I've been waiting forever for the Thin Lizzy albums to be properly remastered as they are my 2nd favorite band, but I'm not so sure I want them to be remixed as guitarist Scott Gorham is implying.
There's a huge difference there-and I'm not sure what he means by remixing. That could be tampering with history or it could be a moderate approach like remastering without over-compressing. Not sure what to think here, if I should be excited or not!
And while I agree that some of the albums from 1971-83 were not well-produced (particularily the early albums like Vagabonds Of The Western World and Fighting), some of them like Black Rose and Thunder And Lightning sound great! The recent 2 disc best of Greatest Hits from 2004 sounded the best I've heard and Lizzy sound as well as the 4CD boxset from 2001. Still, I hope they don't screw this up!
Any thoughts anyone?

From Blabbermouth.net:

According to a posting on the Thin Lizzy – A Rock Legend web site, a number of tracks from classic THIN LIZZY albums — from "Nightlife", which was released when Scott Gorham and Brian Robertson joined the band for the LIZZY golden period, until their swansong, "Thunder And Lightning" — may soon get the remix treatment. The rights to the albums are in the posession of band's trustees, including Scott Gorham and Brian Downey. Now they are deciding what to do with them, and remixing the material to make it "harder" and more reflective of the band's live sound appears to be top of the agenda. Scott Gorham has said that this has long been a mission for him. "Even after we had finished recording the albums back then, we all knew that the production was shit," he has been quoted as stating. "The production of a THIN LIZZY album was always so bad, and I could never understand what we were doing wrong when it sounded so great on stage. Then we'd get into the studio and we'd lose it. We'd come up with these 'cocktail' albums. I didn't get it and I always wanted to have a go at fixing it. The first thing we want to do is pick an album's worth of material that we want to remix.

There are decent versions of most titles out there already. (hard to beat the US Johnny The Fox, Bad Reputation, Jailbreak) I am very skeptical about these 'remixes".

I think it's wrong for someone to come along years later, after the fact and remix the work of an artist who is no longer here to participate or veto the process.

John Lennon comes to mind, as Yoko has remixed some of his early albums thirty years after the fact.

Would Phil Lynott have necessarily wanted these albums to be remixed?? We'll never really know, will we? Besides, Thin Lizzy fans grew up on the mixes currently contained on the existing albums and this is tampering with history.

I would advise getting the current CDs as these will most likely replace them and probably not be reissued again in their original form.

There are some albums out there (Humble Pie "Smokin'" comes to mind) that are so bad
sounding, that I have given up, and just listen to them on vinyl. So it seems to me if there
is interest by anyone who cares enough, even if it "years later", and wants to take the time
to do something better (remaster wise, not necessarily remix) then hey, go for it!
