The visual of the movie, it's overall mood and aesthetic, is something to build a world around.

The actual story and the "rules" of that setting are not much to go on.

Replicants are cheap to cast though. Turns out you can just use people.

Ridley Scott to make new 'Blade Runner' film

Ridley Scott has signed on to return to another science fiction creation of his past, agreeing to direct a new Blade Runner film. As well as making the forthcoming Prometheus, a film that was described by its director as "sharing DNA with Alien", his first sci-fi hit, Scott is to helm a new film from the world created by Philip K Dick.

As reported by Deadline.com, it is still unknown whether the film will evolve into a sequel, prequel or even a reboot of the original 1982 film.

In March of this year, film studio Alcon secured "film, television and ancillary franchise rights" with the intention to produce prequels and sequels.

Harrison Ford, who played Deckard in the original film, was once quoted as calling aspects of the original film's shoot, "a fucking nightmare".

Iin the same interview, Ford also remarked that he "truly admired Ridley" and his subsequent work, saying the director had matured as a filmmaker since Blade Runner's release.

No word has been announced as to whether the actor has been approached to return.

A script has not yet been written for the new Blade Runner. Prometheus is due for release in the UK on June 1, 2012.

Blade Runner is one of my all time favorite movies. I take issue with the article saying: "Blade Runner took place in a dystopian future Los Angeles, populated by robot 'replicants'."

Yes, there are replicants, but they are not human - which is the implication of the word "populated". Most, if not all, animals are replicants. Human replicants, however, are eliminated by the Bladerunner. They are not allowed to live on Earth.

Do I want to see a prequel/sequel/reboot? I honestly don't know. The mood and atmosphere of the original was so special, so well realized. I think it is the best vision of a possible future world I have ever seen. Grim, intriguing, foreign, familiar, haunting. And the score by Vangelis was a big part of that.

I am down with this so long as it is good, which it might be. If it's not, then we'll always still have the original and the nove.

There actually was a series of Blade Runner sequel novels, which I considered reading when I read Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? for class, but then I decided that I couldn't be arsed to do so. Apparently the sequel novels state in no uncertain terms that detective guy whose name escapes me (the main character) was a replicant. That's about all I know about them.

The prequel has also already been made, it was the 2004 Battlestar Galactica series.

It should be noted regarding Ford's dislike for the Blade Runner shoot that most of his negative memories of it were post production where he was forced to come in everyday to read whatever ridiculous voice over the producers had written for him that day.

I know the voice over is generally derided, but I liked it. It was noir.

It was, but some of the voice over lines were SO bad. Like just downright awful, awkwardly written and explaining things to the audience like they were two year olds. I'd like a cut where there was still voice over, just removing some of the more awful ones, but since that doesn't exist I'm usually inclined to watch the Final Cut.

I can watch it with the voice over and without, it just makes it two different movies(the voiceover gives the movie a happy ending feel, while the DC and FC without don't). According to Scott they throw hints in Blade Runner: The Final Cut about Deckard that point to him being a Replicant(the Unicorn dream, some reflection in his eyes, etc).

Now as to a sequel or prequel, I don't know how I'll feel about it. Blade Runner was ahead of it's time when it came out, I just don't know that the CGI used can give the feel of the original.

I just added teh Final Cut to my Netflix queue. I've seen the movie twice before but don't remember much about it. Except for the Japanese woman's face on the huge digital billboard.

I think Ridley Scott wants Deckard to be a replicant. The book is intentionally ambiguous, because the whole point is that thinking about these replicants makes Deckard question the nature of his own existence.

And the more fundamental question is not "Am I a replicant?" It is "What would be the real difference between me and a replicant? Am I not the sum total of my memories?"

I can't stand this movie.

One of the ones that I honestly don't see the appeal for.

In "Dark Days: The Making of Blade Runner" they say that the narration was tacked on because of a test screening, the movie wasn't supposed to have it at all. IIRC, PKD liked it without the narration as well(it's been a while since I watched the making of, so my memory could be false).

That's pretty much the correct story.

I think audiences didn't understand what was going on, and the voice-over narration helped them get it.

Eh. I recently watched this movie a couple of months ago and found it very dull (along with another friend I watched it with). Maybe it was the edition I watched but it seemed to long and full of itself.

Don't think I'm going to bother with any sequel, prequel, or whatever is done with it.

Ironic, because it's really not a complex story at all. Rogue replicants. Replicant hunter. Girl who may or may not be one. Period.

Ridley Scott confirms new 'Blade Runner' will be sequel

Ridley Scott has suggested that the new Blade Runner movie will be a straight sequel.

Plans have been afoot for an follow-up of sorts to the 1982 sci-fi classic for some time, but no details have been revealed about what form the film would take. Now, Scott has apparently confirmed that the film will pick up the same story.

He told the Wall Street Journal: "It's liable to be a sequel. I think I'm close to finding a writer that might be able to help me deliver. We're quite a long way in actually."

However, Scott added that it seems unlikely that Harrison Ford will reprise his role of Rick Deckard from the original film: "No, not really. Not with the past cast."

Scott has been delving back into his history for his latest projects. His new sci-fi epic Prometheus is said to be a prequel to the Alien saga. It stars Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender.

I hope it doesn't have Rick Deckard in it. Ridley was convinced he was a replicant.
