There hasn't been a stupid music poll in awhile, so here's one.

There have been many recordings, but I listed the 5 major ones and left a spot for other.

I voted for Marvin.

Even though the CCR version clocks in at 10+ mins, it hardly wastes a note.

I looked it up on AMG to see what versions I was forgetting. As they showed over 1300, I only browsed a bit. Voted for CCR, though am very curious as to what Fairport Convention's sounds like; i don't remember hearing them do it.

I have to go with Marvin. CCR a close second.

One time a buddy of mine talked me into seeing a program of student films at the University of South Florida. Frankly, most of them were pretentious and dull. Imagine the last 30 minutes of 2001 but without any narrative framework whatsoever. But they were supposed to be, you know, art. Afterwards we stopped at a nearby Dairy Queen for burgers. Marvin Gaye's version of "I heard It Through The Grapevine" came on. "Now that's art," I said.

Another version I always enjoy is Barrett Strong's on In Their Own Words, Volume 1. Always interesting to hear a songwriter's take on their own song if it's not the hit and/or popular version. FWIW, I like everything on this CD.

In high school I would've said Marvin Gaye. In college it would've undoubtedly been CCR. Now my older, wiser(?) self chose Gladys Knight. It's got an "oomph!" the others are lacking, and Gladys' powerhouse vocals. Still love the other versions, though.

The Raisins really ruined this for me.

Which version was on the Big Chill soundtrack?

Big Chill had the Marvin Gaye version, but it ran longer than the familiar single version. I think it just looped a verse.

What, no Michael McDonald YACA mention ? Seriously, Average White Band's version deserves a mention but Marvin owns that song, although I like Gladys Knight & The Pips version as well because it is different and because of her voice, obviously.

I'll always pick Gladys Knight and the Pips version because they did it first. It was a great R&B tune back in 1967.

I voted for Marvin Gaye.
Fairport's version is from one of the Cropredy festivals. I think it was 1997. Richard Thompson did the lead vocal, and I believe Roy Wood was also on it.

It was from the 1995 festival and Roy Wood was on it. It's very good. I have it on this disc:

Here's a video of the recording, not the performance:

Is there a known cd release of just the 1995 Cropredy show? I'm really not a fan of later period FC except for the reunion shows.

Not that I've seen. It looks like "The Copredy Box" covers the 1997 show. On some comps, I saw one or two tracks from the 1995 show, but that's it. The record I have is a studio recording with two live tracks, "Grapevine" and a very touching version of "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" from a concert (not Copredy) in 1997.

Yes, I looked at the link on Amazon. The only 2 tracks that interested me were the 2 live cuts with RT, which is why I asked.

Just to clarify, Richard Thompson is only on "Grapevine." "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" is just Fairport with Simon Nichol doing the lead vocal.
