I can see the point of taking the time to make sure these reissues are done right but on the other hand 2 years seems a long timeline for 9 albums and a box set.

I prefer having it broken down, both for budgetary reasons and I find that I get a bit fatigued/slow to devour massive box sets.
That said, this is Billy Corgan we're talking about, the musical king of broken promises. If he's not satisfied with the sales of the early reissues, the rest won't see the light of day. If people aren't receptive enough to his new songs on the next tour, he will bury the old material in a fit of rage (like a rat in a cage). If James Iha does an interview where he says something like, "Billy is an incredible songwriter and I wish him nothing but the best," Billy will respond with an insult and flush any tapes that Iha appears on down the toilet. If there's a rainbow in the sky and the sun is shining, Billy will send out goons to retrieve everyone's Smashing Pumpkins LPs/CDs/cassettes/MP3s/etc. and destroy every single copy of every single SP track.

I posted a link to the Corgan video announcing this in another thread. In it, he says that he's been negotiating for ten years for the right to release vault material "any time we want, any way we want."

Huh? This is also the Billy Corgan that allows fans to tape every live show and post the tapes on the internet, who gives away cassette copies of demos, who released a double album online for free and has released something like ten straight songs for free as well. I'll be the first to agree that Corgan can be a jackass, but I don't have a clue who the Billy Corgan you're talking about--the one who buries old material in a fit of rage and flushes tapes down the toilet and sends out goons to destroy every copy of every single SP track--I don't have a clue who that is.

I think it's the bald guy.
Maybe Iha told him his hair looked nice one day.

I lke Billy Corgan and wish him the best in retaining control of his work. I was recently wondering what ever happened to the Deluxe issue that was forthcoming but now I see it most likely be released next year.
Looking forward to the reissue program and especially the box set noted.

He's also the guy who taunted fans incessantly during the 20th anniversary tour, deleted his Facebook because fans dared to offer criticism, has repeatedly slagged off almost every person he's worked with in his professional career without coming to the realization that maybe he's the problem, and has indeed remarked that there were tons of great Zwan tapes that fans would never get to hear purely because it sickened him to think of his bandmates (though he appears to have softened his stance on that issue, though Zwan's rights won't transfer to him until at least 2014).
I respect the guy as a musician whole-heartedly and have continued supporting him and enjoying his old and new work...but he really changes on a dime. I don't want to be cynical here; just realistic. He mentioned that he hopes the new album Oceania will come out September 1, but knowing his track record, I'd be surprised if we saw it before the end of 2011. I hope I'm wrong and would gladly, gladly eat crow on that.

Well...yeah...Corgan is a mercurial, immature jackass--but he's given away a ton of free music. No matter what else I may think about the guy (a Pumpkins concert back in 2000 was the worst concert I've ever attended, due largely to Corgan's off-key singing and petulant haranguing of the audience) I keep going back to the music.

Corgan also picked on the apathetic audience at a concert in 2000 at Purdue supporting their last (crappy) album. He kept screaming "What the fuck?" at us, over and over.
The thing about the Pumpkins, and I love 'em, is that their albums have a ton of filler. Corgan is all about the excess. Especially on the double albums. Really, the greatest hits have everything they ever recorded that was worthwhile.

