Why are they all pigs? Weren't they different animals before?
So in this particular issue, do they kill each other and fry up some ham and bacon?

The story starts off with Spider-ham looking for his "thought balloons" and goes from there.

Sold out at my regular shop. I didn't get it.
This had to be a record for earliest parody.

Ahh....eveything he says is kind of true. Not a lot of thought went into making this book. I don't regret buying it because I only had one other comic come in last week, but I doubt I'll read it again.(all those other pig characters are really Spider-Ham trying to reinvent himself.......that part is just like a posterbook....no real story.)

I liked the Wieringo pages, and the first gag about looking for thought balloons was funny, but this should have ended with the panel of Spider-Ham walking past the Civil War battle scene. Heck, if those first four pages (without the rest of the book) were inserted somewhere into Civil War # 7, that would have been hilarious.

Where's Penance?
The dollar sign is pretty funny in and of itself.

Yup. Some of the funniest (to me, anyway) names in that series were Mary Jane Waterbuffalo, Goose Rider, Ducktor Doom, Dr. Octopussycat, Doc Clamson, The Incredible Hulk-Bunny,
and my absolute favorite animal version of a Marvel superhero...

Probably someone who doesn't like the fact that it's making fun of Marvels' Civil War mega event. I have seen worse comics than this make it on the shelves from Marvel.

Captain Americat!
I have a vague memory of J. Jonah Jackass. Was this in the old Spider-Ham books (none of which I own), or some other parody, like MAD or CRACKED?

It was in the old Spider-Ham books and also Marvel Tails featuring Spider-Ham & Goose Rider.

That was Teen Titans, and I'm pretty sure it was meant to be very tongue in cheek.

ah.......Like I said I flipped through.(although since every story with CaptainCarrot is tongue in cheek,I can see how I made that mistake )
The Spider-Ham thing is also not part of the regular SpiderHam stuff...........it ends with him being angry that Joey Da Q sent him to the Marvel Zombies universe as a Zombie Spider Ham.

So, Dave Sim had this to say on his blog yesterday:
http://davesim.blogspot.com/2007/02/dav ... -12th.html
Dave Sim wrote: For those not aware of the history, way back when the earth was still cooling and I had done my three consecutive Wolverroach covers on Cerebus 54, 55 and 56—thereby sincerely pushing the boundary between misappropriation of a trademarked character and legitimate parody—I suspect that Marvel decided to fire a warning shot across my bow by coming up with a funny animal version of Spider-man that was basically Cerebus in a Spider-man costume. I don't know whose idea it was (Jim Shooter his own self?) but I have to say that I always admired the thinking behind it. It was a very measured response along the lines of "See? How do YOU like it?" while also a creative one and, ultimately, a profitable one! According to my Overstreet Guide, Peter Porker, The Spectacular Spider-Ham ran for seventeen issues from May 1985 to September 1987 as part of Marvel's Star Comics children's line. Not a bad run for the mid-80s
which was a story I'd heard before, but now he's doing one of the 100 Ultimate Spider-Man 100 covers for the Hero Initiative, and he's drawing Spider-Ham! That is awesome.

Awesome! Cool cover, too.
For any interested in more on the Spider-Ham/Wolveroach story, an issue of Following Cerebus from about a year ago goes into extensive detail on the situation. All the legal stuff, thought process, near battles, etc. The whole issue is devoted to copyright discussion, homages, legality, and so on. Very interesting stuff.
