Rush shares the spotlight with enthusiastic fans during sold-out show at The Q in Cleveland

By John Soeder, The Plain Dealer

CLEVELAND, Ohio — Rush was ready for its close-up in Cleveland.

So were 14,000-plus overjoyed fans who packed The Q for a sold-out performance Friday night by their favorite three-headed rock monster. The show was filmed for an upcoming DVD release.

Singer-bassist-keyboardist Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson and drummer Neil Peart hail from Toronto, although their career took off here in the mid-1970s.

For this special occasion -- part concert, part homecoming away from home and part celebration of the band’s ongoing romance with its fan base -- Rush sprang into action with a euphoric “The Spirit of Radio.” On a scale of 1 to 10, the excitement level started at 11 and intensified from there.

Lee warbled philosophical lyrics (penned by Peart) and alternated seamlessly between palpitating bass riffs and ethereal synthesizer embellishments. Lifeson prefaced “Closer to the Heart” elegantly on a 12-string guitar and played a mean lute in the middle of “Workin’ Them Angels.” And Peart -- he of few (spoken) words and many beats -- regaled us with an 8-minute drum solo that covered all the bases, from tribal pounding to big-band swing.

But the real star was the trio’s de facto fourth member: the crowd.

Everywhere you looked, middle-aged men were 15 again, vigorously playing air drums and vying to see who could remember all the words to “The Temples of Syrinx.”

Somehow, they even managed to sing along during “YYZ,” an instrumental tour de force with no lyrics. Undaunted, the Rush faithful echoed the melody with a wordless chant.

For the centerpiece of the show, Rush performed its classic 1981 album “Moving Pictures” in its entirety, from the Mark Twain-inspired anthem “Tom Sawyer” to the reggae-flavored “Vital Signs.”

Lee remarked that it was hard to believe the album was three decades old.

Harder still to believe that Lee and Lifeson are 57; Peart is 58. Regardless, they exuded vitality and virtuosity, accompanied by an eye-popping light show, various pyrotechnics and a steampunk-themed production.

Rush wasn’t content to coast on past glories, either. Two new selections from the forthcoming “Clockwork Angels” album -- “BU2B” and “Caravan” -- impressively showcased the group’s heavier side.

Fittingly, the three-hour lovefest climaxed with a triumphant “Working Man.” After WMMS FM/100.7 disc jockey and music director Donna Halper (who was in the audience) put the latter song on the air here in 1974, Rush was on its way to international superstardom.

“Thank you, Cleveland, Ohio,” a beaming Lee said at the end of the night.

“Best! Audience! Ever! We appreciate it so much.”

The concert DVD could be out by the end of this year, Lee said in a recent interview.

For now, as they say in Hollywood: That’s a wrap!

According to Halper she was looking through albums by bands with long cuts so the DJ could take a restroom break when she found "Working Man," which fit right in with Cleveland's blue collar ethic. Somehow that seems like a perfect way for Rush to get a break.

I got to meet Donna Halper briefly at a Rush documentary screening last summer near Boston. Very nice lady. She did a q & a and talked to people after the movie. Very down to earth.

They did all of 2112 the song-not the album. I'm sure that's what you meant.

Rush ‘Time Machine’ Live DVD Release Delayed Until October
by: Matt Wardlaw

Unless we can find the cheat codes to make that time machine move forward, it looks like fans will have to wait an extra month to get their hands on the new Rush live DVD/Blu-ray. Originally set for release on September 27, ‘Time Machine 2011: Live In Cleveland’ has been pushed back to October 25.

No reason has been given for the delay, but if you’ve seen the prior work of Sam Dunn and Scot McFayden, the team responsible for the band’s recent ‘Beyond The Lighted Stage’ documentary, you’ll know that good things do indeed come to those who wait. The pair also previously lensed the highly regarded ‘Metal: A Headbanger’s Journey’ doc and the film ‘Global Metal.’

Bassist Geddy Lee spoke in a May interview about the band’s decision to feature their classic ‘Moving Pictures’ album on the ‘Time Machine’ tour, saying that it finally gave them the opportunity to play ‘The Camera Eye,’ which he called one of the “most requested songs” in the Rush catalog.

The new live release was filmed earlier this year in Cleveland (hence the title) on April 15 at Quicken Loans Arena.

More details about the upcoming Rush Live In Cleveland DVD have surfaced.

Rush's “Time Machine 2011: Live In Cleveland” concert DVD/Blu-ray will be released on Tuesday, October 25th via Concord Records.

The show was filmed on April 15th at Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio, and was was filmed by Banger Films, the Toronto-based film production company which has produced films such as "Metal: A Headbangers' Journey," "Global Metal," "Iron Maiden: Flight 666" and, most recently, the Rush Documentary "Beyond The Lighted Stage."

RushIsABand reports Amazon UK have posted the cover art and some additional details, as follows:

Rush's Time Machine shows in 2010/11 were one of the most anticipated tours ever. Celebrating 30 years since the 1981 release of their classic bestselling album “Moving Pictures,” the band performed the entire album live for the first time as the centrepiece of the concerts. The shows also featured favourite tracks from across their lengthy career and two new songs expected to feature on their next studio album. As ever, the concerts were a visual feast and sounded great with the band playing at the top of their form. Reviews for the tour have been amazing from both fans and critics alike and this DVD release is guaranteed to appeal to Rush fans everywhere.

Bonus Features:

- Alternative ending for The Real History Of Rush: Episode 2
- Outtakes from History Of Rush: Episodes 2 & 17
- Outtakes from I Still Love You, Man
- Live from Laura Secord Secondary School (full clip from BLTS)
- Live from Passaic, NJ (full clip from BLTS)

RushIsABand adds their insight to the above info:

So the bonus features will consist of outtakes from the intro, intermission and outro videos from the Time Machine Tour along with the full clip of the Canadian Bandstand gig that Rush played at Laura Secord High School in St. Catharines, ON in 1974 with original drummer John Rutsey on drums, portions of which were included in the Rush documentary Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage. It's not clear whether this would just be the same 2 clips of 'Working Man' and 'Best I Can' that were also included as extras in the documentary, or if it will include the entire show (or more unreleased footage at least). The bonus features will also include some of Rush's 1976 black and white bootleg video of their performance in Passaic, NJ. Again, it's not clear what full clip means in this context. The DVD/Blu-ray is also listed as being region free and with a running time of 164 minutes. The cover art is the familiar Time Machine Tour design with the text Live in Cleveland printed over the countdown timer which is set to 2011.

Is this the band's first release with Concord? And if so, is it a one-off or the beginning of a new long-term label affiliation?

The DVD and Blu-ray are Zoe label releases, as have been previous Rush videos. Zoe is distributed by Rounder, and Rounder was bought by Concord last year. From Rush's perspective, they're just continuing to release videos through the same label as before.
