This is the second in our series of CD reissues of Etta James' Chess albums. All will include copious bonus tracks.

• Etta is one of the greatest-ever singers of soul and R&B, male or female.

• She spent her glory years at Chess Records of Chicago, releasing 13 marvellous LPs on the company's Argo, Cadet and Chess imprints between 1960 and 1975.

• Curiously, fewer than half of those long-players have ever been reissued in their entirety on CD.

• Recorded in Los Angeles with renowned arranger Gene Barge and veteran producer Ralph Bass at the controls, the original 11-track album is bolstered with a generous 11 bonus titles cut variously in Hollywood, Chicago and Philadelphia between 1969 and 1973.

• Compilation and notes by Mick Patrick and Dennis Garvey.

Tracklisting:

1. Take Out Some Insurance
2. I Got It Bad And That Ain't Good
3. I Think It's You
4. Someone
5. Losers Weepers
6. Weepers
7. You're The Fool
8. Hold Back My Tears
9. For All We Know
10. Look At The Rain
11. Ease Away A Little Bit At A Time

Nice note on the Ace website indicates more Etta reissues will be forthcoming!

Quote:
One of the best ideas that anyone at Ace has come up with in 2011 occurred when my colleague Mick Patrick proposed a series of expanded versions of several of Etta James’ Argo, Cadet and Chess albums that has hitherto eluded digitisation. It’s quite astounding how many of the albums that Etta released during her 15 years as the Chess group’s flagship female singer have not been issued on CD, especially given that the format’s now been with us for almost 30 years. But thanks to Mick and Kent, the number is gradually decreasing, with two “expanded editions” so far this year and the promise of more in 2012.

I wrote to Ace thanking them for the reissues and asking for more :D

They told me that 2 more are planned in 2012. Does anyone have any idea how many remaining that would leave un-reissued from Etta's Chess discography?

These are the ones that I know have been released on CD and are part of my collection:

At Last!
The Second Time Around
Rocks The House
Call My Name
Tell Mama
Losers Weepers (on its way from Dusty Groove)
Come A Little Closer
Etta James (1973 album, which I've seen also called "Only A Fool" on Wikipedia and AllMusic)

Looking on Wikipedia, it looks like these are other albums Etta recorded for Chess, and I don't think any of them have been reissued on CD:

Etta James Sings For Lovers
Etta James Top Ten (which is listed as a compilation with several new recordings)
The Queen Of Soul
Etta James Sings Funk
Etta Is Betta Than Evah!

I didn't really discover Etta until 1979 with "Deep In The Night", so I'm not really sure about those early albums. Does anyone know of others that might be missing from either of those lists?

I wrote to them too... listing the titles i want and asking if they were part of their planned reissue series. (one is, one was a "possibly in the fututre but there's no current plans", and nothing on the other two)

There's one missing from that list...a self-titled album released between "Second Time Around" and "Sings For Lovers". (not to be confused with the 1973 self-titled set).

Do tell which is the one that will certainly be forthcoming?! I do hope "Etta James Sings Funk" is one, as I love her version of "Are My Thoughts With You" (included on the recent rarities compilation along with three others from the album) and I'd love to hear the rest of the album.

I see an album entitled "Etta James" on Discogs from 1963 on Crown Records, which looks to be a budget compilation, but perhaps it is re-recordings. Is that the one you mean?

Incidentally, I'd also love someone (Reel Music? BBR? Soulmusic.com?) to reissue Etta's 1980 MCA album, "Changes".

No, it's Argo LP 4013 - tracklisting here http://www.bsnpubs.com/chess/argo4000.html.

I hope I don't get into trouble for this :? - but the ones I was told they'd applied to release were "Queen Of Soul" and "Etta Is Betta Than Evah!".

Among the bonus tracks on the reissue of "Losers Weepers" are 5 tracks from "Etta James Sings Funk". Along with the 4 included on "Who's Blue?", that leaves only 2 more tracks from the original album. Perhaps those will turn up as bonus tracks on the planned 2012 reissues.
