Well, we may as well start a separate thread speculating about and discussing whatever Marvel's response will to the wildly successful (for now) relaunch by DC. Marvel sent out a teaser card to retailers that says "It's coming." (Which makes one think it's not just a huge announcement about same day digital.) Whatever it is will be discussed at the Cup O' Joe panel on Saturday, October 15. Quote: Marvel has sent retailers a postcard with the phrase "It's coming," Bleeding Cool reports. What exactly "It's coming" is referring to is currently a mystery, but the URL marvel.com/itscoming redirects to Marvel.com's upcoming liveblog of next Saturday's Cup O' Joe panel at New York Comic Con. Look for much more details then, as Newsarama will be there, covering it live. It's easy to speculate what the message might be alluding to, with guesses thus far ranging from across-the-board same-day digital releases (which would seem to be an odd thing to tease to retailers in this manner) or a line-wide relaunch in the vein of DC's "The New 52." It could very well be something considerably less sweeping, like a character return or long-awaited news on Marvelman plans. (Or, of course, none of the above.) Either way, it's all wild guesses at this point, and will likely remain so until next week. Here's the official write-up of the Cup O' Joe panel — to be held 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 15 at the "MTV Theater" — though it's typically broad and essentially devoid of clues: "This is it Mighty Marvel fans, the no-holds-barred, anything goes, full of surprises panel you wait all year for, and it's here! Marvel's Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada takes on all questions, shocks the audience with jaw-dropping announcements, and keeps you guessing with surprise guests. You never know who will show up, but you better be here, because this is the panel that everyone will be talking about!" http://www.newsarama.com/comics/nycc-20 ... +comics%29

It was just revealed that the campaign is promoting Shatterstar finally getting his own ongoing title.
Nice.

That alone should be as big as the entire 52 relaunch by DC.

Whatever "It" is, I'm against "It".
What will they do? Create the "Penultimate Universe", and rehash the same storylines yet again? Bleh.

I think they will go that way, but not for a few years yet. I say it will be May of 2015. You heard it here first. They can announce at ComiCon. They can build up to a big crossover, as I think theirs will be Crisis-style with previous lessons learned. Then they have a summer release. Ultimate titles and such will go away. They may try to do the one-Earth thing for a while. But Marvel has been about multiple timelines forever. They won't start ground zero, but it will be a Marvel Earth that has been in place for some time much as DC has done.

Maybe they'll adjust their books to be more in line with the movie versions... or just relaunch everything with a new #1 and just be more new-reader friendly sans continuity reboot.
At this point, they might even be able to use a reboot but after the way Spider-Man lost readers after OMD, I'd be pretty hesitant. Marvel fans like their continuity.

Hmm. Quote: Marvel Lets Their Chief Operating Officer Go
Well that sounds serious.
Bleeding Cool understand that James or Jim Sokolowski, better known in the company as “Ski”, Chief Operating Officer of Marvel Publishing, is no longer with the company.
There are no details, as of yet. I think you are meant to file this under “developing”.
When last I heard, Sokolowski was spearheading a new assault from Marvel to the newstand and the emerging Barnes & Noble and Hastings markets with a new reprint and collection strategy. An assault that does not appear to have actually emerged as of yet.
A popular man at Marvel, with a growing public face, I found myself joining Sokolowski for lunch at San Diego Comic Con. And I could see why he has that reputation. This news is… surprising.
As well as COO, he was also used to be a regular police character in the Ghost Rider comic book a few years ago.
Marvel declined to comment on this story. http://www.bleedingcool.com/2011/10/06/ ... lowski-go/

I wonder if the B&N "assault" be tied in to their dropping the DC books?

They will start their own cable channel. DisneyXD will just become the Marvel channel or something.

Anybody else suspect that just maybe they looked at DC's successful initial numbers, rushed the card out as a response, and are now frantically trying to figure out what "It" is going to be?

It's possible but I imagine they were looking at how this was going to go since it was announced and had some "back up plans" in case it turned out to be a success.
If it failed miserably, they could sit back and shake their heads at how the competition can't hold a candle to their "brilliance".
("Brilliance" being that them milking characters they had nothing to do with creating or making successful.)

The return of the Hypno Hustler.
Whatever, lets wait and see. If it was me, I'd drop the Ultimates line and make a line, digital only, that is in tune with the movie universe. Advertise it everywhere the movies are and have them add to the movie story-lines. Pick the right artists who can do good facsimiles of the actors and cool photo or photorealistic covers/trailers.

I pitched a team book with the Hypno Hustler to Marvel. It would have been awesome.

I hope Marvel doesn't do anything like rebooting their entire. I don't think it's necessary.

Advertise it everywhere the movies are and have them add to the movie story-lines. Pick the right artists who can do good facsimiles of the actors and cool photo or photorealistic covers/trailers. I'm a little skeptical of the "close as possible to the movies" approach. Comics can't succeed if they just look like imitations of movies on paper -- only without motion. Sure, you could draw Tony Stark to look as close to Robert Downey JR. as possible and have the writer give him all kinds of witty dialogue -- but it'll always fall short of seeing the actor in motion, delivering the lines with his personality and wit. I'm in agreement with the people that say comics need to do what no other medium can -- as good as movies and animation are, they can't capture the vibe and spirit of comics done by creative talent like Jack Kirby, Bill Watterson, Alan Moore, etc. I agree with stripping things down and making the comics seem familiar to people who saw the films, but they don't need to draw the characters to look like the actors -- besides, does Marvel and DC really need to start paying Christian Bale or Chris Evans to use their likeness in their comics? And what if those actors leave and new actors step in? Suddenly, all of your Hulk back issues and trades with an Ed Norton looking Banner weird since you're suddenly drawing the main character like Mark Ruffalo. I think drawign an Iron Man like the one below, except with armor-styling more similar to the film version, would be a solid move -- Long story short, if you're selling comics, make them great COMICS instead of a poor man's movie.
