The beginning of a long, legendary career. Quite different than any other Tull album in that This Was is very much a part of the British Blues Rock scene. Some brilliant stuff here, in particular "Serenade To A Cuckoo", "Dharma For One" (cool drum solo!), "Cat's Squirrel", "My Sunday Feeling" and "Beggar's Farm". This is the only album to feature the original lineup of Ian Anderson, Mick Abrahams, Glen Cornick and Clive Bunker, as Abrahams foolishly lost a power play w/ Anderson and quit wanting to pursue a pure Blues direction. See ya Mick!

Like IP states, quite different than what Tull was to later become, but an awesome album & to my ears, the deluxe remaster of a year or two ago sounds great. Timeless!

Round 1:03 UK #10 US #62 IP, would it be possible for you to post the album title, and year of release, each time you list a new album? The "Peter Gabriel" thread got confusing for casual fans (like me), because most of his later albums didn't have the title anywhere on the cover. Thanks for sharing these threads with us, they are a lot of fun to read !!

The Tull show we saw at Jones Beach in 2008 featured quite a few numbers from This Was. Love "Serenade to a Cuckoo."

I'm going to revisit the Tull catalog sometime in the next year. I own nearly everything they've released and know the music (but not as well as I should), so this thread should be a good primer/refresher. Yep, the first album is drastically different from what they would become, but any fan of late-60s British blues would find something to like here. Standout tracks for me are "My Sunday Feeling," "Dharma For One," "Cat's Squirrel" and "A Song For Jeffrey."

Never really listened to much of the Tull catalog...I've had Aqualung, Thick As A Brick and Crest of a Knave for 20-odd years, but nevery really expanded upon it. I pulled up This Was on Spotify this morning and am listening to it now.
My main observation is that it reminds me of Cream's bluesier album tracks. Not bad!

Nope...I had it before the grammy was awarded...My friends were all talking about what bullshit it was that Metallica lost, and I was like, "That Tull album is awesome! Steel Monkey rawks!"

Steel Monkey rawks!" Crest Of A Knave was, and still is, an excellent album, that will sadly always be a footnote because of the Metallica/Grammy controversy. Although there are some "rawk" tunes, I always felt it was one of their most mellow albums, reminding me a bit of Dire Straits in the guitar sounds & Ian Anderson's vocal performance. But we're getting ahead of ourselves by nearly 20 years. One album at a time....

My Tull collection consists of Living In The Past (the original compilation by that name, not the later Greatest Hits album), Thick As A Brick and A Passion Play. I've had Aqualung but it was one of the few CDs I've sold for no other reason than I couldn't stand the way it sounded. I too just recently heard the first album and enjoyed it, and I'm looking forward to hearing (and reading about) some of their other releases.

I think Tull is great and vastly overlooked. from the bebinning thru the 70's they were flawless - since then - kinda hit and miss...FZ tried to contact Ian shortly before he passed. Ian ignored the call at the time due to some comments FZ made or might have made. After FZ passed Ian said he wished he'd contacted him. IMO that combo would have been very very interesting.
I have some concerts of cd. The last few year's Ian has no voice left...still great music...

Oh and why are they not in the RnR Hall of Fame?

This is where Tull started for me. Bouree always seems like a Sunday song for me because it was used on a sunday radio program for years in the NY area. Also love Nothing Is Easy.

Pure awesomeness. Stand Up is one of the very best albums of the 60's (sorry Folk singers) and is still fresh more than 40 years later. The addition of Martin Barre on guitar (and flute!) was pure genius-he is criminally underrated and a master of heavy riffs. There are definitely still some Blues-oriented songs here but the Jazz and Classical influences start to show (and even a little World Music and Mid-Eastern). I still get a kick out of "Nothing Is Easy"-holy shit does that kill (and still does live). "We Used To Know", "Look Into The Sun", "Reason For Waiting", "Fat Man" (sounds like something you might hear walking around a busy food market in Bangladesh) and the heavy Blues Rock of "A New Day Yesterday" are all phenomenal. Not a bad cut here. And of course, "Bouree" is beyond cool. Tull became stars with this album topping the UK charts and also scoring 2 non-album hits before the album with the all-time classic "Living In The Past" (nothing like a hit in 5/4 time!) and "Sweet Dream" (which kicks copious amounts of arse). Both are on the remasters. Of course-what do I know, I'm not getting rid of all my Tull albums in a purge.
