HOW THEY WANT ME TO BE

You guys have been some of the most wonderful fans this past year, and I want to thank each and every one of you for supporting Best Coast. When times are rough for me, and I am traveling and not sleeping, and am worried about daily life, it always makes me feel better to know that my fans are out there.

I know I've been talking a lot about our second album, but it's still very far away from being created. I wanted to share a bit of life from recent Best Coast with you guys, so I thought I would post this song for you all to hear as a little teaser for the album.

This song was recorded a few months ago at Black Iris, the same studio we recorded "Crazy For You." This song is not properly mixed, it's mostly a rough studio demo of a song I wrote and wanted to record. I am about 99% sure that this song will get re-recorded and changed up a bit and will end up on our second album. It's called "How They Want Me To Be."

It's just a small taste of what's to come, and I wanted to give you guys something to get excited about since you've been the best fans in the whole world!

I am off to New York to start a weekend of fly in dates, so wish me luck, and I hope you all love this song and I can't wait to record more.

Love,
Bethany

They have a very fun sound. I love the ringing lo-fi guitars. I can not sell my partner on the lyrics, LOL

Best Coast planning 'grown up' second album

Best Coast's Bethany Cosentino has said that the second album from her band will be more "grown up" and less focused on her relationships.

The band are currently working on the follow-up to their debut album 'Crazy For You' in Los Angeles and are expected to release the record next summer, with Cosentino promising a more mature album.

She told Alternative Press: "The new songs include less melodrama about 'My boyfriend is annoying and doesn't like me' and more about me and what's going on in my life not in relationships."

Cosentino also spoke about the album's themes and has said that the lyrics will focus on how her life has changed since Best Coast became successful.

She added: "It's more dealing with how my life's totally, drastically changed from being a college dropout sitting on the couch watching TV to being a professional musician. The album will be a grown up record. 'Crazy For You' sounds like a young girl whining about her life. I hope this ones comes across more as a young woman who's growing up a little bit."

Best Coast recently parted ways with their drummer Ali Koehler, who has since stated that she was thrown out of the band rather than choosing to leave herself.

I was hoping for more"my boyfriend is annoying..." stuff. I think the world has enough "grown up" records.

I've seen Best Coast's "In My Room" vinyl EP in local record shops lately. I'd like to hear their version of this song.

Thanks, Linda! That's pretty close to what I expected their version to sound like. Now to find the best priced copy of the EP...

Best Coast Talks "Grown-Up" New Album, Working With Jon Brion

Best Coast's Bethany Cosentino has a goal for 2012: "I need to figure out a way to get people to stop thinking of me as the 'stoner, cat loving' girl," she wrote to us in an email this week. "I'm not really like that anymore." The California singer-songwriter hopes to shed her old image through Best Coast's as-yet-untitled sophomore record, tentatively due out this spring.

Talking about her personal evolution, the 25-year-old wrote, "I mean, I am who I am-- a weird Valley girl who likes watching TV and going to Cardio Barre. But writing this new record is the first step to the more grown-up me." For the follow-up to 2010's breakout Crazy for You, Cosentino and fellow Best Coast mainstay Bobb Bruno recorded at the storied Capitol Studios with a surprising producer: inventive pop vet Jon Brion, known for his soundtrack work for films like Punch-Drunk Love and collaborations with Kanye West and Fiona Apple.

As Best Coast wrap up the new album, Cosentino took some time out to answer a few questions about it over email:

Best Coast and Jon Brion in the studio.

Pitchfork: Jon Brion is really picky about who he works with. How did you hook up with him for the album?

Bethany Cosentino: Bobb was actually Jon's assistant for a few years, so they had a personal connection. And I met Jon at one of our L.A. shows where he played keyboards on "Our Deal". I knew he was a fan, which was really exciting because I've been a fan of his since I first heard his work. So we threw around the idea of working with Jon, but didn't expect anything to become of it.

Then we were de-boarding a plane at LAX when I got this email, and I remember leaning forward to Bobb and saying, "Uh, Jon Brion is recording our second record at Capitol Studios." Totally an exciting moment for us. We always joke that our "secret to success" is that we actually never try to make anything happen-- it naturally occurs on its own.

Pitchfork: Did you record the entire album with Jon?

BC: We recorded everything with him. I brought in my demos, and we just got to work. My biggest fear as a songwriter is working with a producer who wants to change the way I do things, but that is not the way Jon works. He just wants to enhance the way Bobb and I work. He's like a mentor to us at this point.

