the eventually used versions of the ‘Destroyer’ art, as well as the band’s ‘Love Gun’ cover, explains below why the record label didn’t want to use his original version of the art.

Apparently, Casablanca felt the destruction in the background made things look too violent, as if the band was just escaping after destroying a city. (Yeah, so?) So Kelly started working on the version we all know and love, only to have to start over a third time when the band got new stage costumes. You can purchase prints of all three of Kelly’s Kiss covers at his official web store.

Of course I'll get this and while a remix with some alternate takes and unreleased tracks is intriguing, I wish they'd do a 5.1 version as well. I think Destroyer would be a prime candidate for surround!

:yay:

Destroyer was my first long player. I saved my allowance as a kid for several weeks (rather than opting to by 45s weekly) so I could get it. So I'm very excited about the prospects of a DE. I had a Destroyer sessions bootleg with an outtake titled "Ain't None of Your Business" with Peter on vocal. Is was a slow-plodding track that was nothing special and different than the feel of the album. I'm not sure what else is available from those sessions regarding outtakes, but I'd be interested in more demos and alternates as well (in addition to what's on the box set). They should absolutely give this album a 5.1 mix as it's easily the best candidate in their vast catalog.

Agreed. There's the already released "God Of Thunder" demo with vocals and different lyrics by Paul Stanley that has an entirely different feel and tempo to it that's on the box set.

Also, the riff for "Flaming Youth" is found also on Gene's demo "Mad Dog," also on the box set.

In the last year or so, the original demo for "Detroit Rock City" has surfaced, with a somewhat different arrangement and some different lyrics...

Maybe include a full show as a bonus disc...in either audio or video?

Anaheim '76 is rumored to be one of the bonus discs for the next KISSology. Great show, Mark.

I agree Chris. I think I have it as a bootleg right now. Their shows were pretty short back then...no longer than about 80 minutes at best.

Not so sure this will be worthwhile, but I'm intrigued. Here's a small amount of info from musictap...

Mercury Records will re-release KISS classic, Destroyer (1976) in DD format on February 28.

If the content is not worthwhile, I'll pass...but let's see what will be included.

The 1997 remaster was good (one series of universally good remasterings for once!)

Still would love a hi-res 5.1 remix, but I don't see that happening.

:sigh:

yep, if it includes a 5.1 mix in DD or DTS, I'd buy it.

KISS are marking the 35th Anniversary of their 1976 classic, “Destroyer,” next month.

Universal Music in Denmark has set a February 27 European release date (Feb 28 in North America) for the Deluxe Edition of the album.

The 2CD set will feature remixes of the original LP by producer Bob Ezrin, outtakes from the original sessions, and include the record’s original cover art.

The legendary cover was painted by Ken Kelly; his original version of the album cover was rejected by the record company because they felt the scene was too violent looking with the rubble and flames. In addition, the original version had the band members wearing their "Alive!"-era costumes, which were updated for the album and tour.

“Destroyer” was released on March 15, 1976 in the US; it was the second consecutive KISS album to reach the top 20 in the US, as well as the first to chart in Germany and New Zealand.

Coming on the heels of the hugely successful “Alive!” album, “Destroyer” was certified gold by the RIAA on April 22, 1976 – a mere 6 weeks after it hit stores - and was certified platinum on November 11, 1976, the first KISS album to achieve that distinction.

I'd be very curious on the bonus material track list.

Nothing there really for me. I don't need a remix of an already classic album.

Really? Remixes?

In other words, there aren't many unreleased tunes and we want to make a cash grab. I hope, at the least, the acoustic guitar version of Beth is on there.

If they're going to do an album of remixes, they should do it with The Elder. Drop "Just A Boy" and add a heavier song in its place. Give all of the master tapes of "Mr. Blackwell" to Ace and let him remix it as he intended. Etc, etc.

That's something most KISS fans would get excited for. They need to stop bashing it and embrace it. For the average KISS fan, The Elder is like a best-kept secret. Much better than they make it out to be.

Since it says a remix of the album by original producer Bob Ezrin, I was hoping that meant he was doing a new 5.1 mix.

As we've learned from the King Crimson and Jethro Tull remasters remixes can be a very good thing.
I do love the Elder but I would never drop a song from any album whether it was good or not (and I do like "Just A Boy" despite the 'squeeze my nuts' falsetto from Paul).

Oh, he claimed it was for the falsetto... :ohno:

I'd buy this if it had a 5.1 mix no doubt. Other than that I've always been happy with how the album sounded ever since it came out in '76. Its actually the best sounding KISS album from the era.

Rumor on one of the KISS message boards has this as having a Feb 28th release date, but I don't believe it's been officially confirmed as of yet.
