Product Description

This DVD contains two complete concerts filmed for the German TV series Rockpalast. The main show is a two and a half hour concert from the Cologne Live Music Hall in 1992 and the bonus is a shorter set from the Grugahalle in Essen in 1979. The main 1992 concert was part of that year s Better Days tour in support of the 1991 album of the same name which had seen the band successfully relaunch their career after a quieter period in the eighties. The 1979 show was one of their earliest in Europe and captures the band as they were breaking out to a wider audience after the release of their fourth album The Jukes in the same year. Live performance has always been the greatest strength of Southside Johnny & The Asbury Jukes and both these concerts show what a blisteringly good live band they are.

NOTE: Format: PAL ,Region: Region 2 DVD

UPDATE: My DVD arrived from Amazon UK, and it is actually NTSC 0, not PAL region 2.

It will not play in either of my two DVD players (both models are older), but the disc plays just fine in both computers that I tried.

Also, at the current price of 3.99 pounds, this has got to be one of the bargains of the year !! :yay:

[ price comes out to around ten bucks shipped to US: it is 3.33 pounds after VAT deduction, and shipping 3.08 pounds. YMMV ]

I have to add that there are some fantastic performances on here!

The 1979 show (about an hour long) has an expanded horn section, and draws heavily from their current album The Jukes, one of my favorites. Southside is in fine form (are those Adidas Superstars that he's wearing?), and Billy Rush on guitar is as good as I remember from seeing them back in the day. About the only complaint I have is not enough songs from Hearts of Stone album

1979 Track List:
All I Want Is Everything / Your Reply / Talk To Me / Living In The Real World / Security / I'm So Anxious / The Time / Trapped Again / Vertigo / The Fever / I Don't Want To Go Home / Having A Party / Got To Be A Better Way Home

The 1992 show (two and a half hours!) is well worth watching too, at least the parts that I have browsed so far. The horn section is down to a three-piece, and Bobby Bandiera now plays lead guitar, but the music is still red-hot. The encore alone is worth the price of admission, featuring a guest appearance by Captain Jack Sparrow (no, wait, it's actually "Miami" Steve Van Zandt) !! Little Steven sizzles on guitar, sings lead on "Forever", and joins Bobby for a moving version of closer "Hearts of Stone" which consists of only the two guitars accompanying Southside's singing. I am going to have set aside several hours to watch this whole thing without distractions!

1992 Track List:

Better Days / Talk To Me / Love On The Wrong Side Of Town / Walk Away Renee / I Played The Fool / Hard To Find / Soul's On Fire / I Feel Free / Love Is A Sacrifice / All The Way Home / Let It Be Me / Broke Down Piece of Man / I've Been Working Too Hard / The Fever / Trapped Again / I Don't Want To Go Home / Shake 'em Down / Wonderful World / Having A Party / Coming Back // This Time It's For Real / Forever / It's Been A Long Time / Hearts Of Stone

I've been a fan of Southside for many, many years and see him live almost every year. (He seems to hit the Casino Ballroom at Hampton Beach almost every Labor Day weekend or in that vicinity.) The change that I've noticed in Southside and crew is that every year they seem looser and more in command of everything they perform. How nice is it to see someone like this at the top of their game so far into their career? I'd love to see a good and long recording from recent times. Their shows are often spectacular, so why not capture them now?
