Megadeth bassist David Ellefson reckons the band’s new album is the closest the thrashers have come to recapturing the sound of their classic ‘Countdown To Extinction’ and ‘Peace Sells’ albums.
The band returned to form with ‘Endgame’ in 2009 which Ellefson hails as a catalyst for a return to the metal forefront but he believes ‘TH1RT3EN,’ due for a November release, picks up where they left off.
Speaking to Tim Shaw of the ‘Severe Auditory Trauma’ metal show Ellefson said: “It (TH1RT3EN) came together really quickly as we did it in between the Big Four show in India and we went right into the studio and had to have it done before the next Big Four show which was in Germany. So we basically had this 10-week window where we had to arrange, finish any writing and basically record a whole album.
“We knocked out over a dozen songs for the record which was one every five-days which was a big workload but it was a fun process.
“Every song is really unique and kind of harking back to ‘Peace Sells,’ ‘Countdown To Extinction’ as every song was a really unique tune and together they encompass an album.
“I think every Megadeth album has that but especially back in those days where there was something really unique about those records that didn’t sound like they were all made in one chunk of time.
“An album from a band like Megadeth tells a story over a course of time and there’s a lot of depth both musically and lyrically to the album and a lot of really cool song titles and storytelling. “
Ellefson also revealed some of Megadeth’s tracks on each of their album’s are infact completed versions of tracks, riffs and ideas started years earlier adding weight to their belief that their albums are a journey.
He added: “‘Head crusher’ for instance is a brand new song from ‘Endgame’ yet there is a couple of the songs, bits and pieces we worked on in our ‘Youthanasia’ days. That’s kind of how it works in Megadeth. We’ll write a riff or maybe start a composition but for whatever reason its time hasn’t come yet so it doesn’t get completed for a few years.
“Infact the very first song Dave (Mustaine) ever showed me was a song called ‘Megadeth’ back in 1983 and it didn’t end up on a Megadeth album until our third one when it was retitled ‘Set The World On Fire.’
“Even ‘Devils Island’ which was probably the second song he ever showed me but didn’t make it onto a record until ‘Peace Sells But Who’s Buying.’”

From loudwire.com:
Last month, we reported that Megadeth‘s 13th album, fittingly named ‘TH1RT3EN,’ would be released in November of this year. Today, the band took the next step to introduce their lastest effort to the world by revealing the cover art for ‘TH1RT3EN.’
The cover depicts Megadeth mascot Vic Rattlehead in some sort of labyrinth with etchings on the wall reminiscent of the ‘Hellraiser’ puzzle box. It also includes 13 candles filling the bottom corners of the album cover. This is the first Megadeth album where Vic has his back turned to the viewer, perhaps representing the onward progression of the thrash legends.
Megadeth frontman Dave Mustaine calls ‘TH1RT3EN’ one of his “proudest” works. “This record is the culmination of my work over the 13 records I recorded,” remarked Mustaine. “There are moments on ‘TH1RT3EN’ that capture my every emotion, and other moments where I am releasing feelings I never knew existed! My proudest moments of my musical career are captured on ‘TH1RT3EN.’”
‘TH1RT3EN’ also welcomes the return of bassist Dave Ellefson, who left the band shortly after the release of ‘Rude Awakening’ in 2002. Ellefson told Expressen TV, “Let’s put it this way: It’s funny that 20 years ago, we came off ’Rust In Peace’ and we went in and made ’Countdown To Extinction’. So, to me, that’s kind of what this album feels like … That’s why I liken it to probably a little more to ’Countdown To Extinction’, ’cause there’s a couple of songs that aren’t just full-on, in-your-face thrashing. However, most of it is. So you guys are gonna be excited. You’ll like it. You’ll dig it. You’ll have fun.”
‘TH1RT3EN’ is set to be released on Nov. 1 via Roadrunner Records.

The album is getting rave reviews-a first for the band in a long time. And here is a damn good new song on Kimmel called "Public Enemy No. 1". This may be one of the greatest TV performances from a band-in honor of Halloween the entire band wore classic monster costumes!
and more from the show: "Symphony Of Destruction"
