New two-CD editions. Each set contains the original album augmented by non-LP singles, BBC material, demos, alternate mixes and much more.

Linda adds: here's the current selection of Kinks Deluxe Editions, including the previously available Village Green 3CD set ...

In for all of these. I'm also interested to see if this 2-CD series (assuming it continues through the rest of The Kinks' Pye catalogue) will include all of the 1960s material from the Picture Book box set and the BBC collection.

Whatever happened to the deluxe reissues of Something Else, Arthur, and Lola? Did those ever come out?

I can't tell if they came out or not. Amazon UK had a listing for Something Else that said "Sign up to be notified when this item becomes available."

I would think that these 3 likely mean that all the early stuff is going to get this treatment. I'm not sure how they can improve on the 3 disc Village Green Preservsation Society unless they finally add Pictures In The Sand.

I'm keeping the box set, BBC sessions, and everything else.

Over the years I've purchased the box set, the BBC sessions, and various other album reissues that include bonus tracks. Is there anything in this new series that hasn't already appeared in one of these places?

One of the most influential and beloved of all the English groups of the 1960s were The Kinks, whose clever and oh-so-British lyrics and eclectic musical styles produced some of the greatest singles of the era. Now the band are set to re-release several of their landmark ’60s and early ’70s albums with a slew of unreleased goodies for fans.

Set for release on March 28 are the first three Kinks albums: Kinks (1964), Kinda Kinks (1965) and The Kink Kontroversy (1965). Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire) (1969) and Muswell Hillbillies (1971) are set to follow in May, with Face to Face (1966) and Something Else by The Kinks (1967) scheduled for July.

All of the re-releases will reportedly feature rarities, outtakes, session tracks and expanded liner notes.

OK there might be some duplication but hey it's the Kinks!

The best non-Zappa, non-Beatles band ever.

This year is looking promising - Kinks - McCartney, Smiles and Beefheart's Bat Chain Puller, Derek, John Barleycorn - lots of great vault stuff (plus whatever the ZFT pushes out).

I don't think many people will be too surprised by this, but the release date on Amazon UK has just been bumped from 2011-02-28 to 2011-03-28. Personally, I'd be surprised if even this date holds.

Interesting that they're skipping Lola vs. the Powerman and including Muswell Hillbillies.....since Muswell was the major switch in record labels. I guess the box set shows that everything is now owned by the same company.

Charles, I changed the release dates in your posts upthread. The first round of UK releases are now scheduled for March 28th, but Amazon USA currently has the wrong date listed for when they'll be in stock as imports.

Was the first one the only one to have stereo and mono mixes?

Charles wrote:

Indeed. I wonder if this was due to a lack of material or a lack of interest. "Lola" was one of their biggest hit, so maybe the former?

Even if Universal continues the series through 1970, the 1967-1970 titles would be import only, since Reprise continues to insist that they have a perpetual U.S.A. license on the 1967-1970 material.

These are all "import only" anyway.

BTW, they sound fantastic. Better than the box, better than the previous remasters. I'm very, very happy with the first three.

But hold onto the previous, 1-CD expanded edition of "The Kink Kontroversy" for its' exclusive stereo version(albeit with no background vocals) of "Dedicated Follower of Fashion".

I agree that the 3 new expanded 2-CD Kinks sets are excellent. I would expect nothing less from Andrew Sandoval... the same guy behind Rhino Records' highly respected 2-CD & 3-CD Monkees reissues. When Rhino's corporate bosses at Warner Music let Sandoval go as a full-time employee(though they sometimes still use his services as an independant compiler), it was obvious that this guy was going to land on his feet elsewhere in the industry.

Oh, I just want the mono mixes. :) But that is a great catch for stereophiles:

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00005NHNZ/?tag=imwan-20

Phil, any idea if they're going to redo the Village Green album as part of this series? It would be sort of strange for them to make a new Deluxe Edition that has one disc less than the 3-CD set which came out a few years ago, but I'm hoping for a reworked version that includes ALL the Four More Respected Gentlemen tracks. (Don't want to end up having to keep the entire Picture Book box set just for a good remaster of "She's Got Everything" ... sigh.)

Short of flooding this thread with waveforms, one thing that really stands out to me is the lack of distortion. There's a certain "scratchiness" around the edges of many previous Kinks remasters which has been noticeably reduced in these new Deluxe Editions. In fact, the only place where I still noticed obvious distortion was Dave's opening wail on "Got My Feet On The Ground".

I remember years ago, after the corrected 2001 single disc remasters were released, some big shot at the Castle label made a statement to the effect that "this is probably as good as The Kinks' Pye recordings will ever sound". He was wrong, I'm happy to say. :)
