I also wonder if this means Sony is pulling BGO's license on the early Fogelbergs; & also what masters Sony is using there (The BGO's for the 1st 2 are superb, i haven't heard the others)

Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet! This may well be the first non-Japanese CD release of "Revelation: Revolution '69" (that I've ever come across, anyway).

(Too bad it won't contain "What's Up Tiger Lily" or "You're A Big Boy Now)

What drought????????

I really dislike how these sets jump around, and skip albums in a sequence

For instance, where is Fogelberg's "Souvenirs" (released after "Home Free"). or "Phoenix" (chronologically after "Nether Lands")?

For that matter. why not "Twin Sons of Different Mothers" in this collection either?

Here's my GUESS on the Fogelberg: Sony licensed much of his catalog to BGO a couple years back. BGO did the original mix of Home Free, this Sony release is likely the remix (just a guess, but I'll bet I'm spot on). BGO also did a remaster of Souvenirs. That doesn't explain CA & Netherands (unless there was a different licensing agreement for HF & Souv), though as BGO also did those 2 (I bought Japan mini LP sleeves rather than BGO on those 2 releases).

Wow, counting the upcoming releases + the previous releases, there's something like 350+ of these UK boxes available. Most either 3 or 5 CDs. Some remastered, some with bonus cuts. Some that struck me were: Carly Simon, Chaka Khan, The Spinners, Blood Sweat & Tears, Laura Nyro, Jefferson Airplane 2 different, and on and on...

What masters are they using? Those Only Ones albums were recently overhauled...

Totally in for Shuggie...

Did that Lou Reed box with "Street Hassle" ever come out?

The Paul Young, Jeff Healy and Cheap Trick set (the second CT set I'll add) are self recommending.
Never mind the packaging just fill the gaps in your collection!

Yes. Amazon ID is B00559BT1K. I have one on the way from Amazon UK, along with the Byrds Complete box.
It's the third Lou Reed OAC 5xCD. Street Hassle, The Bells, Rock N Roll Animal, Rock N Roll Heart and Growing Up in Public.

Holy crap--it gets better! According to an Amazon.uk scan of the bck of the package, the "Revelation: Revolution '69" album contains three bonus tracks--more importantly, three bonus tracks that I don't know and have never heard: "Revelation: Revolution '69 (Single Version/Alternate Mix)", "Revelation: Revolution '69 (Single Version/Alternate Vocal)" and "Me About You (Single Version)".

Let's see--four classic albums and one very interesting album by the greatest American band of the 1960's--FOR LESS THAN $20 US!!!

This gets my vote for the best boxed set of 2012.

Do these sets still have the laziest disc art ever (the Columbia label, but with the walking-eye/giant-needle-on-small-record logo replaced by Epic, RCA, etc.)?

I got a whole bunch of CD's in the mail today, including the Lovin' Spoonful set. I was kind of surprised by how small the box was, but it did indeed contain five relatively faithful mini-sleeves, more reminiscent of singles boxed sets than anything Japan has created (like these amazing Alice Cooper titles that also arrived today) but still quite pleasing.

I played the "Revelation: Revolution '69" disc all the way through and enjoyed it very much, particularly the three bonus tracks. I've popped a couple of the other discs into the player to compare track times with those of my 2002 discs, and there seems to be enough variation to indicate that some audio tweaking has occurred in the past ten years, although anybody who knows me knows that I'm not one to prattle on about trebly mid-range brickwalled brightness.

At some point I'll sit down and play these from start to finish (and add the four Elektra sampler songs and the "What's Up Tiger Lily" and "You're A Big Boy Now" soundtracks into the mix as well) but I do try to listen to the Spoonful only sparingly. I worry that, as is the nature of pop music, I would burn out on the Spoonful through highly concentrated overlistening.

Question for people who have experience with these boxes: When you get the discs out of the sleeves, are they really scratched?

Any other input on how scratched these get?

I ask because:

1. I pre-ordered one of these (the Shuggie Otis one) from Amazon US. Since the supposed release date a week ago, the status has been given as "temporarily out of stock" with no indication of ever coming back in.

Why order from the US site instead of the UK site? Aside from living in the US and having gift certificate balance on the US site, I figured that if I got scratched discs, I could exchange them easily without dealing with overseas shipping.

2. I ordered one of the Popmarket boxes. The discs came really badly scratched. Like, unacceptably so. I am not looking for a repeat of that experience.

I've never bought these boxes. In my experience in general, cardboard packaging with no inner sleeves &/or trays often causes scratching. I am fortunate to own a semi pro scratch machine; I would be even more furious otherwise.

I have probably about 15 of these sets and haven't had a scratched disc yet.

Maybe I'm just lucky.

I only have 2 sets, but no problems with scratched discs, nor does it seem likely that they would get scratched. They sit comfortably in the sleeve, but not super tight like the typical non-tray variation that many current cds come in that are hold to pull the disc out of.

* THE BYRDS ORIGINAL ALBUM CLASSICS 5CD SONY / 88691901342 / Sweetheart Of The Rodeo - Dr. Byrds & Mr.Hyde - Ballad Of Easy Rider - Byrdmaniax - Farther Along

My copy arrived today and can confirm the discs are identical to the individual highly regarded Legacy remasters from 1997.
Covers have a reproduction from the rear of the original lp issues with only the bonus tracks listed on the card slipcase.
If the later Byrds weren't so much your thing to have paid the regular price or maybe you hung on to the 1990 Byrd Box you might like to get this inexpensive pack.
Note the previous Byrd albums from Mr. Tambourine Man thru Notorious Byrd Bros are in a separate 5 pack too.

Agreed. These UK/US 5" cardboard sleeves will never protect Your discs like a 6" Japanese mini-LP with inner sleeve. They may arrive pristine, but each time You remove and replace them, they'll scratch a bit. Not razor-slash scratches...but scuffs. Still - these boxes are irresistible catalog title gap-fillers. I only own Jefferson Starship and Carly Simon so far, but I'd definitely be in for others (despite the packaging).