Bobb and I would both get so nervous recording guitar or drums in front of him because Jon is like this musical genius. He seriously would pick up the guitar and just start playing some Byrds song so perfectly my jaw would just drop. He's playing some stuff on the record too: percussion, some guitar, some keyboard; which all sounds amazing.

Pitchfork: Did you learn anything from him in the studio?

BC: Yeah, whenever I would freak out and be like, "Oh my god, this sucks," Jon would help me realize that it just needed some work. For example, there was one song that I just wasn't feeling. I hated the lyrics, I hated the vibe-- and while I was recording vocals I was like, "Fuck this." Jon suggested that I take the song home keep working on it-- which isn't something I do with my songs. I'm a very instinctual writer, I write based on what is happening in a moment, and I don't really like to go back and change things because it loses some of its personality. Anyways, I took Jon's advice and completely re-wrote the melody and lyrics. It's called "Why I Cry" and it ended up being one of my favorite songs on the record. It has that thing I love-- happy melody, sad lyrics. Seriously, this record is emo-- get ready for it.

Jon also told me that when I do interviews for this record he wants me to say that he taught me how to "chill out" because he's basically the master of chilling. Half of the day in the studio consists of sitting in the control room and talking about the most random bullshit-- it's a totally relaxed environment.

Pitchfork: Jon is known for his inventive arrangements. Does this new record feature some more unique instrumentation and variation?

BC: Jon was really clear that he didn't want us to make a record that sounded completely different than Crazy for You. He didn't want to come in and change our sound, he just wanted to enhance it, especially sonically. The studio we recorded this record in is insane, a legendary place. Fucking Capitol Studios? That's like the kind of place you dream about recording. The reverb chambers there are the reverb chambers that were used on everything from Pet Sounds to Sinatra. I think Jon really wanted to help us make a record that sounded more "grown up" sonically. We didn't want to make a "lo-fi" record, we wanted to make something that was produced, and sounded different than our first record without completely changing who we are.

Pitchfork: Are there any new songs you're particularly excited about?

BC: There is one song called "No One Like You" which Bobb and I joked is our Mazzy Star song because it has that really moody, sleepy feel to it. It's definitely my favorite song on the record. There are more slower songs on this record, which is exciting for me because I am much better at singing ballads. I wanted this record to showcase my voice, because in all honesty, that's what I'm best at. I've been singing my entire life but I was shy and self-conscious about my voice for a really long time. I grew out of that on this record. I'm not buried under a bunch of effects. There are also fewer harmonies throughout the record. Crazy For You has so many harmonies and so many backup vocals, but with this record I wanted to tone that down, make things more about the lead vocal, and make it really strong.
Pitchfork: You recently said that "Crazy for You sounds like a young girl whining about her life. I hope this [new album] comes across more as a young woman who's growing up." How does this maturity play out in the songs?

BC: Crazy for You was written in a very insecure, weird, 22-year old phase in my life. I am proud of those songs and what they say--and I know they were so relatable to so many people, which is really amazing. Most of the songs on this record are more about self-discovery and figuring out who I am. I'm 25 now, and things in my life are much, much different than they were then. This record is really personal-- much more personal than Crazy for You. The songs are mostly about me, what I've been through in the last two years, how my life has changed, and what I've learned because of it. It's a very therapeutic record for me-- I was able to get a lot off of my chest. Songwriting is the easiest way to do that for me. There are definitely still songs about love, but it's done in a different way now.

Pitchfork: What kind of things have you learned about yourself and how to deal with popularity over the last couple years?

BC: Pretty much every song on the record answers that question. It was definitely difficult for me to go from being a college dropout working retail to being a professional musician. The internet is so powerful these days that people can become successful overnight. I don't think I was prepared for what happened to Best Coast, and I definitely wasn't prepared to spend two years away from home. I wouldn't go back and change things if I could, though.

At the end of the day, no matter how tired or homesick I am, this is the one thing in life I enjoy doing most. I am going to try to stay more relaxed this go around. I feel like I have my head on better. I think I now have a better understanding of what being a musician is like, and I know how to handle the stuff that kind of throws you off course. I also just have to learn to take everything with a grain of salt. People are going to hate you. People are going to love you. You just have to deal with it and keep looking forward.

Been listening to the album recently & am enjoying it more with repeated listens. Can't say yet if it tops "Crazy For You" (for me) but it at least is as good as the debut.
