So I just cooked up a big mess of fried okra. I think I can count on one hand the number of times in my life I've fried anything, but hey - I'm Southern and sometimes a Southern girl just wants some fried okra. That stuff is GOOD.

You can keep the pickled pig's feet, though.

What are the "regional" foods you all like? What don't you like?

Pickled pig's feet is O.K.. Doesn't make me gag or anything but not my favorite. My dad ate that and souse meat. (I don't think he can have it any more because of the dietary restrictions he's on.) Okra is awesome period. I even like it steamed or boiled. Slime me.

I'll try just about anything, but the thing I eat most regularly that most of you would never eat more than one taste of is natto. Soybeans that smell like gym socks. But they're good.

Agreed. I also like okra pickles. Yum.

Never heard of or eaten natto, though, as far as I know.

First and foremost, Skyline Chili. Definitely takes some getting used to for visitors to the area, because it's not like "normal" chili. But good lord is it good.

Then, Goetta...sort of this oatmeal/pork combination thing that you fry in a skillet or make into sausages.

In the northern part of Ohio, we call that Cincinnati chili regardless of whether it's Skyline or someone else that makes it. Strange dish, but not bad.

I visited one of my best friends and his wife in Cincinnati last year and they had me try both items. The goetta was weird, but really good. I had tried the chili before and hated it, but I gave it another shot and it was ok this time.

Yeah, there's loads of others, all generically called Cincinnati chili around here too. Skyline is just the biggest and best. And they give you the most cheese, which is always a good thing.

Are you from the Crescent City, Jim? Many of my favorite foods come from there. :)

Here in the Pacific Northwest, I'm going to profess my love for steamed Dungeness crab.

There's a restaurant here called the Crab Pot, where they steam the crab, corn, and potatoes all together, put them in a big salad bowl, then dump it all in front of you on the paper-covered table. They leave the bowl to chuck the shells into. Very messy, and very fun.

Ad me to the Kimchi eater's list! I LOVE it!

Also, I've had Natto a few times, mostly in sushi, and it is very good despite the odor.
Tho I am originally from the south, I never developed a taste for some of the more........colorful cuisine. So no Hog Jowls, Chitlins, Brains and Eggs, etc for me.

In order
  1. Had 'em. Eh.
  2. Good, but they'll never be made in my home, as you literally have to boil the shit out of 'em (and it smells like it)
  3. Another eh.
I believe the difference between Southern Food and Soul Food is the Mason Dixon line.

Okra, yum!

I guess the oddest local food we have in Philly is scrapple. Standard diner fare. Crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside, and it tastes best with syrup.

They have scrapple in the frozen meat case at the grocery store across the street from me. Do you just slice it and fry it?
