After years and years of sitting on a shelf in a recording studio, the Big Star tribute album entitled Big Star Small World is finally being released this Tuesday. It includes a track by Big Star themselves, "Hot Thing", which was previously available only on an awful cheapo compilation in the early 1990s:

"Hot Thing" (recorded by the reunion lineup of Chilton, Stephens, Stringfellow and Auer) appeared on the "Big Star Story" CD, a sort-of uneven best-of compilation from 2003

It's an okay song, but not essential. Somewhat similar to the material on the In Space album from 2005

You're right. I was mixing that up with the Ignition Records sampler that the track first appeared on in the '90s, which actually ended up being somewhat of a collectible.

I bought this when it was released 6 years ago, because I had heard much about it over the years, and I liked many of the contributing artists.

Although it didn't quite live up to the legend, I still enjoy it, and pull the disc out once or twice a year to listen to it. A few of the covers are somewhat faithful to the originals, but that's not a problem for me when the source material is so good

i have it. All I can remember is i liked it enough to keep it, but not enough to ever play it again.

Is there anything else of note on it, and would it be worth the effort to find one?

But it would be for the collectibility or completist aspect. It's just the original promo sampler from the Big Star Small World tribute album. Then the label became insolvent, and a commercial release of the album was in limbo until 2006.

According to the Amazon listing, the Matthew Sweet track is an alternate mix to the one that was eventually released on Big Star Small World.
