'Doctor Who' to return for new series in 2012

Doctor Who will return to the BBC next year for 14 episodes with Matt Smith returning as The Doctor. The news was released by Sam Hodges, Head of Communications for the BBC, via Twitter yesterday. He wrote,

“#DoctorWho is returning. Fourteen new episodes have been commissioned with Matt Smith as The Doctor #bbc1”

At the same time, the show's chief writer Steven Moffat tweeted,

“14 eps + Matt DEFINITELY. I've got a plan and I'm NOT TELLING YOU WHAT IT IS. Now hush or River shoots you with her Spoiler Gun.#formaqueue”

He later confirmed the run will include 13 episodes and then a Christmas special.

News of the recommissioning broke as The Sun 'exclusively revealed' that the future of the BBC favourite was in crisis, telling of rifts between BBC bosses and chief writer Steven Moffat, who The Sun claims only wanted to make "two specials instead of a long run".

His tweets would firmly suggest otherwise.

Steven Moffat is currently working on the new series of Sherlock, also for the BBC.

Doctor Who is currently in the middle of a mid-season break and will return to screens later in the year.

It is incredible to me that The Sun still has the balls to publish ANY claims about the future of Doctor Who. After decades and decades of printing wild speculation that turns out to be wildly untrue, you'd think everyone would take for granted that they're just talking out their ass.

The websites aren't any better. Most of them start panicking the second the wind shifts. they work themselves up into such a frenzy it's ridiculous. Series 7 is a year away but they have to fill space and scream about the sky falling. since DW is basically the BBC's flapship show, I think one can assume that they won't kill it just yet but that doesn't stop them from blabbing about all this now.

The Sun is full of shit about EVERYTHING. Dr. Who is just this weeks victim. It is a tabloid rag run by shysters and hacks and liars.

Now the BBC is saying there won't be a full season in 2012,but "a special run for the anniversary in 2013".
But they ordered 14 episodes for 2012.
WTF?

More confusion surrounds 'Doctor Who' 2012 broadcast plans

More confusion is surrounding the scheduling of next year's series of Doctor Who.

Previous reports had suggested that the science fiction show would not return for a full thirteen-episode series in 2012, to make way for an extended run to mark the 50th anniversary in 2013.

But now, showrunner Steven Moffat has added more fuel to the speculation, appearing to contradict what had been understood about plans for next year.

Speaking at the Comic Con France, Moffat apparently said: "Contrary to some rumours you may have heard, there will be the same number of episodes." According to DoctorWho.tv Moffat then went on to state that the transmission will change, but not the number of episodes that will air next year.

Doctor Who is currently on a mid-season hiatus. The second half of this year’s series will air in the autumn, starting with an episode called Let's Kill Hitler.

Dr Who's Matt Smith: 'Bring back David Tennant, Tom Baker for 50th anniversary'

Doctor Who star Matt Smith has revealed he'd love previous incarnations of the character to come back for the show's 50th anniversary in 2013. The actor, who is the 13th regeneration of the Time Lord, hinted that "five or six" previous versions of Doctor could return and mentioned Tom Baker, Paul McCann, Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant as people he'd like to see.

Speaking to The Sun, Smith said:

Quote:
How amazing would it be to see Tom Baker? Can you imagine just seeing him back in the scarf, man? That would be amazing. Paul McGann is a great actor and a great Doctor. I say bring back Chris and Dave, too.

Earlier this month, Tennant told Total Film that he would be interested in returning to the show but said that there are "no plans" for any future appearances.

Eccleston has been less complementary about his time on the show, recently telling the Daily Mirror that he left after one series in 2005 as he "didn't agree with the way things were being run".

The other living actors who have played the doctor are Peter Davidson, Colin Baker and Sylvester McCoy.

The second half of the current series of Doctor Who is due to return to BBC One later this year.

Benedict Cumberbatch says no to 'Doctor Who'

Benedict Cumberbatch has laid to rest any speculation that he may play the role of The Doctor in the hit BBC show, Doctor Who. Appearing on The Jonathan Ross Show, the in-demand actor was asked if, when he said “he wouldn't appear in 'an' episode” it meant he would appear in several. Cumberbatch answered:

Quote:
No. David Tennant is a friend of mine and he said 'Go up for my old job.' I don't think so. They're huge shoes to fill and I think I'm more similar to David than I am to Matt [Smith].

