For our resident Beatles experts (Fraxon, Twitchy & anyone else interested) my request (if you should choose to accept it) is to put together (in writing) an 80 minute cd of the best versions of McCartney performing Beatles songs live, all from officialy released live albums (preferably no boots unless something on a boot totally blows away all official versions).

If anyone is interested in tackling this, I'm really curious to see what you come up with.

Where this idea came from, i recently saw the tracklisting of a couple PM shows that were almost all Beatles, & was thinking I'll bet this would be good.

Here's a "setlist" taken solely from the '90s albums -- Tripping The Live Fantastic, Unplugged, and Paul Is Live (along with one b-side) -- as I'm not familiar with the more recent releases.

The Fool On The Hill (Tripping) 5:01
Got To Get You Into My Life (Tripping) 3:21
I Saw Her Standing There (Tripping) 3:25
Blackbird (Unplugged) 2:09
And I Love Her (Unplugged) 4:17
Strawberry Fields Forever / Help / Give Peace A Chance ("All My Trials" b-side) 6:46
Lady Madonna (Paul Is Live) 2:33
Paperback Writer (Paul Is Live) 2:39
Things We Said Today (Tripping) 5:01
Eleanor Rigby (Tripping) 2:36
I've Just Seen A Face (Unplugged) 3:01
We Can Work It Out (Unplugged) 2:48
She's A Woman (Unplugged) 3:39
Let It Be (Tripping) 3:53
Hey Jude (Tripping) 8:03
Get Back (Tripping) 4:11
Magical Mystery Tour (Paul Is Live) 3:15
Can't Buy Me Love (Tripping) 2:14
Golden Slumbers / Carry That Weight / The End (Tripping) 6:41

which begs the question:

if mccartney announced a tour on which he would not play one beatles tune, would it be as big as other tours?

I'd love any type of WINGS tour (but I know it will never happen).

+1

I'd go only if he doesn't play any Beatles songs.

I just saw video somewhere of Paul - can't remember where or why or what - and he talked about this and said basically that he'd never do it because Linda's gone. I wish I could remember what it was - I don't think Paul was the main subject of the video, though. I think it was about someone else and they ran into Paul and got talking about reunions.

Guess I know what I'll be thinking about all day when I should be thinking about work!

In my search (see my op) I just ran into one of the official UK Newspaper cd's, called Live In Los Angeles that is mostly Beatles, & other than a weird Blackbird is pretty good.

That's an expanded version of the 4-track Amoeba's Secret EP... never got around to picking either one up.

That was in the recent documentary The Love We Make.

That was my first thought, and then I thought, nah, too long ago. This was only last week.

But it wasn't. It was a few weeks back.

Thanks!

OK, I'm the last guy anyone around ever expected to be promoting McCartney, but if anyone wants the full live in LA here's an ebay seller with 100% feedback selling the full version delivered to the USA for $6.85 USD total.

Sorry Linda, there aren't any on Amazon USA at this time. (I didn't check Amazon UK).

Another (non-McCartney) cheap thrill from the same seller:

Some of those newspaper cd's are pretty cool. I've also got the CSN live one.

Paul McCartney concert: Let it be at new stadium, 49ers say
Phillip Matier & Andrew Ross
Sunday, April 13, 2014
http://www.sfgate.com/bayarea/matier-ro ... 398160.php

The 49ers are in talks with Paul McCartney to perform the opening concert at their new Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara - a move that would effectively yank the rug out from under San Francisco's plans for the music legend to headline a final send-off concert at Candlestick Park.

Mayor Ed Lee personally invited McCartney to close the Stick when the former Beatle played at the Outside Lands festival in Golden Gate Park last year.

The idea was to say goodbye to the ballpark where the Beatles played their final paid concert in 1966.

McCartney's reps and the city had been talking since Lee made the offer, and City Hall was convinced that the show was all but a done deal.

It all changed, however, when McCartney's envoys, including his worldwide concert promoter, Barrie Marshall, toured Candlestick last month and let slip that they had just visited Levi's Stadium as part of negotiations with the Niners for an opening concert there in early August.

It was a blindside hit that had city officials feeling betrayed.

Team execs insisted to San Francisco officials that they had been approached about hosting a McCartney show by Live Nation, the national promoter that has a financial stake in Sir Paul's management company.

Besides, the Niners said they had a fiduciary responsibility to their sponsors - including Levi's, which has a $220 million naming-rights deal at the stadium - to host a certain number of concerts a year.

"Classless" is how one San Francisco official greeted the Niners' play - which some see as the latest in a string of insults aimed at the city since owner John York announced in 2006 that the team was leaving town.

Sarah Ballard, spokeswoman for the city's Recreation and Park Department, which runs Candlestick, expressed disappointment at the prospect of losing the concert. But she steered clear of any name calling, noting that the decision on where to play was ultimately McCartney's.

Mayoral spokeswoman Christine Falvey said that regardless of how it all plays out, "the city is going to have a great farewell for Candlestick for the public." A representative for Live Nation said the company had no comment.

In a statement, the Niners said they book events on behalf of the Santa Clara Stadium Authority and "we continue to seek world-class sports and entertainment events that benefit the entire region."

Cool, 2 entertainers I'm not fond of: the 49's (Seahwalks most hated rival) & McCartney (what a waste of talent since he left the Beatles!)

McCartney hasn't wasted his talent post-Beatles so much as his talent, when combined with the talents of the other three Beatles, was able to rise to a level beyond that of which he was capable by himself. John Lennon--same thing.

There's some truth to that. I've always felt that JL's bitterness balanced out PM's sticky sweetness & vice-versa. Though I don't feel that PM has done anything solo (well anything except 1 song, Maybe I'm Amazed) even close to Imagine (the album) or Plastic Ono Band (again, the album). Though other than a few singles, I could also live without out much other solo Lennon too, even though I do have the first JL box set

Saying this would probably get me cyber-garrotted on a Lennon fan board, but I think for the time period (1970-1980) in which both Lennon and McCartney issued solo releases, McCartney's catalog was MUCH more consistent than Lennon's. Yes, Plastic Ono Band and Imagine are rightfully venerated as masterpieces. But the rest— Sometime In New York City, Mind Games, Walls & Bridges, Rock And Roll and Double Fantasy — with a few exceptions here and there ranged from decidedly mediocre to resolutely awful. McCartney, Ram, Band On The Run even Wings Over America and the underrated McCartney II are collectively better than anything Lennon did post Imagine.

Double Fantasy's reputation was immensely enhanced in the contemporary wake of Lennon's tragic murder but on repeated listens, neither the original album nor the "Stripped Down" version from 2010 hold up very well. The Yoko songs simply needed to be "Stripped Out"; critics and some fans rightfully poked fun at Paul for shoehorning Linda into Wings, but at least Paul never gave Linda half an album to ruin. In retrospect, I wished I'd picked up Gimme Some Truth, the 4-disc Lennon box set issued in 2010 that picks the high points of his 1970-1980 output, rather than buy the individual CDs.
