Product Description
Throughout his career, Tom Waits has created milestone albums that serve both to refine the music that has come before, and to signal a new phase in his career: Rain Dogs and Mule Variations are both counted by fans as among these pivotal works. Now comes Bad As Me, his first studio album of all new music in seven years, which finds Tom Waits in possibly the finest voice of his career and at the height of his songwriting powers, working with a veteran team of gifted musicians and longtime co-writer/producer Kathleen Brennan. From the opening horn-fueled chug of “Chicago,” to the closing barroom chorale of “New Year’s Eve,” Bad As Me displays the full career range of Waits’ songwriting, from beautiful ballads like “Last Leaf,” to the avant cinematic soundscape of “Hell Broke Luce,” a battlefront dispatch. On tracks like “Talking at the Same Time,” Waits shows off a supple falsetto, while on blues burners like “Raised Right Men” and the gospel tinged “Satisfied” he spits, stutters and howls. Like a good boxer, these songs are lean and mean, with strong hooks and tight running times. And there is a pervasive sense of players delighting in each other’s musical company that brings a feeling of loose joy even to the album’s saddest songs. Bad As Me is a Tom Waits album for the ages.

Good news for Tom Waits fans: a new single is on the horizon and closing fast.

“Bad As Me” is set for release August 23, as Waits tweeted:

“There have been rumblings and rumors. New music, you say? Come to TomWaits.com on 8/23, and Mr. Waits himself will set the record straight.”

In June, Waits posted a sample of lyrics from the first single, as follows:

“No good you say? Well, that’s good enough for me. You’re the same kind of bad as me.”

Waits has been working on his new album for some time; he tweeted an update for fans back in February:

“Good News! Tom is currently in the studio working on his next album. Stay tuned.”

Earlier this year, Waits was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame, with an intro speech by Neil Young; Tom joined the class of 2011 with Alice Cooper, Neil Diamond, Dr. John, Darlene Love and Leon Russell.

Linda adds -- here's the digital single:

Love the cover art for the single. His last few have left me pretty cold but "Mule Variations" and "Bone Machine" were so good that I'm still excited by anything he comes out with. Those two (along with most of his albums before them) are classics in my book.

The legend that is Tom Waits returns this fall with his first studio album of all new music in 7 years.

Due October 25, “Bad As Me” is being billed as a pivotal work that refines the music that has come before and signals a new direction. Waits worked with a veteran team of gifted musicians and longtime co-writer/producer/wife Kathleen Brennan.

From the opening horn-fueled chug of “Chicago,” to the closing barroom chorale of “New Year’s Eve,” “Bad As Me” displays the full career range of Waits’ songwriting, from beautiful ballads like “Last Leaf,” to the avant cinematic soundscape of “Hell Broke Luce,” a battlefront dispatch.

A pervasive sense of players delighting in each other’s musical company brings a feeling of loose joy even to the album’s saddest songs.

“Bad As Me” will be available in a deluxe version that includes three bonus tracks and a 40 page book of lyrics and photos taken by Waits himself; the project will also be available on vinyl, which will include the LP and CD, plus full-size 12-page book.

The title track is also the first single and available now…check out the track below.

"Bad As Me" sounds like something the Stones would do.

Tom Waits: ‘Songs are pretty easy’

Image

Tom Waits has spoken out during the week before the official release of his new album ‘Bad As Me’ to say that the process of writing a song is "easy".

In an interview with Pitchfork, the 61-year-old singer also compared songs to bagels. He said:

Quote:
Songs are pretty easy. They are small, they are modular, they are about as big as a bagel. They are easy to build.

He continued: “Films are overwhelming in their magnitude and scope. By comparison, a lot of film directors wish they were writing songs because you can do it while getting your hair cut.”

Waits releases ‘Bad As Me’ on October 24. The album features guest guitar from The Rolling Stones’ Keith Richards. “I was talking to the record company and they say, "Any guests you want on the record?" And I said, "What about Keith Richards?" I was just joking, but somebody went ahead and called him,” explained Waits. “And then he said, 'Yeah.' And I said, 'Now we're really in trouble.'"

“I was really nervous. He [Richards] came with about 600 guitars in a semi-truck. And a butler. We were in these huge studios in New York, like The Poseidon Adventure. Huge, high ceilings in these rooms like football fields. They'd fill these things up with orchestras and we were in there with five guys. It felt a little weird. He killed me. I was really knocked out that he played on all those things.”

Picked up the deluxe edition at a local record shop this weekend. A lot of great tracks here- I just finished my first go-round. Early favorite tracks include "Chicago", "Talking at the Same Time", "Get Lost" (a fine rockabilly number), ""Hell Broke Luce", "Kiss Me" and from the bonus disc, "She Stole the Blush". Can't wait to give this excellent release another listen!

Sounds promising. I also ordered the deluxe edition and I eagerly await its arrival. How is the packaging?

It's set in bound book form, with lyrics and photos alternating each page. The cds are in the back, set inside opposite pages.

Sounds good. Similar to his "Orphans" package, I imagine.

Which tracks does Keith Richards play on? Is he prominently credited, or buried in the credits? Is he involved with any of the bonus tracks on the deluxe edition?

It doesn't give info for the bonus tracks, but the official site does have credits for each track on the main album. Just click on each song:

I got the deluxe edition today, and Keith is not on any of the bonus tracks. The only "guest" on any of those tracks is David Hidalgo on guitar for 1 song.

FYI, the hard-bound book is not the same size/shape as Waits' "Orphans" collection. Instead, it's 5.5" wide x 7.5" high. It won't fit on a standard CD shelf, yet it's smaller than any box sets, so it will require a special place (if I can find one) in my collection.
