Unfortunately, it sounds like one of those 'deluxe' packages where you have to fork out a substantial amount to get the good stuff: 5.1 mix and unreleased tracks but you're also paying for things you don't want (vinyl etc...) From the Who website: http://www.thewho.com/index.php?module= ... tem_id=491Pete's Blog 1st June, 2011 WHAT I'M DOING EVERYDAY I am shut away in my home studio at the moment working to restore the demos of Quadrophenia. Bob Pridden is doing surround-sound mixes of selected tracks. Jon Astley is remastering the original vinyl mix, and evaluating his own 1996 remix (the one where you can properly hear Roger's astonishing vocals). I am sitting in a pile of notes, desk diaries, photos (I took a lot of my own between 1971-1973 when Quadrophenia emerged), original lyrics and writing liner notes. I am really enjoying this work. Bob's mixes are mind-blowing. My demos are among the best I've ever done, and include some real quirky tracks that didn't make it onto the final album. I still find studio work strange – I have to have the speakers very low in volume, not what I'm used to. This package, due in October if all goes well, is another Live at Leeds and Hull – or even another Lifehouse Chronicles – in the making. You are going to love it. I hope so, because I am missing this summer sunshine to get it completed on time.

One of my favorite albums so I'll be stuck with a deluxe version for the 5.1.

Hopefully it won't be another limited edition box set!

Why all the griping? An expanded/boxed set version of "Quadrophenia" is exactly the sort of thing I'd be willing to shell out some $$$ for (depending, of course, on what the final product turns out to be--believe it or not, as compulsive as I am about collecting discs, I don't throw my cash at every "new" Who product that gets thrown out there). Somewhere I have a a bootleg with a batch of Pete's "Quardophenia" demos, and I'm not sure if any of them have ever popped up officially. My biggest reservation stems from the fact that Pete has announced countless forthcoming projects over the years that have failed to come to much fruition--but a pimped-out version of "Quadrophenia" sounds a heck of a lot more interesting than a blues covers album, or a batch of "Endless Wire" demos. This is a CLASSIC ALBUM, people, and I'm happy to see it possibly getting the same sort of loving attention that, yes, other titles in the Who catalog have already gotten a couple of times over.

If it's in 5.1, and also shows a capitalistic side of Pete's personality, won't he have to change the name of it, too?

I'd prefer 5.1 blu-ray, but quad Quad is fine also.

Quote: Jon Astley is remastering the original vinyl mix, and evaluating his own 1996 remix (the one where you can properly hear Roger's astonishing vocals). I will buy the box set just because of this. I'll pay almost anything for a remastered CD based on the original mix. I felt The Who reissues from the mid-90's were great because of the packaging, but absolutely horrible when it came to the remixing. I love remastering, but remixing is altering history. Some of the Who reissues like Who Are You sounded so different from the original that I stopped buying then. I still own the original MCA CD release of Quadrophenia. I felt buying the remixed CD was too much of a crap shoot.

I wish I would have held onto my Mobile Fidelity copy of Quardrophenia, but I got a pretty penny for it in the late '90s after it went out of print and I needed some cash. I'm really looking forward to this box set. I wish they would have given Who's Next this kind of treatment, rather than just the deluxe version (although, it did sport the original mix).

I personally love the Quad reissue that in my opinion corrected a initial mix problem. Daltry's vocals were too buried in the mix and the remix remedied that. Quad was was always one of my faves and that reissue brought me more love to album than ever.
Now with this reissue, this should be killer. I have demos from this period so I am really looking forward to these as bonus tracks. And with 5.1 mix, well that's the cherry on top. If they do the whole album in 5.1 this could be the reissue of the year!

I popped in my surround Billion Dollar Babies the other day and was marveling at parts I don't remember from the stereo version.
I'm pretty sure it's just the quad mix tweaked for 5.1, but it was pretty cool to my ears.

