Kenneth Branagh's "Henry V" was certainly a fantastic movie. It made me finally realize that Shakespeare really does deserve his reputation. Reading his plays in class just doesn't cut it. You've got to see a good performance or adaptation to make them come alive.

No Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead? Yeah, it's Hamlet from their point of view, but it's definitely worth the time to watch.

I assume #6 is Ian McKellen's Richard III, which was from 1995, not 1993 (unless it was released 2 years earlier in the UK or something). Great movie.

Wasn't Keanu Reeves in some version of A Midsummer's Night's Dream?

And I see Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing ranked #11. It's a right jolly romp. Branagh and Emma Thompson (who were married at the time) have great chemistry, and Michael Keaton gives a grandly hammy performance.

It seemed to only be movies that follow the story of a Shakespeare play pretty closely. R&G lifts scenes from Hamlet, but the story follows a totally different set of beats.

Keanu Reeves, Frank. In tights. On the big movie screen at the theater. Thanks.

Al Pacino's performance in the 2004 Merchant of venice was terrific, and the fil deserving of a much higher place, as is Baz Luhrmann's kinetic Romeo + Juliet (even if Leonardo and Claire Danes did seem a bit unsure what their lines actually meant) Interesting list, though.

When I first met my ex-wife, she managed a video store and I happened to rent that very film from her.
Thirteen years later, BAM! Face tattoo.
Make of that what you will.

(The movie's awesome, by the way. Based on the Tom Stoppard play during his whole "are-we-all-just-characters-in-someone-else's-play" phase around the same time as The Real Inspector Hound.)

Throne of Blood is by far my favorite of them.
