I've been meaning to do this for some time, but seeing that Eric has started the "Final Four", I thought I would post this. In 1990, some poll (Cahiers du Cinema??) listed Raging Bull as the best film of the 80's, and since Siskel and Ebert emphatically agreed, nobody disputed it except nitpicks who insisted 1980 was the last year of the 70's. I remember no consensus on the best film of the 90's, so maybe we could hash things out. Four immediate films came to mind and strong cases can be made for all of them. I'll give my thoughts later, but for now, what do you think?

Pulp Fiction. On this list the second would be Goodfellas. third Shindler's List, 4th Boogie Nights and 5th Titanic. But i loved them all.

Goodfellas. Pulp Fiction is good. Schindler's List is an important film. Boogie Nights is a cool film. Titanic is .. not. But Goodfellas is the best of the 90s.

In case anybody wants to lynch me for including Titanic, I happened to vote for Pulp Fiction.

Schindlers list is probably the best one of the choices, because it's very well made, disturbing, realistic, and seals the horrors of the Holocaust in your mind forever. My (too long for a poll) list would include Schindlers, Reservoir Dogs, Silence of the Lambs, Fight Club, the Matrix (mostly for sheer influence), Shawshank Redemption, Trainspotting, Jurassic Park, Seven, and maybe True Romance. Yeah, Jurassic doesn't belong, but damn, it's dinosaurs!

Pulp Fiction is to 90's movies what Nirvana's "Nevermind" album was to 90's music.
For good, and for ill.

I doubt I'll ever watch any of them. I know that I'll never watch Goodfellas or Boogie Nights, and it would take a *lot* of persuasion to get me to watch Titanic. As for Pulp Fiction and Schindler's List, maybe someday I'll get around to 'em.

I still maintain it is a great film that fully deserved to win Best Picture. Incidentally, Roger Ebert selected Hoop Dreams as the best film of the 90's. It is a great film, but I honestly think documentaries belong in a separate poll from fiction films. Fargo is also a movie I should have included in this poll though along with The Shawshank Redemption.

Why would you consciously avoid seeing these movies?

Jeff wrote: Oh yeah, Fargo was excellent! I forgot that one. It is an excellent film although I think it (like Hoop Dreams) is WAY overrated by both Siskel and Ebert. (Still, it would have been a more deserving Best Picture winner than The English Patient, which will be chiefly remembered as the first Disney film (under the Miramax label) to win top prize.) I remember Ebert raving about a poster of a polka player hanging in the room of the kid who plays William H. Macy's teenage son. He seemed to miss the point of the scene completely. Who cares about the poster? The last thing this kid remembers is that his mother yelled at him for his bad grades and now she's missing. In a way, he blames himself for what happened. However, we the audience know that his father, who is consoling him in this scene is actually responsible and although he doesn't mean her any harm, is ultimately responsible for her murder. THAT'S what I remember about the scene, not some stupid poster hanging on the wall. Sorry about the rant...

As great as these movies are (including Titanic), I can't blame Kevin if he would rather watch the complete James Bond collection again.

FARGO is just amazing. I don't find it to be overrated in any way.
The Coen brothers hit with me about two-thirds of the time, but when they do, it's knocked right out of the park.

Schindler's List I guess was the best one. But I voted Titanic, as I find Schindler's difficult to rate with other movies. Titanic was a very good movie, before the hype set in.
I didn't care for Boogie Nights, and Pulp Fiction was good and so was Goodfellas.
From the 90s, other top films for me are:
Goodwill Hunting Copland Sixth Sense Jurassic Park Saving Private Ryan Toy Story Aladdin Apollo 13 Braveheart Forrest Gump City Slickers Tombstone JFK Bugsy LA Confidential Unforgiven
