Thoroughly unexciting...though I thought I read there'd be an additional Deluxe Edition somewhere.

The last (or almost last) desperate act of a group that's fading fast. Without Steven Page...they're just not the same...and they were fading long before they kicked him out.

Yep, Steven Page. And it ain't the same band anymore.
Listen to BNL's last album, which is the first without Page, then listen to Steven's "Page One" for a clue as to what will forever be missing from the BNL chemistry.

Yep - Page leaving was the end for me with them. The chemistry that made them a fun band seemed to be gone from what I saw. I think things started to fall apart when they recorded "Second Week"...uh, I mean "Pinch Me". Even though it screamed of a record company demanding a rehash of their previous hit, it reeked of a band losing their momentum.
This is treading close to the territory they made fun of in "Box Set".

"A Singer Must Die" is even better IMO!
Your comments are right on. You could tell on their last couple of records together that they had completely tied Page down - everything that was great about BNL was completely absent. I thought Everything To Everyone was as boring as it gets until the last one without Page, which was even worse.
Page One isn't my favorite, but it's certainly better than anything BNL has done in years.
I agree that this is the last attempt by the band to cash in on their earlier achievements. I wouldn't be surprised to see a box set or two as well. Whatever it takes so that the current lineup can continue to tour at amusement parks and state fairs.

Now there would be some irony, if they actually did a box set.

Well the title of the previous Greatest Hits collection from 2001 is paraphrased directly from the lyrics of "Box Set"

Not to hijack the thread, but since some of you guys clearly know more about this band than me, I was wondering what you consider their best albums? My wife picked up a copy of Everything To Everyone on one of her thrift store excursions. I listened to it twice early this year and was a wee bit underwhelmed. I always loved "One Week" though, at least before it got so overplayed. Should I give Everything another chance, and what else is good by them?

Allow me to answer your question, Glenn. I was an early fan of BNL. I used to see them at the Bottom Line in New York starting in the early-90s, right after the release of "Gordon." They seemed to play there every 4-6 months, and each time they came back it got more & more crowded, and every show was great. They were fun & goofy, their songs were all incredibly catchy and they could really play their instruments. Eventually they graduated to bigger venues, but by '96 (with the release of the underwhelming "Born On A Pirate Ship") they started to lose me. I would highly recommend "Gordon" and especially "Maybe You Should Drive" (their undisputed classic, as far as I'm concerned).
I bought "Stunt" in '98 but the thrill was gone for me, even though it was a solid album and was their big commercial breakthrough, and stopped buying their albums. When I met my wife in 2005, she was a big fan, so I went back & revisited the albums I had missed and was still underwhelmed. However, I bought her "Barenaked Ladies Are Me" and "Barenaked Ladies Are Men," and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked them. They both reminded me of the earlier records, so I would recommend those as well.

I'll suggest "Gordon", the debut - great songs for the most part, and a lot of fun. The other one I'd recommend highly is "Rock Spectacle", their live disc. It captures some of the fun and joy of a live BNL show, although not all of it. Some excellent renditions of some of their material here, including some overlooked gems like "What A Good Boy", "Break Your Heart", "The Old Apartment" and "Jane".
For me, the wheels pretty much came off w/"Stunt". That's probably gotten the least play of any of the BNL discs I own.

Answering my own question...
Quote:
A deluxe two-disc edition of the album has been announced. The second disc will include "never before heard" rarities as well as additional well-known songs. The deluxe edition will be titled Stop Us If You’ve Heard This One Before.[3] No tracklist has been released yet for Stop Us If You’ve Heard This One Before.
