Film vs. Film Challenge: Round 5 - The Finals!

Raiders of the Lost Ark vs. Casablanca

This one is for all the chips in the pot. The winner shall be crowned the IMWAN Film vs. Film Challenge Champion. Every vote counts.

Raiders of the Lost Ark. One of the most popular action adventure films ever made, a blockbuster few others can match, featuring a charismatic star and many memorable scenes.

Casablanca. Bogart's finest hour is delightful, dialogue-driven classic with a great ensemble cast that has stood the test of time as one of the most beloved films ever made.

Voting ends FRIDAY MORNING, 9 am EST. I hereby lobby the IMWAN powers that be to name this weekend after whichever film wins, with all the avatar antics that would apply. This would give us four solid days of voting, then Friday to come up with themes and such for either a Raiders or Casablanca weekend. And so - I am now lobbying.

Still going with Raiders, as I have in every round except where it was pitted against Empire (and that was a tough one). Casablanca is a great film, and in fact one of the best ever...but if I'm going to sit down and grab one movie or the other, I'm going to pick Raiders every time.

I'll make the appeal that everyone should keep an open mind when casting their vote.

Just because CASABLANCA is in black & white and lacks today's cgi effects doesn't make it an inferior movie. Ignore the limitations of the period. Focus on the characters and the story being told.

Just because RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK was made during your lifetime doesn't mean it cannot be a classic film. Even the silent BIRTH OF A NATION eventually slipped in status as further advancements were made to cinema features.

Raiders. Because Citizen Kane should've beaten Casablanca. And then Kane would've trumped Raiders. I much prefer Raiders to Casablanca. No contest really.

Casablanca. And this mismatch shows that Raiders should have lost to Godfather.

I dunno about Godfather, but clearly Casablanca has a lot going on over Raiders, and I LOVE Raiders. The levels going on in Casablanca and the diversity of the performances and characterizations lead to a much more "full" moobie.

Raiders was terrific, but didn't set out to be as deep a movie (I think) as Casablanca, and all movies of that era, really. There are some really "bring it home" moments in Casablanca that've been set up over the length of the movie and RotLA just had a different agenda.

It's a Nazi-versus-Nazi showdown.

Casablanca sucks monkey balls.

Let’s see. Raiders is fun. It has Harrison Ford at the top of his game. It has action, it has adventure. It has Nazi villains. It has a great musical score. Do I like it more than Casablanca? No. Will it win this poll? Probably.

Casablanca is one of my favourite movies of all time. It is classic cinema. Great performances all around. It has Nazi villains. It has a great musical score. It has some of the most memorable dialogue ever. It has tension, it has romance, it has historical relevance. IT HAS DEPTH. Nothing in Raiders tops the Marseillaise scene in Casablanca. That’s powerful film-making.

And I will admit to having watched Raiders about five hundred times more than Casablanca, despite owning both on DVD.

Where were the gun fights and car chases in Casablanca... just a bunch of boring old farts talking about their feelings. "We'll always have Paris"... feh... give me a Nazi getting sliced and diced by a propeller any day.

I guess I could have put Jackass 2 in the running and it would have done great, too.

Raiders, since Jaws was shunned before the first round. (Consistent, yet bitter)

Fine, so be it. I'll take my film entertaining, thank you very much. You want to assault my senses, grab hold and don't let go. Let me hear a crack of a fist as only Harrison Ford can deliver (greatest sound effect, EVER!).

If that makes me culturally illiterate, fine, I can live with that.

I went into this movie, voting for movies that entertained me. Not "oh, the editing process on this film was so advanced for its time that you can see zzzzzzzzzzz"

Bullshit.

Did I enjoy giving up the 2 hours of my life? Would I want to do it again? Would I want to sit in a room with hundreds of strangers and watch it? Would I want to cuddle on the couch with my...::sexy accent on:: lo-ver ::sexy accent off:: and watch it? Will I gather the kids around and say "hey kids, movie time!" and pop up umpteen bowls of popcorn and feed them candy till they puke?

To Raiders: Yes, in spades.
To Casablanca: No.

I do not begrudge those that love Casablanca. To each their own. This is not a "black and white, it probably sucks" argument from me. Had a couple of Frank Capra movies been up here, I'd have been voting for them. Again, I feel more entertained with those movies than I did with Casablanca.

That said, Raiders and Jaws are the two films that opened up the eyes of a 10 year old kid and make him fall in love with the movies (thank you ABC for showing JAWS on television, even edited it scared the shit out of me!!) forever and always.

Now, I'm off to find some half-nekkid nazi chick for this weekend's avatar.

and I've never watched Casablanca.

I am not even going to vote.

If we are going in this direction, then this is my all time favorite Genre movie.