Some interesting comments from Corgan in a blog post about the upcoming reissues, including observations about bootlegs, digital downloads, physical product, ultra-deluxe boxed sets, and track selection:
The SP archive project, for which we don't yet have an official nom de plume, is now fully underway. People are being hired, wired, and fired up with this insane pile of stuff to go through. The main focus of our tape transfers is to take any materials from 1985-1994 that are relevant to the Gish, Siamese Dream, or Pisces Iscariot albums and get them into a stable, 96k format. This makes it easier for me to instantly jut around and hear what we have. It is a surreal experience to listen to a demo from 1987 and have no memory of ever recording it, but knowing from the chords and the style that is indeed you that is playing!
A few days ago I started to listen through, in no particular order, to demo tapes related to those early years, and found a lot of ideas that sounded fresh and interesting to me, considering I know now the outcome of those different approaches and interests as I was laying them out then in pursuit of a new sound. Most of the materials would be of little interest to the mainstream fan, but the beauty is we can release these ideas and snippets if we can find the right way to do so. If I had to make a choice today, it would probably be something along the lines of outline the project, and see who might want to buy in with a guarantee that they are assured a limited edition pressing. We all know the songs will be bootlegged, there is no mystery in that anymore, but I feel that because of what these ideas are, in essence a real peek under the covers of how these albums came together, that there will be enough fans who would want to own a physical copy. Putting them together for digital consumption is easy, but probably not going to excite enough people. I know I get motivated when I think about a 20 album vinyl set of my demos from 1985-1994, even if only 500 fans wanted every one, because it means together we get to make something permanent that requires love, and a cover photo, and some liner notes, etc. In essence it is motivating to share more than just a digital file; to make art.
Our main focus in the short term however is to find the relevant songs to be part of the bonus disc on each release, and to get these together in time to get out before Christmas of this year. There are many obvious choices to choose from, for example 'Drown' from the Singles soundtrack and 'Starla', which was the B-side of the UK 'I am One' single for 'Gish' bonus disc. On the surface, if you already own those songs, you might say 'why do I need them again?' Which is a good question I myself ask as a fan. So for example, for 'Drown', we may release an alternate version with has a completely different take of the long end guitar solo, mixed by Butch Vig in 1992. With 'Starla', we've talked about a completely new Kerry Brown mix 2011 style, with the original mix still being available on the 'Pisces Iscariot' record. These of course are those more known titles, but we remain hopeful to find those hidden gems that have never been heard by anyone. For example, I came across a tape the other day where I had played live, right onto an 8 track recorder, 5 songs acoustic, 'Rocket' being one of them. This version I know has never been bootlegged out. But I also found on that same tape 2 unknown songs which are half-written, with me kind of faking lyrics as I often do when I'm writing a song. I never had any intention for anyone to ever hear these versions, and in their raw form are probably not release worthy, at least not commercially. But what I might do is 'finish' the songs now; record a final version after all these years with me on guitar and voice alone, and provide those half-baked versions on the SP facebook page for everyone to enjoy a lost moment in time. So lots of exciting choices as well to come.

The "Gish" and "Siamese Dream" sets will be released November 15th. Interesting notes: The OOP 5-disc "The Aeroplane Flies High" box will be reissued next year, while 2007's "Zeitgeist" is apparently not a part of this program at all.

Also this fall, EMI Music will honor the legacy of THE SMASHING PUMPKINS with an extensive campaign that will see the iconic band’s albums from 1991-2000 reissued in fully remastered deluxe versions, each with bonus material.
With the full support and guidance from THE SMASHING PUMPKINS--who’ve created one of the most acclaimed bodies of work in musical history, selling over 30 million albums--EMI will roll out the global catalog campaign with the band’s 1991 debut album GISH and 1993’s SIAMESE DREAM, both of which are due in stores November 15.
The excitement will continue into 2012 when EMI will reissue the 1994 compilation album PISCES ISCARIOT, 1995’s nine-times-platinum double album MELLON COLLIE AND THE INFINITE SADNESS, 1996’s five-disc box set THE AEROPLANE FLIES HIGH and 1998’s ADORE.
In 2013, their 2000 albums MACHINA/THE MACHINES OF GOD and MACHINA II: THE FRIENDS & ENEMIES OF MODERN MUSIC will be unified into one package. A best-of compilation will also be released in 2013. The pivotal group’s many hits defined the alternative music era and continue to resonate on modern rock radio, influencing a whole new generation.
For what it's worth, there is a rumor that Corgan will regain control of the "Zwan" material in 2013 (ten years after the release of the sole Zwan album, "Mary Star Of The Sea").

Zeitgeist is not part of the program because Billy doesn't own the rights yet...I think I recall reading that that one transfers to him in either 2014 or 2017.
I'm looking forward to these but I'm even more anxious for the Zwan material.

