i'm very interested in the opinions of those here, as i respect all your views. and there are definitely some avid movie fans on this forum.

i find the following films to be extremely overrated.

star wars - all friggin 6 of them.

I love the first 3 Star Wars films. The second 3, not so much.

I've seen Citizen Kane several times and still don't get why it's considered the greatest film ever made by many critics. It's good, but it's not in my Top 50.

Agree with Pearl Harbor (especially.....just complete junk...the acting is kindergarten) and little bit with Titanic (which has monumental special effects) and one of the best endings ever (not the sinking).
Disagree with the first Star Wars (that movie will always be special to me and what a cast!). How Lucas found that cast is a marvel. Everyone is perfect in their role. Harrison Ford became a star!
The next few lose that magic and just get worse and worse and worse.

Avatar is another that really isn't over-rated. When it came out everyone agreed (especially the critics) that the plot was as old as moldy cheese (and could have been written by a 12 year old) but those special effects? wow! Cameron is a master of special effects (see Titanic or T2). The story was easy enough to follow so it did well at the box office and offered state of the art 3D.
Because it made over 1 billion dollars and is the most successful $$$ movie of all time doesn't make it over rated to me.....it just made it popular to the masses. Nothing you can do about that. People vote with their wallet.

The Back To The Future trilogy is a bit over rated to me. Loved the first one but the series declines with each film till you get to the third and final film that turns into a Western????

Geek that I am, I have never seen a full Star Wars movie. When it first came out, we were about a mile from the drive-in and on our way to see it when a sudden downpour hit. Never bought it, never rented it, have only seen clips or a few short bursts.

I thought Slap Shot 2 was overrated...

I thought the Matrix trilogy was hugely overrated, but more the second and third movie. I thought the first was fairly brilliant, but the other two were bad.

Apocalypse Now is another one - maybe I came to it too late, but I was disappointed.

I liked Avatar. The 1st few Star Wars films are great.

The one movie that always comes to mind as my all time worst is Moulin Rouge (Nicole Kidman), I walked out of the cinema when they started to sing 'Like a Virgin', absolutly bloody awful stuff.

I enjoyed Avatar, though it's a bit fluffy.

I may be the only adult in the USA who has never seen any of the films you mentioned. Though Spaceballs was amusing even w/o seeing SW.

In fact, so far Avatar is the only film that's been mentioned in this thread that I've seen.

So far I agree with everyone listed here.

to that I'd add Play It Forward - any movie about a kid dying has 26 outs and 2 strikes against the batter and their team is down 99-0.

Here's one for you from one of my specialties: Classic Horror & Expressionism.

Vampyr from Carl T.H. Dreyer. It's his only film I don't like. I've watched it several times in hopes of seeing what the "experts" love about it, but I've never got this one. Part of the problem is most of the actors weren't professionals (the leading male was a count who bankrolled the film), but the plot's pretty weak too.

I was actually supposed to review Vampyr for MOC a couple years back. My hope was that a superior transfer would help me understand the film. While the transfer was an upgrade, I still didn't get it & felt any review from me would do them more harm than good, so I never did review it (lingering guilt!).

Ironically the "bonus feature" on the old USA Image edition (a short feature from 1934 called "The Mascot") is awesome! It's early stop motion of a dog doll & it's buddies going to hell to get an orange for his poverty stricken human little girl.

Who ever rated "Slap Shot 2" high? It was a lousy sequel and I can't remember a single good review for it. "Slap Shot" on the other hand...classic stuff that I have to watch every year!

I couldn't pick a better list. Oh wait, add Top Gun and Risky Business.

I'm not sure if "all six" Star Wars films are overrated, given the profound hatred that people still harbor for the prequels.

I think Citizen Kane is astounding. Different strokes!

I'm also quite fond of Kane, even if Marion Davies was a bit mistreated in the script!.

I happen to love Vampyr but I will concede that it leaves many viewers cold---maybe even a majority of viewers at this point. Murnau's Nosferatu is probably more audience-friendly, even for a silent film, and is closer to what a modern audience wants and expects from a vampire story.

I agree with you that The Mascot was highly enjoyable, though! Regrettably, my old dvd copy of Vampyr was stolen when my apartment was robbed about 6 years ago. I splurged on the Criterion edition of Vampyr last year, but unfortunately it doesn't have The Mascot on it. Bummer.

Then there's "Aliens." What a load of old sh*t, as is anything directed by James Cameron. I am amazed that people can consider that puddle o' piss in any way equal, much less superior to, "Alien."

I'm going to think about kittens, puppies, and Fellini now.

Me, too. I actually prefer it to Vampyr, even though I do enjoy that latter film, as well.

I still hope that a copy of Lon Chaney's London After Midnight will surface someday.
