50th Anniversary: The Singles Collection 1961-1969



As you know, the girls signed with Motown in January 1961 and cut their first track in October 1960, making this year the 50th anniversary. This package was originally slated for a September release, and is a 3-CD set with the new release date set for October 24, 2011. It includes every Diana-led Supremes single (A-side and B-side), including first and second pressing versions, foreign language versions and promo-only singles. Yes - it's all been released before, but it's a nice compendium for non-completists who want to dig a little deeper and don't want to purchase all the various comps and box sets. My God, another must-have collection. I better start looking for a part-time Christmas job or something. This is shaping up to be one of the best fall/winter release schedules I have seen in awhile.

Very cool, but no way in Hades I'm paying $54 for this.

Wow. I guess I didn't look at the price. After all, it is DIANA ROSS: America's own "Lady Di" and our greatest natural resource. Where she's concerned all thoughts of price point are moot.

The amount of song publishing royalties in this set is a factor in the high price, but it may also be, that at this point, Amazon isn't sure what the price is, and they're playing it safe. The price will drop(at least somewhat) shortly before or after release.

The mono versions have already been offered in Hip-O Select's Various Artists series "The Complete Motown Singles Vols. 1 Through 11B

What relevance does that have to whether this set is mono? Is this intended as a companion to those sets?

Yes, but frankly, I couldn't afford to buy all those - as good as they were said to be.

If they decide to do sets like these - for their major artists like the Temps, Tops, Miracles, Marvin, et al - using the hit versions in mono - I for one, would be all over 'em!

I have to think that anything called "The Singles Collection" & contains A & B sides like that would have to be in mono.

Besides 60's Motown in stereo leaves a lot to be desired, in my opinion. That label was all about those 7" discs!

What I'm saying is that the mono versions have already been offered on CD. If this forthcoming set is a release for mainstream consumers(as opposed to being a mail order release for avid collectors), the marketing reality is that mainstream consumers prefer the tracks in stereo.

This will sound cheesy (& I am a classic Motown fan), but I own the following Supremes sets all of which were purchased from the old BMG Club for peanuts, & though the mastering is a bit bright, I would need a very good reason to get more as all the essential tracks are covered:

In many cases, I would agree with you....but certainly the songs comprising the A sides of these singles have been released countless times - and a good number of the B sides as well.

This is exactly what I would have done, if it had been up to me. Put out the lavish box sets for the collectors with everything...wait an appreciable amount of time & then mine those mono masters one more time for artist sets. The only thing I don't like is the artwork - I would have used a montage of 45s!

I believe those are in stereo - correct me if I'm wrong....but if this set has the ball-bustin', floor thumpin', mono mixes.....you may be interested.

With that release date (a Monday) and so many tracks on 3 discs, I wonder if this is a UK/European compilation, which may account for the high price on Amazon US.

I don't think it's a UK release. amazon UK shows, "Sign up to be notified when this item becomes available." No pic, no track list. My guess is Hip-O Select.

But, in a situation similar to the one with "Grand Funk Railroad-Don, Mark & Mel", I could re-create this collection exactly from my existing collection. I've got an excellent collection of Supremes single mixes & regional mixes(on the box sets "The Complete Motown Singles") and the foreign language tracks from the 2-CD "Motown Around The World".

I've checked my collection. Assuming that this set will use original mono singles mixes(as many of you wish), can this set be re-created now from existing CD's? Excepting the interview track, Yes.

Jay, this will be a domestic pressing and it's the American release date -- a bunch of titles will be coming out on Monday that week. The labels seem to do this 3 or 4 times a year, usually preceding a business holiday. (Although I'm not sure how Halloween qualifies as a business holiday. )

Yes. In fact, Amazon's listing for the digital version of this collection currently shows it as "Universal Motown/Hip-O Select". However, I'm not yet able to find corroboration elsewhere of this definitely being a Hip-O Select release -- every other mention of this set so far just refers to Universal Motown. (Not that it really matters. Hip-O Select has been under the aegis of UMe for a while now, and all of their releases end up in general release at Amazon.)
