Does anyone know anything about this other than the track listing? AFAIK, Cleopatra is always legal/licensed, but frequently a bit cheesy/sleazy quality. First I heard of it was Renny's Sunday Fliers post this week. Per Renny's post, disc 4 MAY be a dvd; Amazon shows it as 4 cd. CD Universe SEEMS to indicate that the dvd is a limited bonus disc added to the set. B&N indicates the dvd is part of a limited edition but doesn't state if it's 3 cd + 1 dvd or 4 cd + 1 dvd.

This LOOKS like a rarities set, but i would sure like some info before buying. Amazon seems to have the best price at just under $28.

I found this info on the set at Spin CDs. I'm still debating whether to pick it up.

LT, thank you! I do have some question about the statement, "2 full discs of live material recorded at the Fillmore Auditorium - released here for the first time." as there was a recent series on Voiceprint/Bear that includes official releases of several Fillmore shows which had been running around on boots for years. I have no idea if the Voiceprints (or this) is a sonic upgrade.

That dvd sounds really cool, though!

I also own the old Collector's Choice Music 2 cd rarities set which I haven't played in years, but have always enjoyed.

This could be a very expensive week.

I did a bunch of comparisons with other releases. Here's what I've found:

Disc 1: Otherwise unidentified 1967-68 versions of Dino's Song, Gold & Silver, I Hear You Knockin', Stand By Me & Calvary are also on the studio out takes disc 2 of the out of print Collector's Choice set Lost Gold & Silver. That would seem to leave at minimum 4-5 songs exclusive here. Unfortunately LG&S while a 100% official release doesn't give specific recording dates for either disc, so all I can do is guess.

Disc 2: Voiceprint has 2 1966 Avalon shows, but no Fillmores. WGV also does not show anything from 5/66. There are both early & late shows circulating from Fillmore 2/4, 2/5 & 2/6 including on Wolfgang's Vault; 2/4/67 is one of the Voiceprint releases (as is 2/6/67). However the tracks here attributed to 2/4/67 are different than either of the Voiceprints & while all tracks show up on the WGV 6 show run, they're not even close to all being on 1 show. My GUESS is what they're calling 2/4/67 here is a "best of" the 6 shows.

Disc 3: I have seen the 3 Fillmore tracks on boots, there is an 11 song 'leg circulating from 6/7/68 & 6/8/68 combined. WGV also has a 5 song 6/7/68; all three of these are on there. These same 3 titles (without month/day) are also on the live 1968 disc1 of the oop Lost Gold & Silver. The Winterland '70 seems to be 6 of the 10 tracks that WGV offers as 4/5/70. The Fool is not on the WGV show, in it's place is something called "Subway"; might they be the same song? If so these would be the first 6 of the WGV 10. If not this version of The Fool might be a rarity.

I have not seen the Old Mill tracks elsewhere & I THINK most of the video on the dvd is new to me.

So as far as the 3 cd's go, it APPEARS that 18 of the 42 tracks have a reasonable chance of being exclusive to this set; more if you don't consider legal WGV downloads as official releases due to there not being a physical disc involved.

Based on what I have listened to (LG&S & WGV), I would think it's reasonable to expect adequate but not great sound quality (late 60's soundboards).

Hope this helped someone, if anything it left me frustrated!

One last comment: after writing the above, I threw on the live disc of S&G for the first time in years. The sound quality is better than i remember, (though it varies from song to song) & is also better than the sound quality of the WGV shows I have heard. So maybe there is reason to be hopeful on the Cleo release.........?

Bought from Blowitoughtahere on Amazon as Amazon keeps raising their price & for me the shipping is a wash against the sales tax. Hope I don't regret buying this.

I'm going to wait and read your take on the set, Geff, before deciding whether to pick this up. I've had hit and miss luck with sound quality on Cleopatra. If it's adequate throughout, I'll probably go for it. But here's hoping it's much better than that...

I'm expecting adequate on the cd's & hoping for beyond adequate on the dvd.

I'm expecting my guesses above will prove pretty accurate.

I'll write more after I've played the entire set, but quick question:

Did anyone else buy this? The last song on disc 2, "Who Do You Love", has got pretty loud digital static in the last 2 minutes or so. There are no scratches on the disc, so I am ASSUMING it's a mastering issue. I also scanned the cd with Nero CD/DVD speed. While the score of 98 / 745 C1 Errors/ Max 14 would cause me to throw out a burned disc (& there's no horrid error peaks at the end of the disc) , that does not account for the issue with Who Do You Love. I assume it is in the mastering.