Cumberbatch is currently filming the latest series of Sherlock for Doctor Who boss Stephen Moffat.

His working connection with Moffat has meant rumours in which Cumberbatch would play The Timelord after Matt Smith's departure have abounded for some time.

In the interview on ITV, Cumberbatch explained that he likes "to keep his work on the set", a reference to the huge amount of publicity work that taking on the role would require.

Cumberbatch's star has risen rapidly in the past few years. He is set to work with Peter Jackson on The Hobbit, has finished filming War Horse for Steven Spielberg and is part of an all-star cast in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, due for release in the UK this Friday (September 16).

I could see Eccleston returning for a special since Moffat's in charge - I think he's had nice things to say about working with him. Cumberbatch would make a great Doctor - I'd love to see him as The Master, though.

Moffat would only do the big, multi-Doctor bit if he could do it up right. That being said, a charity event would be the only thing possible to get Eccleston back in the Tardis. And even *that* would be iffy at best. I have faith that whatever the Moff has in mind, it'll be huge. I wouldn't be at all surprised if --***theory***---they didn't shift the 7th series around to stretch out the budget for a special cgi appearance of all the past Doctors in the special. There's plenty they can do, so who knows? Plucking various Doctors out of past adventures and plunking them into the special visually and get voice actors to do various parts.

'Doctor Who' star Matt Smith: 'I want to establish a career in Hollywood'

Doctor Who star Matt Smith has admitted that he is keen to establish a career in Hollywood.

The actor said that he may try out for acting roles in Los Angeles, once filming on the next series of the BBC sci-fi drama is complete, suggesting that may be his last appearance on the show.

He told VH1:

Quote:
I've got another year of Doctor Who, but then I'm certainly going to come and give it a shot. [I'd like to] come and hang out in LA.

The star previously told the Radio Times that he was unsure when he would leave Doctor Who.

"There's no break from [the show]," he added. "It's a conveyor belt of things to do but it does get lighter. That said, I'm being creative and challenged and you've got pay the bills."

Last year, Smith reportedly signed a contract to remain with Doctor Who until the show's 50th anniversary in 2013.

Earlier this year the sci-fi series was broadcast in the US at the same time as the UK to boost ratings in America.

I think it's unlikely, I mean, there aren't any Harry Potter movies left.

An actor named as wrote:

In other news a swimmer called James has admitted he'd quite like to swim in water, and a musician called Dave has revealed he'd quite like to play music to people in an audience.

More breaking news as we get it...

Smith's under contract for the third season so he'll be staying for series 7 and likely for the big 50th anniversary--which may also be part of the reason they've delayed the 7th season until late fall 2012 and into the big anniversary year. Better to go into the big anniversary with an established, popular Doctor than run the risk of changing to an unknown quantity a year before.

'Doctor Who' star Peter Davison thinks return is unlikely

Former Doctor Who star Peter Davison has said he thinks it unlikely he will return for the show's 50th anniversary.

The show reaches its golden year in 2013, and fan speculation has been rife that producers could reunite former Doctors in a special episode, similar to 20th anniversary special The Five Doctors, in which Davison starred.

But the actor, who played the fifth Doctor from 1982 to 1984, has told Bang Showbiz that while he is open to the idea, he thinks it unlikely to happen. He said:

Quote:
I feel no need to turn my back on [a guest appearance] but I don't feel like it's the kind of thing they'd do. I'd be very surprised if they tried to do anything involving the old Doctors.

Davison has already returned to the show once since its revival, for the 2007 Children In Need mini-episode Time Crash, where he came face to face with David Tennant's 10th Doctor. However, he added: "I'm perfectly happy to have played my part in Time Crash [but] I don't feel like I'm hanging on a phone call from the Doctor Who offices."

If producers were to go with a multi-Doctor story, they would have the choice of approaching surviving Doctors Tom Baker, Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Paul McGann, Christoper Eccelston and David Tennant. Tennant himself has hinted in the past that he might consider making a guest appearance.

Doctor Who will return for a Christmas special in December and a full series next year, which is expected to move to the autumn schedules.

Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill to leave 'Doctor Who'

Doctor Who's companion Amy Pond – played by Karen Gillan – will leave the show during the next series, it has been confirmed. Show boss Steven Moffat made the announcement during the screening of the Christmas episode at BBC TV Centre in London, reports BBC News.

