A blurb posted yesterday on the official Janis Joplin Facebook page states:

Quote:
Stay tuned for a new release announcement from Sony Music and The Estate of Janis Joplin coming soon!

What might it be? Well, a sticker affixed to the shrinkwrap of the recent Joplin vinyl boxes "Move Over" and "Classic LP Collection" stated:

Quote:
COMING SOON

featuring rare mono and alternate versions of sings

If they have a mono version included I am so there. I have the Legacy "Pearl" 2 cd set that came out afew years back which I enjoyed. Also, I trying to remember who was the initial producer, Todd Rundgren comes to mind before Paul Rothchild took over. I wonder if there are any Rundgren productions kept in the archives.

The question I have is...why would there be a mono version? Even the most rabid mono proponents out there agree that the format was pretty much obsolete at least a year before "Pearl" was recorded.

Also--If this package is supposed to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the album, they'd better hurry up and get it out there--the album was released 41 years ago next week (January 11, 1971).

Todd Rundgren produced "One Night Stand" which Janis recorded with the Butterfield Blues Band on 3/28/70. There are two different versions available, probably different takes, although the tape speed on one of the takes is noticibly faster than the other. I believe the "Janis" 3-disc boxed set has the faster version, "Farewell Song" has the slower version. I'm not sure what else might have been recorded at this session.

Joplin's official website http://janisjoplin.com/index.php now has a blurb up announcing this set, which is set for April 17th. For some reason, the Joplin family won't let me copy and paste that blurb, but over at http://theseconddisc.com/2012/01/19/flo ... more-10956 is the following tracklisting:

CD 1: Pearl (Columbia KC 30322, 1970 – Tracks 1-10) and The Mono Single Masters (Tracks 11-16)
1.Move Over
2.Cry Baby
3.A Woman Left Lonely
4.Half Moon
5.Buried Alive In The Blues
6.My Baby
7.Me and Bobby McGee
8.Mercedes Benz
9.Trust Me
10.Get It While You Can
11.Me and Bobby McGee
12.Half Moon
13.Cry Baby
14.Get It While You Can
15.Move Over
16.A Woman Left Lonely

CD 2: The Pearl Sessions and More
1.Overheard in the Studio
2.Get It While You Can (Take 3) – previously unissued
3.Overheard in the Studio
4.Get It While You Can (Take 5) – previously unissued
5.Overheard in the Studio
6.Move Over (Take 6) – previously unissued
7.Move Over (Take 13) – previously unissued
8.Move Over (Take 17) – previously unissued
9.Me and Bobby McGee (Demo Version)
10.Me and Bobby McGee (Take 5 – Alternate) – previously unissued
11.Cry Baby (Alternate Version)
12.A Woman Left Lonely (Alternate Vocal)
13.Overheard in the Studio
14.My Baby (Alternate Take) – previously unissued
15.Overheard in the Studio
16.Get It While You Can (Take 3) – previously unissued
17.My Baby (Alternate Take)
18.Pearl (Instrumental) – Full Tilt Boogie Band
19.Tell Mama (Live – June 28, 1970, Toronto)

Kind of disappointing--we've already had one 2-disc edition of "Pearl" and that one also had the demo version of "Me And Bobby McGee", the "Pearl" instrumental, and a live "Tell Mama" (if not that same live version). I'm going to take a closer look at that tracklisting when I get the chance and see what else may or may not be previously unreleased.

Another thing I'll never forget about the previous 2-disc "Pearl"--it was one of those releases that was announced and then pushed back for something like literally a year past the initial announced date, so I wouldn't plan to have an April 17th "Pearl" listening party just yet.

Interesting. Looking forward to comments on the mastering, as Sony botched the Woodstock 2 cd series so badly.

Picked this up today. I haven't played it yet, but I'm amused by the fact that it comes with a Tipper sticker on the shrinkwrap warning of "Explicit Content Strong Language".

Did anyone ever get the chance to compare the mastering of the main album of this with the mastering from the previous 2 disc edition from 2005?
