Yes Guitarist Trevor Rabin Working on First Solo Album in 22 YearsYes Guitarist Trevor Rabin Working on First Solo Album in 22 Years by Phil Gallo, L.A. | May 03, 2011 5:17 EDT
Film composer and former Yes guitarist Trevor Rabin is mixing his first solo album since 1989, a collection of instrumentals that Voiceprint Records will release in September.
Rabin, whose credits include "Race to Witch Mountain," "Armageddon" and the NCAA basketball tournament theme, recorded all the instruments himself except for the drums. For percussion he brought in Vinnie Colaiuta, Louis Molino and his son Ryan Rabin of the band Grouplove.
"It's time to let this baby go," he says. "In every project I have done, there has been (a deadline and a goal). With (my first band) Rabbit, it was a single and then albums; with Yes you had to make a strong, viable album, and with film you've got a schedule to keep. Here, I was able to do what I wanted. It's not necessarily easy on the ears."
The composer of "Owner of a Lonely Heart" went with the independent Voiceprint label after they impressed him with the job they did on the Yes demo recordings, released as "90214" and "Live in L.A." On May 2, Voiceprint's Gonzo imprint released "Union Live," a 1991 concert recording by Yes.
The new album is Rabin's first of instrumentals. His last solo album, 1989's "Can't Look Away," was created in a similar fashion with Rabin playing guitar, bass and keyboards and guests, Molino among them, on drums.
"I felt such freedom doing this," Rabin says, his May schedule intentionally clear of movie scoring -- the first time in 15 years -- so he can return home to South Africa to see his mother. "I wasn't restricted in any way. It worked out like a painting. You leave it on the easel and return to it when you're ready."

Yup, seeing that video on MTV and then reading an interview he did with one of the guitar magazines sparked my interest. I especially liked his attitude about being pigeonholed with the "Owner of a Lonely Heart" guitar sound.

I saw him live at The Bottom Line (man, I miss that venue) on the Can't Look Away tour. Phenomenal performance, and to see him in such a small place was a once in a lifetime experience. I'm looking forward to this new album, and hopefully we won't have to wait another 22 years until the next one.

It is a Jazz/fusion album, all instrumentals, from what I understand. As much as I like Rabin's work when he does rock, I have zero interest in this one.

Picked this up, great production and playing BUT why won't he make a proper rock album again. He single handedly saved YES during the 80's. Enough of the soundtracks Trevor, let's rock again!

I've only listened to it once so I don't know the songs very well yet, but this is NOT another soundtrack album. It's a collection of instrumentals in various styles, with Rabin's distinctive guitar playing. Sure, I miss hearing his vocals, but there's a lot to like here. In some ways it's similar to a lot of Steve Howe's solo albums, ironically enough, so if you like those you would probably like Rabin's album. I do hope that he eventually releases another "rock" album with vocals, as "Can't Look Away" is one of my favorites. I saw him on that tour at The Bottom Line in NY and it was a phenomenal show.

The thing I remember about that tour was that he played in Philly at the TLA and I had tickets for both nights, dead center, in like the 3rd or 4th row.
The TLA was a small theater back then (had movie theater seats in it which have since been ripped out so it is a standing place now). Fit maybe like 300-600 people??
But Rabin brought enough amplifiers to power the old Spectrum (an arena seating 17,007) like he was still in Yes. Stacks were piled up to the ceiling. I never saw anything like that in the TLA. I had already gone to a few other concerts that same week, and after that first Rabin show (think it was a Friday night), my ears were ringing so bad I couldn't take another show the next night.

Obviously it isn't a soundtrack album. Still, it's another instrumental thing and not what I would look forward to hearing from him at this point.

I saw Trevor in 1989 at a small bar in downtown Cleveland. Great show. I remember his polka dot suit (like the one in the video posted above). I also recall Lou Molino (drummer) kicked my ass. He was beyond impressive. I saw Simon Phillips play the same small bar a year later, and Lou was every bit as brilliant. The dance he did during the drum solo of Sludge showed there was a sense of humor behind the drumset.
I was lucky enough to hear the soundcheck that evening. There was a LOT of sound equipment for such a small gig. Trevor was very hands-on getting the sound right. The mix was as good as I'll ever hear for a live show. It was a flawless show all around.

I didn't make it to see him on that tour, but heard he had non-stop sound and programming problems at the show in Kansas City. People who I knew who went said that it was start and stop all night.

I've listened to this a couple of times and I really like it. He covers a lot of musical ground, and even though it would've been nice to have at least a handful of vocal tracks, you always know you're listening to Trevor Rabin. It's certainly not a life-changing album, but I imagine any fans of his previous work would enjoy it (as long as you're not put off by an all-instrumental record).

But is it ROCK instrumentals? The reviews I've read indicate it is jazz/fusion which I'm not into. I dig rock instrumental guitarwork (Satch, Andy Timmons, for example). I don't like jazz/fusion though.

There are some rock instrumentals as well as jazz fusion and other sounds. If you're looking for a whole album of rock instrumentals, then you will probably be disappointed.
