A state Senator in New York wants to pass a law banning the use of I-Pods, cellphones, etc while crossing the street. Do we need more laws that essentially only protect stupid people?

I was reading about this yesterday. I find it silly, to be honest. No one should be that wrapped up in their music or conversations that they can't cross a freaking street. People have been using portable music players with headphones in one form or another since the 1980s ffs.

The more I hear about NY, it sounds more and more like Big Brother. Basically, as I understand it, you can't smoke anywhere, trans fats are going to be banned from restaurants. I mean, where does legislation of personal behavior stop. If this law gets passed, it sets a dangerous precedent. We have enough govt. in our lives as is.

I was taught to look both ways when crossing the street when I was a little kid. Hell, I'm paranoid enough that I look both ways when crossing one-way streets. I know enough to do so, whether wearing earphones or not.

I usually don't have to look both ways.
I often do, but I don't have to, I can hear traffic, tell where it is, how fast it's going, etc... just by listening, it's a mostly useless talent that I'm still trying to figure out something to do with it.
If I was wearing headphones, you damn well better be sure I'm looking both ways.

It's laws like this that will lead to the downfall of the human race. There are enough measures in place to weaken the gene pool as it is, anymore and we will quickly fade away

Deaf people have been crossing streets just fine for years...

That's correct, but the slight difference being they are always deaf, while a headphone-wearer isn't. Not that it excuses the stupidity of not looking both ways at ALL.

What kills me is that apparently the basis for this law is the deaths of two people in the Senator's district. Two, out of how many folks crossing the street? And how many have been killed because they were eating a hotdog or conversing with a friend?

Yes, that's a pretty idiotic law, all right. And does anyone really see the NYPD ticketing people for this sort of thing, anyway? Even if the law passes?

In Texas, the entire Encyclopaedia Britannica is also banned, as it contains a formula for making beer at home.

In Nebraska, their football team wears an N on their helmets. That's because N stands for Nowledge.

When I was little, I watched the old George Reeves Superman show every day. My mother explained to me in plain terms that if I jumped out the window and tried to fly that I would end up splattered on the pavement and I would not go airborne. Not exactly in those words, but I got the point.
What the hell is going on in this country??? It's like Howie Carr (Boston Talk Radio) says...the dumbing down of America continues.
