Product Description
The Beatles / 1 is comprised entirely of #1 hits from the U.S and UK Charts. The Beatles / 1 was originally released in 2000, breaking records by debuting at the top of the charts in 35 countries, and going on to sell over 31 million copies worldwide. It remains to this day the most emphatic introduction to The Beatles' career-spanning dominance of pop music through the 1960's. Apple Corps Ltd and EMI are proud to release The Beatles / 1 (Remastered) as a digi-pack, and feature the critically acclaimed 2009 remastered recordings. Each track was remastered by a dedicated team of engineers at EMI's Abbey Road Studios in London over a four year period utilizing state of the art recording technology alongside vintage studio equipment. Painstaking efforts were taken to carefully maintaining the authenticity and integrity of the original analogue recordings. The result of this process is the highest fidelity the songs have seen since its original release, and the experience is simply suburb. In addition the 32 page booklet remains faithful to the original release and features a foreword by George Martin, international singles cover art and recording/release information on each #1 track.

But the CD from 2000 sounds just fine to me. What's the point of this, except to have a similar looking package to the rest of the remasters? I don't get it...

Yeah, this doesn't make sense. But I'm sure someone will buy it.

They're using the new (2009) remasters, so it makes sense. It might not make sense to you to buy it, but for a completist, or for someone who's just come into the market for a Beatles best-of today, it makes sense.

I expect that Apple will eventually release remastered versions of the 45 and EP collections too. (Which I will buy, even while you tell me it makes no sense. :) Why should Jimbo have all the fun?)

Oh, you crazy kids and your remasters!!

I'm kinda remastered out myself, yet I keep eyeing those new Queen ones with the bonus EPs.

Hmmmm....

I'm not much of a fan, but it makes sense to me. This is to many fans, the first album they ever got. Some of those people are now in their 20s and might want this for the new packaging and sound, or some will get it for the first time (maybe as a download). And, it was so huge (biggest selling album of the 2000's) it's become iconic and I think this well sell enough and probably replace the old release which is now over a decade old.
And we know the diehards will add it to their collection. I would if I was a big enough fan. This is one of those release that keeps on selling, and I think it was a good move for them to use the new remasters for this release.

IP, in all fairness, I do like U2, but I'm not an uber-fan, so I can pass on this without worrying too much.

What was nice about the previous two-disc deluxes is that I had never bought those albums (The Joshua Tree excepted) in any format, so I just went "what the hell, why not get the b-sides as well?"

I'm tired. I'm confusing my remasters.

I'll buy the 45 and EP collections. While I'm sorry I once had to sell the boxes I used to have, I would hope that updated singles collection especially will have even better reproductions of the picture sleeves. IIRC, the EP collection had much more accurate reproductions of the original sleeves, while the sleeves the singles came in had no artwork on the back, just the song titles.

Apple didn't have many UK picture sleeves to work with for the 45s, so it was a hodepodge: some UK originals, some fakes (with era-accurate photos), and some non-UK sleeves which originally had the same photo on both sides. I'm pretty sure that all of the original UK EPs had picture sleeves, so that set came out better.

Not to take this thread too far off track, but have there been any "rumours" in Beatleland about forthcoming singles/EP boxes?

I'm kinda surprised Apple didn't come up with a sequel to "1", a single disc of more hits, called "2", like what was done with Elvis...

There have been rumours since the first round of remasters two years ago. :) There are always plenty of release rumours in Beatleland. There are more rumours than facts!

Can you propose a track list for "2" ?

1. Helter Skelter (alternate take) (27:11)
2. Carnival Of Light (13:48)

Two songs, get it?