If you bought this, does your copy have the same issue?

Quicky review of discs 1 & 2: Sound quality & performances vary wildly. It is pretty loud/compressed. Live stuff on D2 has problems with wow & flutter on the master tape, which makes the band sound a little out of tune. While my business is carrying the Voiceprints, the reason I've never opened/bought one for myself is I guessed they would be similar to the WGV's & the boots.

Disc 1 has at least 5 tracks not on the out of print CCM. I did not compare every song, so no idea if the others are the same. The CCM studio disc (equivalent to disc 1 here) has better sound.

Another interesting note is nothing is mentioned here about licensing . The CCM states everything was licensed from Capitol, though since all this stuff is also showing up on Voiceprint UK & Wolfgang's Vault USA, who knows who owns it?

The dvd is going to be what makes or breaks this one, me thinks.

Packaging is pretty nice except for the cardboard sleeves with no inner sleeves. The booklet is long on photos (a good thing) & short on information about the tracks. One interesting note; the included "poster" is cloth!

Edit: I just scanned the dvd. Very disappointing, it is bootleg quality. The first 3 tracks are watchable, though they should be better as they are from legit films; the rest is poor bootleg quality, though the audio on the 6 Winterland tracks is better than the video, on fact as far as wow & flutter the audio on the Winterland part of the dvd is better than anything on disc 2, though the tine is a but muffled.

While I haven't played D3 yet, LT my suggestion is unless you're a hardcore fan, save your $'s. Wish I would have.

To finish my spread out over 3 posts review:

Fillmore East 6/7/68 on disc 3 is by far the best of this set. Great stuff. WGV also shows this date, they add Codine (one of my fav QS songs), but omit Back Door Man; which they have from 6/8/68; probably the same source as for this one.

Winterland 1970 has mediocre sound (though better than disc 2), but is ruined by Dino Valenti's vocals. 3/29/70 is just a sloppy jam with no audible bass guitar on much of it; the bass fades in & out on "Rain".

I've actually been nicer to this then the 2 reviewers who had posted on Amazon last night.

Pluses: 6/7/68 & a few tracks here & there; attractive booklet

Negatives: Crap bootleg sound (& video) quality on most of it, no info in the booklet (I had to look up band members for each show on Wolfgang's Vault), & many weak performances.

My advice to QMS fans: If you'd like rarities buy the out of print CCM set on Amazon for the studio disc http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00003W0XQ/?tag=imwan-20
& 6/7/68 & 6/8/68 on WGV for the live material:
http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/quicksilv ... -1968.html
http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/quicksilv ... -1968.html

The CCM set also doesn't give specific dates, so I am wondering if disc 1 on LG&S is a compilation of 3/4 of 6/7/68 & 6/8/68. I own LG&S, but don't have the time to do a definitive comparison. If that's the case, there's really noting essential on this box that isn't also on LG&S.

Last edit: I just put on L G & S: there's lots of wow & flutter on the live disc. I may end up buying the 6/7 & 6/8/68 shows from WGV, which sound much better. Wish I would haven't bought the box, it would be a no brainer than to buy the 2 WGV shows.

I'm also really curious about the licensing issues, as WGV has a ton of QMS & my understanding is they are licensing everything they sell, & Voiceprint has also really numerous QRS live 2 cd sets from these same shows, & they are also known for acquiring licenses.

I've got the box, and played Disc One and part of Disc Two. Disc One(the studio tracks) had(mostly) passable sound(though there's bad hiss on the two renditions of "Stand By Me"). As for Disc two, I shut off my player after playing most of the first show on that disc. That concert recording had unpleasant, metallic distortion, likely a digital flaw like that heard occasionally on mid to late 1980's bootleg CD's.

That's what I heard on Who Do You Love. It may be I didn't hear the static on other tracks because I was playing it on a cheap pc based stereo.

My $'s are so tight that it really pisses me off to make a $31 mistake.

The Cleopatra label was once described(in the title of a thread on the Steve Hoffman forums) as "The Worst Label Ever"....or something to that effect.

This is almost definitely the worst box set I ever bought.

I have some credit with WGV left from a membership, so I ended up buying the 2 June 1968 shows for under $10 total.
