If anyone wants all the released official Atlantic material, here's another comp for you.

http://theseconddisc.com/2011/07/06/whole-hall-and-oates-famed-duos-complete-atlantic-years-collected/#more-7641

Think this is just a UK only release.

This is a solid package if it has good mastering. Anyone have a scouting reports on the quality of releases from Edsel Records?

i know hall & oates released a lot of albums, but they have to be nearing 'doors territory' when it comes to best ofs/greatest hits packages.

This is neither a best of nor a greatest hits. It's a comprehensive collection of their work with Atlantic Records.

If you must, blame the labels not the artists. Or the public who continue to buy repackage after repackage.

oh i agree, back in the beginnings of this place we used laugh about "doors territory" and how many bands were getting near it. now, there has to be 20 or more that i can think of off the top of my head and a few on the verge of getting there.

it's borderline ridiculous.

but as you said, so long as people keep buying them, they will keep making them.

This isn't a greatest hits comp and will be an essential release if the mastering is done properly. Two of the first three albums were discontinued by Atlantic years ago and have only popped up from low budget reissue labels, and none of these albums have ever been remastered. It also includes the three unique songs to the No Goodbyes comp, which has never appeared on CD (the album, not the songs which have never been all available in the same place on CD), along with a CD bonus track to complete the deal. If compared to The Doors, this is more in line with buying the two-fer CD of Other Voices/Full Circle, than yet another hit comp.

good analogy.

i do think "no goodbyes" was available wheresoever in the world for awhile (i've seen occasionally on ebay).

The first review on Amazon says remastered with an excellent 30+ page booklet...

"Abandoned Luncheonette" and, less notably, "War Babies were two of the best albums to come out of the '70s. At the time, thanks to "She's Gone" finally catching fire, AL started to sell by the boatload just as "War Babies" was issued thus overshadowing that left turn masterpiece. In the midst of it all they switched to RCA.

Has anyone here ordered and/or received this? I placed an order a while ago and it's been backordered so long I was just asked to approve an extension on this order.

Dean,

Amazon UK is also showing a delay, but a third party dealer on both sites is claiming to have it in stock right now ...

Amazon UK:

Don't know if you'd want to take a chance on cancelling your order with Amazon proper and then re-ordering from the third party dealer.

I was lucky to find this used on eBay for a very reasonable price. So far it sounds great (a little on the loud side, but not to a fault), and though a chunk of the booklet's liner notes are taken from the box set from three or so years ago, it does have all the song lyrics.

Thanks Linda. I had considered that but decided to just wait and see.

One of my locals is stocking this, but I didn't buy it because the booklet was clearly misinserted into the jewel case and is visibly damaged.

I've also got this on order from Amazon UK, along with the UFO Chrysalis Years box. It has been several weeks at least.

I finally got this title after a series of misadventures with Amazon. First my domestic order was cancelled after a long delay. Then my first UK order arrived in the US disguised as an empty box, only containing a packing slip. The replacement finally arrived this week, along with a couple of the Doobie Brother two-fers, also from Edsel.

The packaging is very nice. Great booklet with full reproductions of all the covers, new liner notes, and lyrics for all tracks. These albums are definitely remastered, but like the Doobie Brother titles, I noticed that Edsel has something against bottom end. While I'm hearing better detail in the songs the remastering is lacking punch. Remastering is subjective so make of that what you will. I do think Whole Oates and Abandon Lunchoenette are slight improvements, but I prefer the Wounded Bird edition of War Games as it has more punch.

One additional note: The fade between "Can't Stop the Music" and "Is It a Star?" is interrupted by silence. It's baffling they would take a fade and insert a second of silence. It reminded me of the early CD burners that would leave a 2-second gap. Where's the quality control?
