As I type this, I'm listening to the Ellen Foley LP "Nightout" and I noticed that the track sequence on the back cover is not in the correct order. It actually says "See label for sequence." I remember several Kiss albums did this, and there are probably numerous other examples. Any idea why artists/labels/designers would do that? Lord knows I love trying to read the label on an LP spinning at 33rpm. I guess I find this slightly annoying, as I'd like to know what song is coming up next as I peruse the album cover. Any thoughts on this? Other examples?

A common reason that happens is when the artwork had to be prepared ahead of time, but the final track sequence wasn't decided upon by the artists and/or producers until the last minute. The earliest example I can think of is the back cover of The Beach Boys' SMiLE (or, I should say, what would have been the back cover had the album actually been released as planned in 1967). "See label for correct playing order":

That's a great point, Linda. As someone who's been doing CD production for the last 12-13 years, I can understand that being the case, but I'm guessing that a lot of times it was an artistic decision.

The old Vee Jay records "Introducing The Beatles."

I got one as a kid from the $1 Woolworth record bins. It was the 1st time I had heard any of the early Beatles 1st album recording. Some of the songs on the back cover were wrong......I don't remember how many were wrong (the album has long disappeared), but I went years thinking that "P.S. I Love You" was the actual title of what was Please Please Me.

Neil Diamond made a habit of this on many of his 70s albums.

I seem to recall the "Wayne's World 2" soundtrack having a sticker on the jewel box (not the shrink wrap, the jewel box) mentioning that "YMCA" by the Village People" was also included on the disc. Also--Springsteen's "Live In New York City" had a sticker noting the last-minute addition of (I believe) "Born To Run". Finally, the "Life And Crimes Of Alice Cooper" boxed set included a demo of the song ""Look at You Over There, Ripping the Sawdust from My Teddybear", which was listed on the "Special Forces" jacket despite having been left off the album.

There were a TON of cutouts on both the Vee Jay titles; & pretty much all the cut outs were counterfeit. There were also tons of counterfeit cutouts in the early 70's of Let It Be, Bowie's Man Who Sold The World (cartoon cover) & Todd Rundgren's Runt.

In a similar vein, the inner sleeve for Blondie's Parallel Lines LP included lyrics for a song titled "Parallel Lines," but the song does not appear on the album.
