Nirvana, the trio comprised of Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, and Dave Grohl, hailed originally from a coastal fishing town in Washington and rose to become one of the most influential rock bands in history with irreverence, intense honesty and an overriding passion. The cultural shift Nirvana’s Nevermind initiated was felt instantly on release -- and the profundity and depth of that shift becomes even more apparent when seen through the prism of the two decades of art and music created in its wake.

Released in September of 1991, Nirvana’s Nevermind garnered near-unanimous praise and rose within a few months to the No. 1 slot on Billboard’s U.S. sales chart. Nevermind was propelled to No. 1 across the globe by their young fans worldwide that identified with the band and embraced their anthem "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and its landmark music video. Since then, it has sold more than 30 million albums.

Nirvana changed the course of popular music forever and remains an inspiration to those who have followed.

Today, Universal Music Enterprises is pleased to announce the 4-CD/1-DVD Super Deluxe Edition of Nirvana’s Nevermind available September 19, 2011, in the U.K. and September 20, 2011, in North America. The CDs will include previously unreleased recordings, rarities, b-sides, BBC radio appearances, alternative mixes, rare live recordings and an unreleased concert in its entirety on DVD.
The 20th anniversary of Nirvana will be marked throughout the year, with various events and releases.

i just never got this band, nor this album. always found pearl jam to be more pleasing to my tastes. and i have tried, believe me, i have tried.

4CD's.......off one album. that's gonna be a lot of filler.

i found "ten" to be fascinating.

it was a slow downward spiral after that as each album got progressively more away form my tastes.

ended up returning most of them and didn't even buy the last 2.

Rightfully or not, this album is credited with hastening the fall of hair metal.

So, I love it.

Grunge lasted about as long as Cobain did and fortunately, hair metal returned.

I love this album. To me, it was a groundbreaker. It's so powerful over all, both in production and execution that made it a very special record. And over the decades it hasn't lost anything in my book.

Very raw but polished at the same time. Loved the songs, great melodies and the quiet/loud/quiet structure (made famous by The Pixies) was refreshing when previous metal rock was at 11 all the time.

I will be getting this on day one and look forward to going back with a very special record for me.

I couldn't stand grunge when it started....Nirvana, Pearl Jam, or anyone else......already set in my 60's/garage/punk ways.

When Patti Smith covered Smells Like Teen Spirit, I liked her version and took interest. I decided to try Nevermind....and from a 16 year distance from grunge, I liked the songs.

It's a very good album.....though maybe not enough for me to buy a 4 CD/DVD set. I still don't care for Pearl Jam or most of the rest.

To me, Nirvana and Aerosmith are two bands that essentially recorded pop songs with pop hooks. Aerosmith would eventually become a pop band after many years of being considered a "hard rock" band; Nirvana managed to retain the "indie/alternative" label because Cobain's suicide halted whatever evolution the band was on track to undergo.

The whole notion of "indie cred" was a huge thing back in the early 90's music scene, but is difficult to explain today, especially as these so-called "alternative" bands are now issuing pimped-out deluxe editions of some of the era's seminal albums--"Ten" last year, and now "Nevermind" and possibly "Gish" this year. I'm sure Cobain would cringe at such exploitation.

I hate Nirvana and I just don't get it. Never did. Passed up seeing them on this tour in Philly right when the album came out (I think it was the same week) for $5 at a club we used to play in. Our bass player loved them and asked me to go. I heard the album and said no. Gotta say-I regret that because I could've said I saw them and for $5 in front of probably 200 people if that. But I didn't and I admit it. I probably would've disliked the show, but who knew it was history? Not me.
But Cobain was a good writer and Dave Grohl, well, he just fucking rules.

I liked Nevermind at the time (& in a top 40 band Teen Spirit & Come As You R were a blast to play), but 5 discs such total overkill. I'm out.

Come as you are Geff, they are a Seattle group ! I'm in. :yay:

After complaining about the lack of anything interesting to buy there all of a sudden is a 'plethora' of bloody box sets and collectors editions being released this year.

My poor wallet

Amazon is also listing a single disc remaster, and a 2CD deluxe edition (which will be the one for me) on 9/20.

I'm surprised KISS hasn't announced one of these things. But then again, they've always been slow to open their vaults and cash in on this kind of thing. Go figger.

This was a fake ad that was circulating on April Fools Day five years ago about a three disc Destroyer set that was really well done. I would have bought it!!

2CD is probably what I'll go for as well.

Depending on what's on it, I may consider a 2 cd. At one time I hadthe MFSL, but that's one of several MFSL cd's I woned that were crachedby the horrible MFSL jewelcases.

I didn't get Nirvana at the time, but I've really come to like their music over the past few years, particularly Nevermind. I'll pick this up.

Pearl Jam is another story for me. I really want to like them because I think Eddie Vedder has a really cool voice. But the songs are just so damned boring.

I'm just the opposite. Cobain is just so overrated. If he hadn't died at 27, he would be just another fallen grunge star playing clubs. But he falls into that Rolling Stone "I died of drugs and that makes me cool" category.
