'The Departed' writer to work on 'Sin City 2' script

William Monahan, the Oscar-Winning writer of The Departed, has been hired to work on the sequel to Sin City. The Sin City 2 script, by Frank Miller - the comic book's original author – was said to have been completed last month. Monahan will be providing a polish on the final draft.

Earlier this month the original film's co-director, Robert Rodriguez, told MTV News:

Quote:
We're still working on the script for Sin City 2. I'm excited about that. The time is finally coming. We've been telling everybody that we're going to shoot this year, so we actually have to shoot this year.

No actors have yet to sign up for the sequel but Rodriguez says the door is open for all surviving cast members to return. One star name still being touted for a part is Angelina Jolie.

The sequel has been a long time coming, with rumours of its creation beginning as soon as the first was released in 2005. It grossed $158 million (£96 million) worldwide from an estimated budget of $40 million (£24 million).

Since the release of Sin City, Robert Rodriguez has had mixed success. His much-hyped Grindhouse double-bill with Quentin Tarantino failed to attract a cinema audience, however, Grindhouse spin-off, Machete, fared better.

As for Frank Miller, the writer enjoyed success with 300, while his own film The Spirit sank without trace in early 2009.

The latest film by Robert Rodriguez, children's flick Spy Kids 4, is out in cinemas now.

Frank Miller opens up about 'Sin City 2'

Frank Miller has revealed more details about his forthcoming Sin City sequel.

The comic book's original author said the characters Nancy Callahan played by Jessica Alba and Mickey Rourke's character Marv would return for the second film although it is not known whether either star will reprise their roles.

He told MTV:

Quote:
Sin City 2 is primarily an adaptation of the book A Dame To Kill For. It also features the short story Just Another Saturday Night and two new stories.

Miller added: "One involving Jessica Alba's character, Nancy Callahan, that I came up with for the movie in order to tie things together and make it be more united with the first."

The graphic novel for A Dame To Kill For also features characters played in the original 2005 film by Rosario Dawson, Devon Aoki and Michael Clarke Duncan.

William Monahan, the Oscar-Winning writer of The Departed, was hired to work on the sequel in the summer.

Filming is expected to take place in Spring 2012.

The original Nancy story that would appear in Sin City 2 was mentioned years ago. I certainly am not complaining though, I am excited that it is finally actually happening (hopefully).

Actually, I do like Spy Kids. I am hardly a fan (truth be I have only seen two of the movies), but I certainly do enjoy them.

IIRC Marv had a cameo in A Dame to Kill For before Dwight got his surgery.

He did. Yeah, how are they going to work the plastic-surgery stuff, I wonder?

In fact, come to think of it, "A Dame to Kill For" explicitly took place before, during, and after the events of the original Marv story. It's weird that they're adapting it now -- they should have used it in the first film, since there were specific connections that would've tied things together.

Hopefully, hiring a much better actor than Clive Owen.

The best line with Marv in "A Dame to Kill For" was already used in the first Sin City. The "Some people think Marv is crazy. I think he was just born in the wrong time" (paraphrasing) line delivered by Dwight in the bar. That certainly will not destroy the movie for me.

The plastic-surgery angle makes this pleasingly easy to accomplish. :)

I was thinking more about plot points. That twin sister who dies as the inciting incident of the Marv story is still alive -- the two twins are in charge of the prostitutes -- for the majority of "Dame to Kill For."

Maybe Sin City 2 is going to be a prequel?

I've heard two actors. One pre-op, one post-op.

Basically the premise behind the two Darrins on Bewitched.

The Sin City timeline regularly jumps around a lot, so I don't think it will be a problem.

I think it will be a huge problem and will not rest until you agree with me.

Even as we speak, I am sitting here not resting.

Sin City 1 itself took place in three different time periods, and this one will in part a prequel to one of the stories (The Big Fat Kill), will run concurrently with another (The Hard Goodbye), and a little after the third (That Yellow Bastard). The Nancy story will take place after That Yellow Bastard, but other than that we do not know. We still do not know what the third story is, and "Just Another Saturday Night" takes place sometime before "The Hard Goodbye," as Marv is still alive.

Right, but ... well, yes, we'll see. Maybe they'll make the necessary adjustments.

I still wish they would have done "Dame" in the first film, and saved "Kill" or "Yellow" for the second.

I had no problem with "Yellow" appearing in the first movie. It was one of the better known stories and had it not appeared then we would not be getting the Nancy solo story we are going to get.

The important question is, will Jessica Alba return as The Stripper Who Never Takes Her Damn Clothes Off?
