I saw this only a couple days ago and it really got me interested. On the surface this looks like it'll be awesome, but on the surface Van Helsing looked awesome and it turned out to be awesomely bad. If the script is smart, this should be a great Gothic Horror Mystery.

Agreed! Considering that this is most of the stars and the director from Batman Begins, I have yet to be disapointed in Chris Nolan. I might actually go out and spend money in a...
...dare I say it...
...movie theater...
...there, I said it...
...movie theater to see it. My wife and I will do the dinner and a movie route.

The book, by the British author Christopher-Priest-who-is-not-the-same-guy-as-comics-writer-Priest, is really truly outstanding.

Sounds good. I might have to dig that up and take a look. It's been forever since I've read anything fun.
Other than Garden Railroad book and magazines.

Just saw this for the second time ever. Going in knowing about Christian Bale's twin helped me enjoy the film a lot more this time around. At the time I first saw it, I rolled my eyes at Christian Bale's secret twin reveal and the idea of Hugh Jackman being able to hide all those bodies. I felt like it all lead up to some hokey, ridiculous ending that ruined the film for me.
While I still feel the idea that someone can successfully hide the fact that they have a twin for so long to be preposterous, going in knowing it was all going to happen that way in the end allowed me to loosen up and just enjoy the film for what it was and this time, I really, really liked it.
Probably my favorite aspect is at the end, you're not really sure which magician to root for throughout the film -- they both seemed tragically monsterous at the end.

I was thoroughly confused the first time through, but I enjoyed it a lot more the second time, too.

This is the film that convinced me Nolan was a genius.

As it was, a great film was hurt by a dodgy ending, and became a bit above average.

For me, the ending was what catapulted it from a great film, to a brilliant film.

I loved it. Brilliant. And along the same lines, the people that don't like it tend to be the ones that get caught up in the idea that it's supposed to be "a twist" with an explanation you don't see coming. But it's tipped off early that he must have a double -- it just unfolds in a way that makes you go "no way!"
The book is more up front about it, so there's no temptation to get hung up on a "a twist."

I've posted my thoughts about the movie several times here over the years: Quote: I saw you post this is the sci-fi thread and started to comment. I'm glad you liked it as I did. I think it was visually beautiful, well-acted, and had a fascinating hook to the story. Everybody's not going to like everything, but some of the few complaints I've heard about the movie make me think some people were looking for something this movie wasn't trying to be -- such as a Sixth Sense style twister or a "plausible" sci-fi with the teleportation. It was just the opposite of both of those things. The whole movie demonstrated to you that (1) you're always disappointed by the real thing behind the trick (2) the real trick is the life the magician lives every day; and (3) if you ever were shown something that was undeniably "magic" you'd either flip out or say "that's crap, not possible to happen that way." "The real world is miserable . . . .solid through and through." viewtopic.php?f=1&t=17446&p=902880