Pond's husband Rory Williams (Arthur Darvill) will also be leaving the programme, with Moffat promising a "heartbreaking end" for the couple.

He said:

Quote:
The final days of the Ponds are coming. I'm not telling you when or how, but that story is going to come to a heartbreaking end.

Matt Smith, who plays the Doctor, added that it was "very disappointing" that the pair would be leaving the show, but added that they had enjoyed "the most incredible journey".

He added: "But one has to remember that this show is about change and regeneration, and that's what galvanizes it and pushes it forwards."

The Christmas special, titled The Doctor, The Widow And The Wardrobe, sees the Time Lord go on adventure during World War II. Outnumbered actress Claire Skinner is among the guest stars.

Multiple specials for 'Doctor Who' 50th anniversary?

Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat has hinted that the show’s 50th anniversary will feature multiple specials.

The sci-fi show reaches its half-century in 2013 and speculation has been rife about what will feature in the special anniversary episode, with many calling for a reunion of previous Doctors.

But Moffat has now told The Scotsman that plans are bigger than that.

He said: "Why talk in the singular? The plans are at a very early stage, but we have some very clear ideas about some of the things that we're doing, and I think Doctor Who fans and kids will think it's the best thing ever. We've got a load of very big plans - the mere fact that we’re talking about this two years before the event should tell you how seriously we’re taking it."

What is now certain is that the 50th will not feature fan favourites Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill whose departures were announced last week.

Moffat also once again rubbished reports that a planned Doctor Who movie will 'reboot' the story from its TV origins and start again: "It's completely inaccurate! There's nothing there. I mean it would be lovely, yes. If anything, the only good bit about this is it might actually focus our minds on thinking that we actually should do a film."

The reports came from a comment by Harry Potter director David Yates, who had claimed to be involved. Moffat continued: "It's not going to be a different version of Doctor Who with two different Doctors at the same time. Of course not, we're not that silly. That would be no way to run a franchise, would it? I'd love it to happen, but that version you heard was just a guy getting cornered on the red carpet and not really being on-message."

Karen Gillan: 'I'm relieved to be leaving 'Doctor Who''

Doctor Who actress Karen Gillan has said it's a "massive relief" that she can now discuss her departure from the television show.

Gillan has portrayed the Time Lord's assistant, Amy Pond, since 2010 but it was recently revealed that she would be leaving the sci-fi programme during its next series.

According to the Press Association, Gillan told TV chat show host Graham Norton that she was pleased her decision had now been made public and she could speak openly about her departure.

She said:

Quote:
I have known for ages that I am leaving and it's such a massive relief that it is out and I can speak freely about it. I'm back next year for a few episodes but it's not actually confirmed when I go.

Last month, Matt Smith ruled out the possibility of him following in the footsteps of Gillan and co-star Arthur Darvill, who plays Pond's husband Rory Williams and is also set to leave the show. Smith insisted that he was "very happy" in the role and had no intention of quitting.

Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat recently hinted that the show's 50th anniversary will feature multiple specials. He also rubbished reports that a planned Doctor Who movie will 'reboot' the story from its TV origins and start again.

'Being Human' creator Toby Whitehouse opens up about new 'Dr Who' companion

Dr Who writer Toby Whitehouse has revealed his plans for the next Doctor's companion.

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter about his plans, Whitehouse said: "'I know a bit about the new companion, [but] I don't know who they cast. Even if I did, if I told you Steven Moffatt would come out here and punch me in the neck. Steven is one of the cleverest, most inventive people I've ever met in my life, and so you know it is in very safe hands with him. If he makes decisions, the chances are it's for the best - it's the best thing for the show.''

The Doctor's current companion, Amy Pond, who is played by Karen Gillan, is set to leave at some point in the upcoming series. Gillan has previously revealed that she has been instrumental in deciding Pond’s fate.

Speaking to IGN about this, Gillan said: ''Steven Moffat comes up with endless, amazing ideas anyway, but I wanted to make sure that I went on a high. There's just something quite nice and appealing about that to me. I don't know- it just felt right! I like to go on instinct.'

Dr Who returns for its seventh series on BBC One this autumn.

So, "opens up about new companion" = revealing that he can't open up about the new companion. Okay.