I became a Pumpkins fan several years after their heyday, when I discovered the incredible drumming of Jimmy Chamberlin. I was skeptical about the new material, but the "Teargarden..." downloads I've heard have been very impressive even with the new drummer. I'm eager to hear more, and certainly would prefer something on a physical disc rather than a download.

Transcript of Corgan's remarks in the above video:
Quote:
Hello everyone, it’s Billy Corgan, Smashing Pumpkins. Currently in the studio, finishing Oceania, I hope. Also getting ready for our tour of the US and Europe, so it’s a very busy time. I’ve got a few details to update you on what’s going on with the archival reissues and the debut of the Smashing Pumpkins Record Club, what we’re calling the SPRC. We’re going to offer a free track to start with, in exchange for your email address, because we all know that’s so valuable. So you have to sign up for the Record Club, it’s free to sign up, but you’ll get a free song. And the first song we’re going to release for free is a demo recording of “Drown,” which we found in going through the archives. It was recorded roughly around the end of ’91, early ’92, somewhere in the Gish touring we were writing songs which we hoped were going to be for Siamese Dream. And I believe in a couple days we recorded five demos: “Luna,” “STP,” “Drown,” “Silver[fuck],” and something else I can’t remember. And so this is the actual demo from that time. And as part of what we’re going to do here with the Record Club, we’re going to provide certain materials that the band worked with to make its decisions. So although we eventually hope to offer this demo for sale, remixed and updated to 96k 24-bit status, which all our releases will be available as 96k 24-bit unmastered files, the “Drown” here that you’ll have will be the actual rough mix from the time. Which we actually think is kind of cool, because even though it’s a little bit of a lower fidelity than we’ll eventually offer the song at, you do get a sense of what the band was listening to at the time… I think I’ve already said that.
Also know that we’re considering all sorts of different options, coming across these materials. One I think people will find really interesting, is we found about two plus hours of Gish-related working materials that would have been our rough mixes and things like that, at the time of making the Gish record. And we’ve got about four, five, or six hours of Siamese Dream-related materials that really kind of give you insight into the recording process. You hear all sorts of things: rough vocals that weren’t used, songs before they had particular lyrics, it’s really interesting, even for me, to listen through chronologically, because you can really hear some of the progression. So we may be offering those as sort of audio documentaries, possibly with or without commentary, so we’re exploring those options. And we may do something, where, those types of projects, we’ll offer on a basis where we’ll see who wants to invest in it initially as a start up, to see if there’s enough interest to actually have those materials come out. I’d like to see them come out, but obviously we got a lot going on right now.
So yes, we’re prepping for the tour, it’s going to be very interesting, it’s going to be a debut of some of the Oceania songs. I’m halfway through the singing at least, I’ve got maybe five more songs to go on the singing, so we’re getting pretty close. We start mixing September 1, we hope that the music will start to be available to be heard somewhere in the November area. We’re working out those details now. Oceania will have a commercial release. Because we found particularly in Europe and other countries outside the US, that… we’re finding it hard for people to realize that Teargarden is even in progress and that the tracks are available. So we’re still going to try to go back through some of the traditional chains to put people into contact with the record. Particularly because it’s an album, we do want it to be heard as an album. And uh, what else?
So, I know there’s a bit of confusion, but Oceania will be able to be heard relatively soon. So I saw some people, I think on my twitter feed, who were freaking out, saying why is the album delayed? The album’s not delayed, we’re totally on schedule, actually, it’s rare, because usually we’re not on schedule. So that’s about it for now, we’re really excited, super busy time, super busy time. It’s often, in one room we have, we have, we’re working on Siamese Dream reissue materials and I walk back in the other room and I have to work on a solo for a song. So, I’m living in about 30 different eras at once. But it’s exciting, it’s exciting to hear the music, and for those of you who haven’t seen my Twitter feed, listening to the unmastered files of Siamese Dream and then the Bob Ludwig mastered files of Siamese Dream… mindblowing. Best I’ve ever heard the record, since it was recorded. I’d