Something reminded me of DC heroes murdering people and that prompted me to pop in my DC Super Heroes: The Filmation Adventures DVD. And in watching it I was reminded of two of my favorite DC things: nicknames (or secondary names) and oaths.

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0018BDDFE/?tag=imwan-20

Some of the ones on the show never appeared in the books, but many did. Oaths were things like:

  • Merciful Minerva (Wonder Woman, Wonder Girl in these cartoons)
  • Great Scot (Superman)
  • Wings of Icarus (Hawkman in these cartoons)
  • Leaping lampreys (Aquaman and Aqualad)
  • Great Guardians (Green Lantern)

Secondary names were like:

  • The man of steel
  • The scarlet speedster
  • The cosmic crusader
  • The caped crusader
  • The marine marvel
  • The boy bowman

I love these. I need to make an effort to use these more.

I did something like this back in high school.
The teacher had us studying Beowulf, and a couple of similar works, and how the modern equivalent of these sagas were comic books. She pointed out that the kennings used in some of the stories evolved into the nicknames for superheroes. (Skorsgud "the Slayer of Ice Monsters" modernized to Superman "the Man of Steel")
She knew I was a comic fan, so she had me go through and find examples of kennings in comics.
So I found a ton, and we xeroxed the pages and handed them out for the class to find the kennings.
It was a fun little project, we had an impressive list by the time it was done.

The Teen Wonder
The Maid of Might
The Dominoed Dare-Doll
The Mighty Master of the Mystic
The Emerald Archer
The Star Spangled Patriot
etc etc

Sounds like a great project!

And I kind of like "Dominoed Dare-Doll", even though it's a bit patronizing.

I seem to recall Hawkman being called the Winged Wonder.
