I've never seen this show, but have considered buying the DVD. I've never noticed any comments positive or negative about this show. Is it worth viewing?

I love it, myself. It's extremely of its time in terms of special effects, but it's Gerry Anderson goodness all the way.

I've seen a lot of comments to the effect that it has impressive production values, but not very impressive scripts. From what I can remember of the show that's a fair assessment. The production values and special effects are more impressive than they were in the original "Star Trek". It doesn't have "Star Trek"'s engaging characters. Most episodes do have a good deal of action to keep things moving. Lots of stuff blows up. The special effects are all pre-CGI, of course. IIRC they mostly hold up well.

I enjoyed it when I was a kid, but I have to warn you if you see the pilot----the premise behind Space: 1999 has to be one of the most ludicrous in the history of science fiction. I can see the moon being used as a nuclear garbage dump. I can't imagine that if that nuclear dump were to explode, it would knock the moon out of orbit. Assuming that some explosion did do so without destroying the moon, I can't see the moon moving so fast that the personell of Moon Base Alpha can't evacuate to Earth or any of the other planets in the solar system which also presumedly have bases, too.

Unless you're really into special effects and model work,I'd save your money.The stories are very dull,and the characters are more wooden than the puppets Gerry Anderson used in his other shows.

I love Gerry Anderson's work and I have all the series that have been released... ...except Space:1999. I didn't much cared for it.
I could never get past the silliness of the idea. Not just that a nuclear waste dump explosion could blow the Moon out of orbit (silly), but that it somehow manages to fly from interesting place to interesting place across the universe every week (way sillier).

I saw a poll once where respondents were invited to rank science fiction TV shows. "Space: 1999" was in both the top 10 worst shows and the top 20 best. So people apparently tend to either love it or hate it, with more people hating it.

Not once does Ian McShane call someone a cock-sucker.   I watched it when I was a kid and enjoyed it, but I watched lots of crappy stuff when I was a kid and enjoyed it.

It's an interesting show, with some interesting concepts and ideas, but it's not "Brilliant!". It's definitely a product of it's time. I'd say watch a few and see what you think, and go from there.