I'm pretty sure it's the only quad mix tweaked for 5.1, but it was pretty cool to my ears. Oh, I love the surround of that album. I got to pull this out this weekend, it's been to long since I have heard it. Thanks Dr.Chris for the mention. My fave Alice Cooper album. Rick A.

and after he re-does the whole who catalog once, he can re-do it again and again and again...................................................... I look forward to your reaction to the multi-disc reissue of CSN's debut. I'm sure you'll have plenty of ellipses for it as well. With respect, based on your frequent posts on the subject I'm not sure you have a handle on how this works. The Who were signed to MCA right? A few years back MCA was absorbed by Geffen, Geffen is now owned by Universal. Universal is part of Vivendi (annual revenue of $40 billion). These huge intl corporations want to make money. When catalogs are xferd from one label to another the new label wants a return on their investment. This is why Elvis Costello has been reissued over and over. Whatever label got it after Ryko lost it reissued it again, et al. Same thing w/ The Who. That and Endless Wire didn't sell so I'm sure the label wants to push the old shit again. This notion you have of Pete staying up late thinking of ways to fleece the fans so he can buy Faberge eggs is just silly. He may be a greedy bastard but the main reason there is a series of new comps every few years is because of the labels. You can make the same argument for countless 60's acts. Your fixation on Pete T is a bit strange. Dig... Quad has never been reissued with bonus material! Every issue of Quad to date only contains the songs on the LP. Mind = blown

Mind = blown at least most, i stress most, not all 60's acts try to remain relevant and release new stuff from time to time. even CSN (no Y) have released a few solo and collaborations) over the years and they have always been notoriously slow. pete townshend didn't put out anything new for years, literally years, choosing instead to re-issue the who catalog (which is not that extensive to begin with) over and over and over again, always adding just a little something new or different to rope in the diehards who still love him. and, for what its worth, "endless wire" was pure shit. i think what really took the cake fior me was john enwhitsle dying and townshend and daltry going on with the tour less than a frigging week later with pino pallidino on bass. no one will ever convince me that pete townshend isn't a moneygrabbing slug feasting off his fans. counterpoint: i love the who. loved them growing up and still listen to them all the time. bought the 3 CD deluxe "endless wire" hoping for that old magic to return. alas, it was not to be. and yes, if CSN(Y) ever issue that 3 CD deluxe edition of "deja vu" i will be first in line to buy it. p.s. and i wasn't real happy about the child porn accusations either.

Renny, I was very hurt initally when The Who continued the start of the tour after the sudden death of John Enwhitsle but after looking at the complete picture over time I come to understand why Pete and Roger wanted to carry on. First, the commitments tru contracts, the expected pay to road and sound crew and after all their fans who have been awaiting such a tour. Second, and this is hard to say but John did it to himself, he had a bad heart (which he was on Doctor's care) and so what does he do, drinks at the bar (he was taking heart medication), does a few lines with a hooker and gets a BJ from her.Yeah, that will do you in. He's a grown up, he should have known better. As for the child porn accusations, I was initally sadden to hear this not knowing anything other than the headline, but again, this will be discussed I'm sure in detail in his forthcoming bio so let's wait for that. Renny, Pete and Rog are heading to their 70's for God's sake, if they can make some money why not. People don't want it, don't buy it. I, for one, have been buying the deluxe reissues like "Sell Out" (love it) and the recently "Live at Leeds". I am happy he is in control of his own work and providing as much to his fans as he see's fit. And why not, its his work. Yeah, their been times I hear treasured Who songs in TV shows and other commercial settings that personally disturbs me but ChrisM is correct that labels and publishering need their ROI as well. Let not this stuff interfere with our love for the music and in my case the band. Life is to short. Rick A.

You don't like it when he released nothing but archival material in the late 90's/early 00's. But you also hate the new album he did release in 2006. So I guess what you're saying is he should not release anything ever again, old or new...