accepted long ago that you would never hear the record at the level of fidelity that we recorded it at and now that moment’s here when you can hear the record like that, and wow, stunning, because I hadn’t heard it like that for eighteen years, and it blew my mind. And everybody around here is just freaked out how good it sounds. So I’m really excited, it’s gonna be a fantastic time, and just one more little tidbit of information. We’re looking at maybe including a DVD extra disc, with the… so like Gish would have an extra disc of released and unreleased materials, some things obvious, obviously something like “Drown” belongs on the Gish extra disc, but there’s gonna be unreleased stuff, Soundworks demos, things like that, and then maybe also a DVD component, we’ve unearthed some footage in concerts and things like that, some really great stuff.
So, super exciting time, I think I’ve said that about forty times. Honestly, I may not look it, cause I’m just tired. Right now I’m in the corner over here working on lyrics. There’s the, that’s the Mellon Collie piano there, from my old Victorian house. I’m working on lyrics for a song called “Four Winds Blow” or “Four Winds Chime” or “Four Winds” something, “Four” nothing. And I’ll be singing that later today. So we’ll put up a fresh update, with more information on the “Drown” release relatively soon when we actually launch the record club, but we wanted to start putting out those details now. And to be pretty simple: sign up for the record club for free, just give us your email, so we can stay in contact with you and let you know what’s going on, because obviously we want everyone to participate in this process on every level, both encouraging and also helping fund some of these projects, which will help these materials come out so everybody can share them… that’s the great thing about the internet now is, we all can connect on these issues. I know I want these materials in everybody’s hand so, it’s finally time, the time is finally here, finally no more talk… so OK, talk to you soon. Take Care. Over and out. BC out. Or something like that.
Crestfallen.com: With the upcoming reissue of Gish & Siamese Dream due out Nov 15th, what has been the process of choosing which songs to put on the upcoming physical release, and about how many songs did you have to choose from?
Billy: We’ve basically gone through all that we had in the way of cassettes, DAT tapes, and old demos on anything from 4 track to 24 track, and tried to find the songs that when put together told a little ‘extra’ story to the one already told in the official release. For example. ‘Starla’ is a song that deserves to be on the extra disc, because it’s one of the best Gish era songs that’s not on the record. For the fan who says ‘well, I already have that one’, Kerry Brown is doing a fresh mix of it, from the original tapes, that will at least cast some new light or perspective on a mixed version which was done in one long, torrid night in order to make a deadline. The original mix will still appear ‘as is’ on the Pisces release, but with a new remaster from Bob Ludwig.
As far as quantity of materials, we released probably more b-sides than any band in history. So there are some thing unheard by the general public, but alas demos that have been circulated, etc. For that fan that says ‘well, I already have that bedroom demo of Luna’, this will be a freshly mixed copy that will also be available on a 96k/24bit format, and high res files, so you will be able to get the best possible version. In some cases we are finding elements not in the original rough mix, so there are little surprises here and there.
Then there are those forgotten about moments and demos and things which have never been bootlegged, and we have found some of those songs too. It’s a nice mix on the Gish and Siamese extra discs of these pieces, which like I said, will tell a little story from the band’s perspective of what we valued internally.
We also hope to release Gish and Siamese ‘making of’ session tapes, plus every single mix on both albums, so you’ll be able to get all 7 mixes of Soma for example. Each mix is just a little bit different, to where if you listen to all the making of tapes and the varied mixes themselves they do let you peer deeper into our record making process. I know for me, it was coming across a lot of things I’d forgotten about along the way. Even something funny like us playing the riff for ‘bullet with butterfly wings’ while Butch was getting sounds for the Siamese Dream album. It only lasts a minute, but there it is in between us playing Geek and Sweet Home Alabama.

There's another free download hidden away on the main page at http://www.smashingpumpkins.com Scroll down past the two hands sticking out of the bell-shaped speakers and click on the speaker just below that on the left-hand side. It links to a download of an instrumental called "Suicide Kiss Geek No Vox". (A early version of Geek U.S.A.?)
